How does split screen work? When I swipe left all I ever get is a sliver of Calendar. Is that it?
Pull down from the top of the right pane in split screen mode to see the iOS split screen app selector. Then you can change calendar to whatever you want.

I was excited when this came out, and it's pretty useful sometimes, but the one thing I really wanted it to do, and I *know* I'm not alone, is search for memes. Apple can find a stack of avocados but it can't find giant letters sprawled on a pic? This is a huge peve of mine. And that would be something genuinely useful, especially for anyone under 30.
I realize it's not the solution you're looking for, but a workaround would be to take memes and manually put them into their own album. If you do this on a Mac, it will sync with your iOS device, potentially making it a little easier/quicker.

An app I used to use, Meme Generator, at one time automatically put user-generated memes into their own album. However, that functionality appears to have been broken since early 2016, based on what I can see in my own album.

  • Major apps abandoning Apple Watch, including Google Maps, Amazon & eBay [u]

I'm trying to think what 3rd-party apps I use on my Watch. Slack, Facebook, and Delivery Status notifications come to mind, and I occasionally use the Starbucks app ,and I know I have a AAA app just in case. I've purged most of them a long time ago simply because I don't use them and because I'm not a fan of the watchOS Home Screen.
Carrot Weather is pretty great on the Apple Watch, especially the hyper-local alerts. I'm also digging Overcast since they added native podcast downloads. And I use Nike Run Club for running, and it's mostly reliable, but when I get a hard crash two miles into a run, it makes me want to throw my watch in the trash. I tested out Slopes while skiing earlier this year and was very impressed with that app.

Other than that, yeah, not much worthwhile in my experience. Which is fine — watchOS apps clearly are not the gold rush that the iOS App Store was.

I don't understand why all switch reviewers seem to have an issue with the lack of Netflix and other apps. I have way too many devices that support netflix already. On my main TV I have 4 devices with Netflix (Smart TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, PS4). I really don't need more devices with Netflix, or browsers, or Spotify, or chat. It is like saying you need more devices with a clock built in. I already have a whole scavenger hunt in my house twice a year when the time changes. What I want is fun family games that the PS4 lacks with a simplest possible menu so that I can go from booting up to playing my games as fast as possible.
I don't have an issue with the lack of Netflix (I just use my Apple TV for that by default). However, these things are important for some prospective buyers to know, because there are average consumers out there actually trying to weigh whether they should buy an iPad mini ($379) or a Nintendo Switch ($360 with a game). The point is, the Switch isn't really a "true" tablet. We're an Apple site, we always like to keep the focus on Apple, even when discussing competitors.

That said — you're right, this thing doesn't need to have Netflix (or a web browser) for my own use case.

I am hopeful that the forthcoming iOS integration goes beyond just parental controls — it would be nice to be able to manage your account, authorize purchases and initiate downloads remotely, for example. Simple stuff, but it would add value.

I'd love to have a modern, home surveillance system hat tied to my iPhone and used HomeKit, but I don't want a signal camera setup. Ideally I'd like to have a single, centralized system that I can then plug an Ethernet cable into my router, and then use many PoE and/or WiFi cameras around (the outside) of the house. Is there anything like that or only the old hat setups?
Outdoor HomeKit cameras are coming, but I don't think any of them are wired. The Withings Home has an Ethernet port, but that's an indoor-only camera. Outdoor options announced (but not yet available) include Ring, Kuna, and Skybell, though none of them (as far as I can tell) are wired. Indoor camera options are also coming in the form of the aforementioned Nokia/Withings Home, Canary, and Honeywell Lyric.

If you want a whole-home security solution that also taps into HomeKit, the Honeywell Lyric may be worth considering, whenever HomeKit support is added. But the two Honeywell cameras coming out for the Lyric platform appear to be indoor-only.
