  • 2018 iPhone SE predicted to be a minor upgrade, if it happens at all

Mr. Kuo, the SE 2 will have an A11, hd retina, stereo speakers, and better camera system.

I have no sources, but it is true.
    I hope your non-sources are correct.  :D

I value my SE for its size (though you won't find me complaining that it's also the lowest priced iPhone), my only regret is that 128GB wasn't available at launch. An updated processor, camera and TouchID would be enough to make me buy. Better sound and HD Retina would be very nice; 3D Touch and FaceID I wouldn't expect. Wireless charging does not excite me.

I think I'm really saying that I liked the original formula: take the key elements from the then-current 6S and put as many as fit into a classic-sized case.

  • macOS High Sierra App Store settings menu not effectively secured by user password

Agreed. The user accounts on our Macs do not have admin privilege, there's an admin account for the times that a lot of, err, administration, is required.

That said, last time I talked to Apple support (about a year ago I guess), they told me that Apple did not recommend user accounts without admin privilege and urged me to change it. I was surprised by this (no rationale was offered) and I think this incident demonstrates that every simple step to reduce vulnerability is worth taking. Hopefully Apple will revise its guidance, I am currently ignoring it.

  • Introductory app subscription pricing coming to App Store

I'm deeply opposed to software subscriptions too.

If I buy an app but then gradually stop needing/wanting it, I can still access my files and do any minor work at no further cost using my gradually degrading but usually still useful app. If I still use it as much as I anticipated, I will buy any upgrade so the developer gets their fair reward too; if not, I can give the money to some other developer to meet my new needs (or simply to access their superior app).

With a subscription model, using Adobe as an example, I have to keep paying the same amount every month just to open my files. For any app that isn't part of my professional work every month, that's just nonsense. A year's subscription leaves me with nothing in month 13 so no way to wean myself off the app - that can't be reasonable.

  • Google releases two experimental photo apps for iOS

Setting aside all the distrust of Google, aren't these apps a bit lame?

Take a selfie every time there's no movement in the frame, use a finger to run a video backwards and forwards? Where's the need for computer vision or AI (the other AI, that is) in those? I don't honestly see much innovation either.

I would probably have tried them if they were a little more exciting. So perhaps they are just about harvesting pictures - that's sad.

Say what you like, it still looks like the little guy got it first and the big guy wanted it and took it. It's bad PR at minimum.
