  • ARM iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro coming at end of 2020, says Ming-Chi Kuo

    Moving to AMD Zen 3 and beyond would be a seamless and zero cost direction! While increasing profits, lowering prices and increasing performance. Moving to ARM is a 5 year head ache where in fact ARM will never match nor surpass AMD.
    Remember AMD's Athlon? That brief dominance didn't last. Zen looks more robust, but will it last 10+ years? Apple could be in same situation if Zen stagnates.

    If Apple design their own CPUs, they have no one but themselves to blame if the CPUs aren't competitive. Not to mention the control Apple will have (Rayz2016 mentioned this above). The risk/reward is in Apple's favor, IMO.

    Not to mention Apple also has all the other Apple devices in co-development, so probably a far larger base of hardware using the technology that any other even PCs these days.  That shared R&D will be just mind boggling for the cross-device benefits.

    MicroSoft = Malware
    Not these days IMHO.  I would have agreed until Windows 10.   I have five PCs now as well as seven macs and all the PCs run Windows 10 pro with no third party anti whatever crap, MS's built in defenses have proven able to keep all my hardware safe thus far.  99% of the issues with Windows was always crapware and the likes of anti-virus apps as they were malware themselves.  That said, no PC is used for mail or web access.  Just applications or Mysql.

  • Apple researching HomePod-like audio for future MacBook Pro

    Talking of HomePods ... Siri still can't access my iTunes Match from any HomePods we have, instead always attempting to open Apple Music which I don't subscribe to.  All other devices including Car Play and Apple TV 4K using the remote's mic have no such problem.  Everything is up to date.  Has anyone else seen this problem?

  • Editorial: The new Mac Pro is overkill for nearly everybody, and it hit Apple's own target...

    I don't think that that Mac Pro is overpriced.  Compared to a similar HP, Dell or Lenovo workstation, it's a little bit higher (considering that the Mac Por only have 1-year warranty vs 3-3-3 in Dell, HP and Lenovo).  What Apple is missing is a low cost Mac Pro.  You can buy a HP Z4 starting at $900 and add the options that match your needs and budget.  Compare that to a Mac Pro that starts a $6000.  You may think that a Mac Mini or iMac Pro as options, but there are users that benefit, or may even need the internal expansion the Mac Pro offers.
    I wish they made a half size (mini tower) version of this machine, but all in all it they went for the right type of computer with this.
    I had felt a mid tower for Prosumers was a gap in the range till I got myself my first ever iMac.  I suspect I would have gone the mid range tower route had it existed but I cannot deny the power, simplicity and honestly ... the amazingly low price of the  27" iMac i9 when you consider the screen that's included.  I have a 24 TB 8 bay RAID 0 hanging off the TB3 (plus a second one as a mirror) plus a second 4K Dell monitor,  and boy it's a nice set up.
