If these are not masks that Apple somehow magically have come up with independently of all other sources, Apple should get out of the queue of HC institutions and countries across the planet desperately clamoring for such masks on the global market.
20 million masks to Apple means some others needy in another country probably would go short of masks. (that is how brutal the global market for masks is right now)

Having the masks on hand, Apple should donate the masks to the US federal pooled resources so they can be distributed to those needing them most, and get out of the business of virtue signaling.

you need experienced companies run by people like Cook, who know how to bleed the most out of the supply chain.
No, you don't. You need virtue signaling companies to stay out of the global supply queue when they have no direct need for the masks.

There are countries around the world cheering when they manage to get hold of 1.5 million masks, so their health care workers don't have to use the same masks 10 times or more.

Countries out there have to set up secret transports of masks in order not to be robbed or have their shipments seised in transit (like Turkey did with medical supplies transported through the country), or countries that simply cannot effort to pay, or loose in competition with entities such as Apple who can afford to.

If Apple actually used its buying power and logistics skills to supply countries and areas that are in most need without bragging about it, I would not say a thing except praise. Now they are only operating in a reprehensible manner driving prices up, and limiting critical supply to others.
You have no fucking idea what you're talking about. And yet you're so confident about your statements. Impressive.

Also, who exactly is harmed when Apple "brags" (your term) about it? The worst it could possibly do is incentivize other companies to do more. Oh, the horror.

Sourcing 20M masks and designing/shipping a new face shield is now defined as "virtue signalling"?

Fucking amazing. These are 2 of the most tangible things I've read of ANY company doing, in terms of directly impacting this crisis.

We’re going through this pandemic now but after it’s over we’ll be dealing with a decimated economy for a decade that will make the Great Depression look like a minor slowdown. And the government will use it as an excuse to grant even more power to itself in the name of ‘saving’ us. You don't have to be paranoid to know that there’s a think tank somewhere right now taking notes on how this goes down, how easy it is to instill fear and panic in the population with the objective of controlling them.

Just read a report about a Kentucky county ordering Coronavirus patients to wear GPS ankle bracelets so they can be tracked.
I'm concerned by your issues of tracking people who are highly contagious but too arrogant and ignorant to stay home with a conspiracy of the gov't using this to get everyone tracked with ankle bracelets. What Jefferson County, Kentucky is doing should warrant commendation, not condemnation, for dealing with dangerous people without threatening to lock them away in a room when they're actively hurting society.
So I guess you would also be okay with sending cops into a church to arrest all the congregants for violating the stay-at-home-order? Isn’t it amazing what the government can do after declaring an emergency? The Constitution goes out the window as well as the first and second amendments. All for the ‘good’ of society of course.
I am 100% ok with coronavirus patients wearing GPS ankle bracelets (myself included), and 100% ok with arresting congregants in any place of worship if there's a lockdown order in place (myself included). I'm the last person in favor of giving the government oppressive power, but since many people are too fucking stupid and too selfish to act in a manner that would not cause great harm to others, I'm fine with temporary measures meant to decrease the chances of this harm.

Anyone gathering in a church/mosque/synagogue today is a selfish PoS and exhibits criminal danger to others.  So many outbreaks are being traced back to such congregations. So yes, these assholes can all be arrested for all I care, as lives will be saved. People get arrested for a LOT less.

And if you're NOT ok with measures to deter people who you know are infected from going out, I don't know what to tell you.

  • Senators raise privacy concerns over Apple's COVID-19 screening app [u]

These senators have fucking nothing better to do during this time? Everything is imploding, and they decide they want to spend energy on this, a screening tool that asks for zero identifiable information and asks general questions that anyone can create using a Google form? Incredible.  This has fuck-all to do with HIPAA, these aren't patient records.

    Stay safe and healthy!

I'm sure Apple would LOVE to hear your alternative to "never manufacturing in China again".  Where the fuck should Apple manufacture the bulk of it's products?
