  • Apple Vision Pro can be used in public, but mind your manners

No matter how usable VP is in public space, since it is able to record the screen - thus to record me, but not giving a clue about it (you saw the video? the old guy seemed uncomfortable next to him, naturaly), I will be asking VP wearers to put the headset off the head. If they won’t comply and would continue pointing their head in inappropriate wide angle towards me (which is almost 180deg) I’ll put VP off their head myself.

I don’t see public use of Vision Pro acceptable.
The Vision Pro flashes white when recording. So there is a visual queue that you are being recorded. That said isn’t intuitive and suitable should be something like red since that is already what people already associate with a camera recording.

As for people recording in public goes, it is perfectly legal and you don’t need to get consent. Further, removing a Vision Pro from someone would be considered assault. So, y you might want to reconsider your plan unless you want a criminal record.
Don’t worry, no bail laws will make sure he spends no time in jail. It’s ok to assault cops now, or haven’t you heard?
You can't possibly believe that. 🤦‍♂️

This tear down was incredible.  There’s so many layers of tech inside the VP, it’s no wonder this thing is $3500 and up.
I don’t think it would have been possible without the M-series processor unless it was all crammed into a Fanny pack.

And many have ordered it with 512GB and 1TB of storage, boosting Apple’s margins even more.  And the case is $200.   And a spare battery.  Etc.   and I would not be surprised if Apple doesn’t tell us how many they sell at the next results call.
Yeah, none of this is possible without Apple designing their own chips. I remember when many on this forum thought Apple was foolish to purchase PA Semi (and other companies).

I don’t think a fanny pack or any other discrete solution for processing is feasible if they want a 12ms response time. I’d love to see that halved in the next few years. Maybe by then they’ll be able to make it a fanless device, too.

Time to cue the right-to-repair brigade…

Personally I think the tethered battery controversy is a but overblown as it removes weight from the headset though I find it hard to believe it isn’t swappable on the fly…do any actual owners have confirmation of this?
It is hot swappable only if you are the Flash.
Or just plug in a USB cable to some power source and you'll be charging your battery. For me that's not an issue.

  • Phil Schiller warns third-party app stores are a risk to iPhone users

It’s important to recognize that Apple and Steve Jobs in particular intended the iPhone to be a closed system. He only reluctantly agreed to open up the iPhone and iOS to third party applications after a lot of internal debate and with a series of conditions put in place.
The App Store and 3rd-party app were always intended. That's why the UI was designed the way it was with multiple pages and room for additional apps on the home screen. The reason why it didn't launch with the App Store is because it took time to build right. Remember that Jobs announced it in October 2007, a little over 3 months after the Phone went on sale and during their Fall event right before the Christmas season. This wasn't some hobbled together solution where they never considered the need for 3rd-party apps.

I'm glad I no longer choose to repair devices. That era is long gone for me and most others.

I do find the fans interesting. Surely the amount of heat the M2 and R1 generation is high enough to warrant it, especially next to your face. I wonder how much weight that ads and what versions of the chips could allow for high enough performance without needing to include fans. Maybe this was done in favor of including heavier heatsinks.
