  • Apple TV vs. Roku -- comparing the two best 4K set-top streamers

NVIDIA has two new Shield TV models coming out very soon. They are in the same price range as the Apple TV 4K but way, way, way more powerful.
    Not really

  • Editorial: Samsung hasn't copied Apple TV+ yet, but it's only a matter of time

I think Sammy might avoid this craze.    TV streaming streaming is the new "I'm going to create a music store" that would be iTunes competitors trotted out to get their name out there.   Sammy has a great TV business and solid phone business but how do they lock people in?   I'm not buying a Samsung TV, Phone or Tablet just to watch their content.   Hell I don't even really need Apple TV+...I have no idea how Apple is going to sustain its value.

  • AirDrop & device tracking only the beginning of Ultra Wideband in the iPhone

    Options seem almost limitless.

UWB can track items down to the centimeters in accuracy.   This opens up the benefits of Beacons at another level.     It should allow for music and video to "follow you" through the home.   Allow for HomeKit scenes or actions to be hyperlocal.   There will less need to have motions sensors when UWB knows when you walk into a room and even knows what area of the room you're in so that lights or other devices just in your area can turn on.

UWB can actually transfer data faster than USB so there's little need to even switch protocols for data transfer.    Clearly Apple is serious about the technology because they've added it to both iPhones and have built their custom chip.     Will this UC1 end up in a refreshed Apple TV or HomePod or will see specific external transceivers offered that blanket the room with UWB signals?

I imagine that Apple will find a way to bridge worlds via software to take devices that are Bluetooth or Wifi and connect them to UWB products so that consumers can gracefully upgrade their systems.

  • Editorial: Does Apple have the mettle to fight for Mac success in the Pro market?

    Nope.

Based on past history of just abandoning anything that takes a modicum of effort
it would be unwise for those who are not of the Apple Sheep cloth to put much faith
in Apple being consistent with any product at this level.    You only need look at

    1.  The demise of the Xserve server and RAID
    2.  Apple acquiring and doing nothing with PowerSchool.
    3.  The neglect of iBook Author despite the small but fanatical fan base
    4.  Aperture’s slow decaying death
    5.  OS X Server turning into a toy

Apple’s spent their money on AI companies and other ancillary technologies but they haven’t spent much effort
into growing their Pro apps beyond routine small features and maintenance updates.

I’d trust Apple if I had a few workstations to purchase but I’d be wary with committing to anything more than that.

  • Inside Apple's fantastically fast new Mac Pro

I can't get over what a monster this thing is.  Apple's "pro" machines have always been more marketed to prosumers/power users rather than true workstation users.  This machine changes everything.

I'm not up on PC workstation class machines, so a question for someone who is:  Is there anything even close to this?
Yes and no.   Don't expect a lot of innovation coming from Intel they're likely to skip next years PCI-Express 4.0 evolutionary step and refresh most of their Xeon class hardware with PCI-Express 5.0 which employs a lot of new technology chiefly a new CXL Interconnect  .  NVME SSD on PCI-Express 4 are already doing 5Gbps reads and very fast writes but many people feel like existing PCI-E limitations limit the benefits of  that extra speed  After PCI-Express 5 you're going to see 4-Level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM4) which will not only get PCI-E 6.0 to 64 Gigatransfer but it'll be key in 100Gbps Ethernet for Data Centers and more.

The obvious question is who needs this bandwidth?  AI,  8K and VR encoding,  Machine Learning,  Databases as always and even gaming.   I think Apple has designed or workstation form factor that is going to be able to scale with the insane amount of bandwidth increases we have coming in just 4-5 years.
