  • Apple sued over 2022 dropping of CSAM detection features

If it's encrypted end to end, how is it possible to detect CSAM?

It's scanned on-device before it's sent, or upon reception. Which is also a problem - your device suddenly has unremovable spyware installed, this is not ok. What happens when Putin adds into the signature database a picture of one of his adversaries - or someone who has wronged him? All of a sudden this is flagged up under the guise of someone having CSAM, and that person is smeared and will probably disappear. No amount of "checks" will stop a dictator in his own country from doing something like that. Who controls the signature database? A guarantee that someone hasn't added a false signature in is essentially impossible.
Slippery slope arguments can be made about anything. And totalitarian countries don't need "evidence" if they want to throw someone in prison or out of a window. That's the whole point of totalitarianism: no checks or balances.
No they don't, but they also might not know who is passing info about the dictator. Be that Putin, Assad, Kim Jong-Un, Jingping etc. With this, they simply add to the database a picture of for example Putin's face, or even the word "Putin", or "dictator", "Winnie the Pooh" or anything else a dictator may deem unsavoury, and bam, they have instant knowledge of anyone who might be sending something not wholly supportive of the "motherland". See how it's a problem? And see how rapidly a thing like this can turn into a privacy snatching mass surveillance tool?

  • Apple Intelligence second wave arrives today -- what you need to know

For people who live in countries within North America but are not the USA, the features introduced in iOS 18.1 in the US will be available to us in iOS 18.2. Not just the Apple Intelligence stuff, but features like the AirPods Pro hearing aid feature. Or having Apple Intelligence spell words correctly* in Canada.

(Canadians use a mix of US and UK spellings for certain words. Bring that up at your next trivia night, Americans!)

Likewise, it seems like features in iOS 18.2 (et al) in the US will show up in the rest of NA with 18.3, which is not expected until very early 2025.

For people in other countries, you should probably assume you'll get iOS 18.1 features in iOS 18.3 or later, et al.
Thanks @chasm  ;. AI is forgetting the existence of other countries more and more as of late. Apple claimed AI would be released to some other countries in December but no sign of anything yet.

Apple's website claims "Supported languagesApple Intelligence is available in English (US) in most regions around the world" But this is false. Setting the language to US on my non-US iPhone doesn't enable AI. Only if I set the region too.

"In December, Apple Intelligence will add support for English (Australia), English (Canada), English (Ireland), English (New Zealand), English (South Africa) and English (UK)."

  • Apple Watch tracks more health metrics than you realize

“ If you purchased on your Apple Watch prior to the cutoff in late 2023, the blood oxygen was fully functional and it included the blood oxygen app. The ones sold after, Apple cut this off via software.”

You forgot to specify that this feature is disabled in the US only. In Canada and everywhere else, Massimo’s patents don’t apply and we have access to this feature.
AI seems to have forgotten as of late that countries exist outside the US. Otherwise a nice article.

  • New Mac mini has a slotted & removable SSD -- but don't expect upgrades

It's almost certainly PCIE on a non-standard connector, like every Mac that has actually had a slotted SSD since about 2012. However, there may be a controller on the "blade" that has special Apple firmware.
