  • EU companies are complaining that US big tech is ignoring a new antitrust law

If I side load an app onto my new iPhone, does that void the warranty?

Serious question: suppose I load some dreadfully (or maliciously) coded app that seeks to occupy all the processor cores at 100% all the time in the background. My battery then lasts for a much shorter time than Apple said it would, so I innocently claim I have a faulty phone. Or, I have to recharge it so frequently that it needs a new battery within the warranty period. There must be lots of examples, much more serious than this contrived example, where Apple would spend time offering support etc but be unable to help (‘cos they don’t know about the app I’m using).

The monopoly on offering an App Store is a powerful position to have but, to me, Apple is using it responsibly and making my life on my phone easier and more secure. Shouldn’t the legislators be getting their heads around the possible abuses of this monopoly situation and outlawing them instead? Whilst the balance of benefit is to the user, why change it based on hypothetical abuse? I’m quite sure that I gain as it is, though there needs to be that motivation to the “gatekeepers” to continue innovating and adapting.

  • UK's latest embarrassing technology demand centers on phone thefts

Could we please stop these irrelevant rambling political pieces from this author.

There seems to be a technology story in there somewhere, between technology companies and the mayor of London, but dragging in a random selection of 'UK is doomed' political stories is not useful and does not belong here.

And the "ballet box" - are we dragging in the arts too? /s

  • Apple releases iOS 17.0.3 & iPadOS 17.0.3 with overheating fixes

Today, a lot of software development organizations follow a continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD or simply CD) model which, in theory, means that every build or every daily build is in a releasable state. In other words, if they had to ship the daily build, it would be good to go and fully tested. That's the goal, but I'm not sure Apple or very many software development organizations hit that goal perfectly. Getting closer to the goal still represents a significant improvement.
It can also have the opposite effect if new requirements/features continue to be drip-fed into the proposed release. That means there is a continuous supply of new, hence immature and buggy, components.

Is the WiFi and Cell bars disappearing when you are not in an App something anyone else is seeing.  The second I open an App the bars come back.
Yes, I have seen this several times (iPhone 15Pro), exactly as you describe. Too soon to know it it's been fixed.

  • Early iPhone 15 tests after overheat-fixing patch don't show any performance losses

Hopefully they'll go on to fix some more bugs now! When I went to install the update, I noticed that all the info across the top of the home screen (eg time, battery, network etc) had disappeared (and not for the first time). The cameras also struggle in difficult lighting situations that my iPhone Xs took in its stride. Disappointing.
