  • UK tries to claim it hasn't backed down on encryption at all

Now being constructive, can someone please remind me why Apple's original proposal was so bad: Before encryption, and totally on-device, scan photos that are leaving the device to go to Apple's servers (iCloud) to ensure they are not CSAM. For me, opposing this because such a scheme could be extended to scan for other types of material is nonsense. Of course it could be extended but this is just extrapolation to the point of absurdity. Apple could do many things (let's start a rumour that they are injecting subliminal messages in photos shall we?) but that doesn't mean it would. Apple could even do it without telling us but their track-record says they wouldn't.
The argument was it is easy for a government (think China) to force Apple to secretly add extra keys to the CSAM scanning database - such as photos of people a government didn't like - with very few people needing to be in-the-know for that to happen. It is a *lot* harder to secretly implement an entire scanning routine without anyone finding out.

  • Undercharged: iPhone 14 owners complain about lower battery endurance

14 Pro already down to 89%. Bought right at launch a year ago. Never saw this drastic decline with any of my previous phones (I get a new one every year).

I am also at 89%. I have to say Apple must have changed their battery supplier. My MBP 14 M1 is also 89% battery health with 261 cycles.
I am very disappointed by obvious decline in battery quality for the last couple of years.
Er, hang on. 89% for 261 of 500 cycles sounds spot on schedule. Just done the maths: 89.65% is on target to hit 80% after 500 cycles.
It's supposed to be 1000 cycles for Macbooks.

  • Rumor: iPhone 15 USB-C cable limited to USB 2.0 speeds, has no MFi

The USB-C transfer rate, I believe, was not a part of the EU dogma. The new phone potentially has a USB-C socket and that is all that was required.

No, the USB-C standard require at least 15W for recharging but not data speed which can variable since some devices don't need much data.
That is not true. Use of the connector does not require 15w at all. A fully compliant USB-C socket can provide 500mA @5v (2.5w) or less and does not need to support data at all, whether that be USB 2.0, 3.2 or Thunderbolt. The USB C cables however should all be able to carry 3A, but I doubt many of the eBay/Amazon specials do. Anything claiming to be USB 3.1 compliant however, generally should be able to source at least 900mA @ 5v however.

  • Netflix won't be making a native Apple Vision Pro app

    'no current plans'

Seems perfectly understandable - Netflix has 200 million subscribers across the world. Vision Pro is initially going to cater to only a TINY fraction of that addressable market - US only, relatively expensive and with production restrains, making it a 500,000 unit (at best) in first-year product if the Sony rumour issues are true.

From Netflix's perspective, they have enough apps to contend with on TVs, computers and phones to maintain. Why waste engineering resources on pleasing a tiny few if it doesn't bring in additional revenue?

I suspect Netflix will, when Vision is addressing a bigger market developed a headset tier which will cost more.
That and Apple is not making any friends with their 30% commission on things like Netflix subs. Some devs like Netflix used to be honoured to work with Apple, now it's more out of necessity than desire unfortunately.

  • M3 Mac mini, 14-inch &16-inch MacBook Pro aren't coming in the fall

I don’t see the point of continuing the 13” MacBook Pro. The M series Apple Silicon chips makes the MacBook Air quite formidable. If you need more power, move up to the 14” or 16” MacBook Pro. Creatives tend to want larger screens. I just can’t imagine a use case where a 13” would be preferred over a 14” for pro users. Not to say that there isn’t a use case. I just don’t see it.
It is significantly cheaper than the 14" model. £800 in fact. I'm surprised it got the M2, I thought it would get neglected as the cheap model like the 21" Intel iMac was; which still had an HDD right up until it was replaced with the M1 iMac.

The 14" MBP is overpriced. It should be around the £1800-£1900 mark IMO, especially since the 15" MBA is only £1399 and the 13" MBP £1349. In fact £1860 is the price of the US 14" MBP, including the UK's 20% sales tax. For some reason though Apple feels the need to charge UK customers £2149 which is the equivalent of $2760. It's way overpriced.
