  • Microsoft brings formerly Windows-centric Defender antivirus to macOS

Since Satya Nadella came and Balmer 'went' I have increasingly become less anti-Microsoft.  I enjoy using Windows 10, initially in Boot Camp and now I have three PCs on my Network along with five Macs.  I may be 'at home' but this certainly sounds something I will look at because I still fear the weakest link is Windows and it is on my LAN so it may be worth adding an extra layer.  Windows Defender on my PCs in Windows 10 Pro is non-intrusive and seamless, it's not your old Windows.  Don't get me wrong, if I don't need it I won't use it, I am just willing to investigate without prejudice, something I would not have said a few years ago.

  • Humanity is killing itself with fat, and we're going to show you how the Apple Watch can s...

Your Apple Watch is not going to save you, nor is some fad diet or magic exercise program. I say that as someone on my third Apple Watch.

Controlling your weight, excepting unusual medical circumstances, is all about the math. Some is calories and some has to do with where those calories come from. If you consume more calories than your body needs to maintain itself, your body will attempt to store that. Even if you consume the "proper" amount of caloric intake, if it is not balanced you are not going to be healthy. You do not have to be a Clinical Dietitian to figure this stuff out under normal circumstances.

We are designed to move- not sit on a couch or in a chair or laying in a bed for the bulk of the day. Beyond the burning of calories, our joints need movement in order to maintain themselves in a healthy state and the same is true of muscles and connective tissues. There are many great ways to exercise, but swimming is among the best as it uses the whole body, is aerobic, low impact and provides positive and negative resistance. You do not see many fat swimmers (people who swim regularly).

And drink enough water. Most Americans do not drink enough water- not tea, fruit juice, sports drinks or soda. Water. You would be amazed if you knew how many people come to clinics and ERs thinking something is wrong when they are just constipated. A sedentary lifestyle, not enough hydration and bad diet can do that.

Most Americans eat too much, eat too much junk, do not drink enough water and do not move enough. It does not take a watch to fix that set of problems.
While you're right about the root causes, you're missing the point. It's great that you've got a good head for the math and the root causes, but you can't say that everybody does, or has the same motivation that you do.

The Apple Watch can, and will, help people with motivational or data problems. Which, we argue, is a large percentage.
The part that he may not be aware of is that it has been shown that simply tracking an activity (be it eating or exercise) encourages more of that activity.   And that tracking feature is something that Apple Watch and iPhone have introduced that, 10 years ago didn't exist.  (the closest was a pad and pencil -- but that lacked too much information:   You could record how many minutes you walked but not the distance or speed).
Completely agree. Data and tracking can be giant forces.
Data tracking and Bio-feedback is are powerful things, more than I ever realized. This is just me obviously, but I cannot get a sinus rhythm EKG on my Watch 4  if I look at the graph while being recorded, it always returns an inclonclusive result. The graph is all over the place.  If I take the reading without looking I get a sinus rhythm.  Spooky.

  • Apple interested in Sony's 3D camera sensor technology, report says

Apple could certainly not go wrong partnering with Sony.  Not directly related to 3D but about Sony. Having just returned from Disney with my new Sony Alpha A7 iii and taking hundreds of handheld night shots I am certainly a convert to Sony technology.  I have never seen such amazing low light photographs, utterly staggering and no post-processing required. This after decades of using high-end Canon bodies and L lenses.
