  • Dead Logic Board?!

The green (or orange) light on the magsafe is controlled by a simple little power management unit that is separate from the logic board... no reason why it won't work properly even if the Logic Board is , indeed, toast.

Seems like too much of a coincidence to NOT suspect that the battery change is the cause of the problem.  Bad voltage to the board could indeed "fry" certain components that would render the board useless.  Since those batteries have the built-in charge indicators, they MAY have other "parts" built into the battery such as voltage regulation.  In that case, it's certainly possible that a bad battery unit could output slightly more voltage than the computer components could handle.  (No way of knowing if that's the case from here, but it's certainly possible.)

Either way, I think you'd have a hard time getting any sort of settlement out of the battery manufacturer, as proving it's fault (to THIER satisfaction) would be difficult at best.  It might just be time to accept a bit of bad luck and upgrade to a newer (or used) model... The HDD should be salvageable for data transfer.

  • Report insists Apple 'keeping options open' on phasing out iTunes downloads

...  are my CDs higher or lower quality than what Apple now offer as downloadable?  That would have been a lot simpler!  :)

The CD is much better quality than a download.  How you rip that CD to your computer will determine whether your rip is superior to iTunes downloads.  Obviously, a lossless codec would be better, but you end up with a 3 minute song that takes up 50MB of space.  Ripping at 256-320 kbps will give you a file that is on par with iTunes purchases.

Personally, my ears are shot to the point where I probably can't hear any better than a 128kbps rip anyway... too many years spent perched atop jet engines.

  • How many people jailbreak and use Cydia?

I don't jailbreak my devices... but I 100% support the ability for others to do so.

Apple has every right to make their iOS difficult to open, but that shouldn't mean that people don't have the right to try to crack it. (and publicly disseminate that information when they succeed.)
