  • Apple Watch Series 4 fall detection credited with saving another life

Who here saw the headline and started singing "that" song from The Fray?

  • New Philips Hue bulbs updated with Bluetooth connectivity

"HomeKit is not supported in these bulbs over Bluetooth and still requires the Philipe Hue Bridge"

So, why would they do that?
I see only one reason:  Spying.
.... Well, maybe a second possibility:   Stupidity

The LifeX bulbs I bought for my grandson work great.   So does the Insignia garage door opener.  Both can use a hub if you want.   But the hubs are all Apple devices (AppleTV, HomePod or a stay-at-home iPad).  Especially for a door opener/lock I don't trust anybody but Apple to have access.
All bluetooth bulbs need a cloud account to store scenes and other stuff that the Bridge normally does.   Philips probably doesn't want to build out a cloud infrastructure so for people that need more functionality they'll just add a Bridge.

  • Ten US states file suit to block proposed Sprint & T-Mobile merger

I was basically for this merger until I just spoke to a Sprint employee that said the company was RIF'n employees in lieu of cheaper Asian labor based on the potential merger.
It's potentially a net loss for many stateside jobs.  That's enough for many here to block the merger.

  • Apple's Craig Federighi says Catalyst will boost quality of both Mac & iPad apps

    MacPro said:
I like Fed but he's mostly wrong here.

Catalyst will bring more Apps to the Mac but the quality is solely dependent upon
developer ability and quality of frameworks.

Honestly the most intriguing apps I've seen recently are largely coming from the Web

    Airtable
    Notion.so
    Milanote

and more are showing the power and reach of web based applications.   I think mobile and desktop
Apps are simply not differentiating themselves enough nor do they provide any significant performance
    advantages over browser based tools.

I feel the more the Mac can get away from anything browser based the better.  Just take the Netflix app on the Apple TV as an example and compare to the interface in Safari.  How much simpler and secure is a dedicated app over using the web?  Think of a news app on the Apple TV compared to the nightmare of one in Safari with the page jumping all over the place as ads pop in.
Agreed.   I hope some of the new frameworks and API allow developers to go beyond what is constrained mainly to web standards.

  • Developers talk about being 'Sherlocked' as Apple uses them 'for market research'

Duet owner...it has value so long as it supports platforms beyond Mac.  That's your marketing angle.
