  • How to use the new text effects in Messages on iPhone with iOS 18

Before this story disappears, could the author or AppleInsider staff add screenshots for the ways to invoke the effects and screen recordings of what the effects look like.

Of utmost importance, tell us if the bold, italics, underline, and strike-through, shown on the only screenshot, will work with RCS.  It seems very unlike Apple to have a panel that’s part RCS and part iMessage only—especially without some sort of labeling. Most Apple users I know, exchange text messages with many Android friends, associates, customers, vendors and/or relatives—not exclusively with Apple users.

1.) And does that style part of the panel use RCS or is there some other method needed to style with RCS?
2.) What is the known or guesstimated adoption rate of RCS like on both iOS and Android?
3.) When did Android users first have RCS available?
4.) What does an Android recipient with RCS see of my styled text?—Android screenshot?
5.) Would it be wise to wait to use bold or italics or other two styles until a later date?
6.) How would someone without RCS receive the text message— as plain text?
7.) Or with a style code in front of text?

Thank you in advance if you can expand the article to offer much more information.

  • Apple's iPhone breaks sales record as smartphone market recovers

Apple's 4th quarter ended on Sept 29th just over two weeks before the end of their financial quarter. I guess Canalys may use different quarters, probably like Loonies and Toonies same general shape just different.
Its commonly accepted practice to state fiscal quarter as in AAPL’s case that occurs June through September as Q4, but to say Q3 2024 if your refer to the calendar quarter in which it occurs. It’s confusing, so I prefer Q3 C2024 or Cal Q3 2024.   I think I’ve seen it that way.  IIRC
There are enough companies not in sync with calendar quarters that a notation is needed if referring to calendar quarter.
I think companies might do this so they have time for tax prep for end of fiscal year.  Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

  • Apple A16 chip is now being produced in the USA

These chips would be shipped to China AND India for assembly?
Yup.. that's exactly how it would work.  It might sounds nuts, but the costs of everything are figured out to the penny and if it was cheaper to do it elsewhere, they would.
I think the silicon dies might go back to Taiwan, Japan or South Korea for chip packaging, then to where ever for assembly into the final product. Could be China, Vietnam, India, Brazil, who knows. It's global supply chain. A lot of people moan about Apple products being assembled in China, but that is akin to complaining about wanting to do landscaping or grass cutting jobs.    …

AMKOR, based in nearby City of Tempe, is building a $2 billion chip packaging factory next door to the north Phoenix TSMC Fab in neighboring Peoria.
From ABC News: “… Amkor is set to package and test chips for industry heavyweights Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Apple Inc. …” [ at the new 500,000 sq ft plant just west of the TSMC plant.]

  • Vitals app will make you wear the Apple Watch while you sleep

My Watch Ultra I, lasts over a day unless I have a really long workout, which if using the fitness App, takes frequent measurements that can use higher than average power.

While I could and have worn my wartch during a shower or bath, I use the time before, during and after to charge my watch.   I used to swap between an older watch and most recent watch for charging.

A great sleep app that tracks the same measurements mentioned in the article is AutoSleep.  It’s uncannily good, including capturing my sleep on the couch automatically—even having information on sleep time, quality sleep time and deep sleep time.

When on certain medications, I check respiration and heart rate if the medications affect those biometrics.  Since it’s a year older, it tracks blood oxygen as well.  That still works as I got the watch before the lawsuit had Apple putting that feature (SPO2) on hold, until the lawsuit is resolved.

  • Apple is ramping up for a big iPhone 16 sales boost thanks to Apple Intelligence

Apple’s AI features will start to appear around the December to February timeframe.  From the WWDC sessions I attended, and looking at the hooks for third party apps, I can imagine Apple’s first party apps will be pleasant to use.

Today’s hyped AI that a lot of you are complaining about is indeed annoying at times.  But that’s the LLM generative AI. Maybe we’re expecting too much.  All types of ML or AI are improving at an accelerating rate with improvements marked more in 6 months rather than yearly—certainly noticeably improved yearly. Disregard the hype, be patient and look forward to the coming improvements.

Apple’s three level approach is attractive in that generative AI like CHAT GPT is only one of the three levels, and only if local or private cloud AI doesn’t provide you what you want.

1.)  The first level, on-device, will be able to learn and take your corrections with durability.
2.)  The private cloud AI, the 2nd prong, will be encrypted and anonymized. Apple would likely curate that intelligence to weed out bad information.
3.)  The third prong is your option, and you have to consciously delect the option of going to the third party AI.  It looks like Apple might take on more partners for third party AI LLM choices.

Apple is rarely first mover and usually releases when they’ve refined something new.  Sure, you can give me a list of shortcomings—I’d bet my list is longer.  But on the whole, other than Siri, Apple’s use of machine learning has been pretty useful even if in subtle ways.

My prediction from what I learned at WWDC, and from past experience with Apple striving to under-promise and over-deliver, is that AI and Siri will be a pleasant experience by January or February. In the keynote and on subsequent interviews, Apple revealed the new session nature of Siri queries. They demonstrated follow up queries related merely by session proximity eg.  Make ‘XYZ’ appointment.  Oh, and remind Joe of that in a text.

They demonstrated stumbling and changing what you said in a command or query.   That shows real life usefulness. (especially for me)

When do the best deals happen on iPhones? In the March timeframe.   Consider the iPhone 16 upgrade for March and get a good deal — it will time well with the AI features.

For many of us, upgrading in the Fall is fine—we’re patient and will be happy for improvements when they are delivered—when they are ready.
