  • Apple quietly launches new app to help firms improve Apple Maps

I was in my front yard when the Apple mapping car drove by.   That was about 5 years ago and they still haven’t posted Look Around in my city.   Google’s Street View shows my house as it was in 2011, so 14 years and counting

  • Apple's lowest-selling iPhones still crush rival premium flagships

Well then, if they ONLY sell as well as most other companies offerings, it sounds like it's time to refresh the Mini in the near future.
It won't put Apple out of business, and my 12 mini is getting a little long in the tooth (what ever that means).

I bought a refurbished 13 mini the day after the 16 E-waste was announced.  I wanted to replace my 2nd gen SE, and thought they would have a 4th generation SE.

The phrase “long in the tooth” is believed to originate from horses, or more specifically, a horse’s teeth. How so? Because the older a horse gets, the longer their teeth become. So it is possible to give an approximation for how old a horse is simply by looking at their teeth.

  • There's not a big rush to buy the iPhone 16e yet

    Oh, please!
Why would anyone expect this model to sell out or be in short supply on opening day?!

It was released outside of the usual September hype and its media coverage.
It is not targeted to power users or enthusiasts who will want to upgrade and order on day 1.
I would bet the vast majority of customers for this model don't yet know about it or will never know about it until they need/want to buy a new phone for whatever reason. The typical SE customer is not eagerly awaiting the release date of a new phone.
I was “eagerly waiting” for a new SE to replace a pair of 2nd generation SEs (2020).  I was ready to make a day one purchase.   Sadly, the 16e isn’t it.   So I bought a pair of refurbished iPhone 13 minis on Amazon instead for less than the rumored price of a 4th generation SE.   Too bad for Apple.   Good for me.   I hope their internal data shows millions of others doing the same.   FYI, it was quite interesting to see the availability of refurbished iPhone 13 mini fluctuate throughout yesterday at Amazon.   There would be just 2 in stock for a few minutes then suddenly more available.   I’m guessing  refurbished late model iPhones are going to be in demand for awhile.  Not everyone wants Apple Intelligence or a hobbled $599 phone.  Mine were $279/each with 256GB storage.  So there!

  • Why you should use a VPN with public Wi-Fi hotspots

Why not use Apple’s built-in VPN, iCloud Private Relay? Same protection aside from from the location spoofing that a VPN will allow. https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/data/en/icloud-relay/
That doesn’t do what you think it does.  Furthermore it doesn’t do anything for apps, such as banking.   I fear that you don’t understand what iCloud private relay actually does, and by extension many other users are getting a false sense of security by using that feature

  • New iPhone SE 4 dummy models hint at design & color updates

At least here in the U.S., Apple hasn't raised iPhone prices in a very long time. In fact, when inflation is taken into account, prices have actually dropped significantly over time. Even the $100 jump in the base price of an iPhone Max was accompanied by an increase in base storage that made it the same price as the prior model with the same storage. So, not really a price increase on an apples to apples basis. For this reason, I find it hard to believe that Apple is going to slap a 17% percent price increase on its most price-sensitive model, the SE. The SE buyer isn't interested in and doesn't need bells and whistles--they want a great, basic phone at a great price. They get that with the SE at $429. It's a fantastic and relatively inexpensive (for Apple) gateway drug into the Apple ecosystem. Sure, bigger screen, Face ID, 48MP sensor, blah, blah, blah are all "nice to haves" but not "must haves" for the SE buyer if they necessitate a 17% higher price. I think the price will either stay the same or maybe jump to $449, but I'll be shocked if base price goes to $499. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
That’s a bit condescending.   I’m an SE buyer, currently using the $399 2nd Generation.  I’m looking forward to the 4th generation.  I don’t care about price.  I care about value.   $400 for four years is a good value, $500 for the next four years is fine too.   My Apple Watch SE (first generation) does what I need.  Just replaced my iPad mini 5 with iPad mini 7.   Sure, I can easily afford the new fancy stuff but don’t have any compelling reason to.  Did I mention I got 9 good years out of the most powerful 2013 MBP available at the time before upgrading to a current MacBook Air (M3).  I’ll likely get 7 or more years out of it.   Also, I’ve never paid interest on a credit card or car loan in my entire life which made it extremely simple to retire from work at age 54.  Instead of paying top dollar for high end products Ive invested my leftover savings into maxing out my retirement accounts.  (Not to mention that my tiny purchase of AAPL in the early 2000s is now worth 6 figures). So, please don’t tell me what an iPhone SE consumer is looking for.  You apparently have no idea.
