  • 'iPhone 8' software bar expected to replace Apple's iconic home button with gesture contro...

Did you see the picture in the Bloomberg article? Eager to point to various features already implemented by other manufacturers (as if...).

it's the 'fake news' cycle... you get clicks and twitter wars and other stuff, but in the end, it's less about who did it first vs who did it best. I may be a sheeple now, and in the end, the actual 'phone' and 'function' will all be consistently one in the same... it will be the back end that makes the difference, both in terms of compelling user experience, and vendor profitability (,viability, and sustainability).

I wonder if Apple will use wind power in Iowa...
Probably, since Iowa already has a very impressive wind generation infrastructure. Too bad wind generators are so ugly.
    indeed

I'm a native, and unless you like looking at corn fields and hog setups, in most parts of the state, Wind Generators are an improvement;-)

(semi related:  TIL: The self name of the indigenous people of Iowa is  'Baxoje' (bah-u'-cha), meaning "grey snow" which is what Iowa looks like from November to March.
the name Iowa comes from what other tribes called them when the met French Explorers:  ayuhwa   (I'-yuh-way')  meaning "Sleepy Ones")

  • Samsung to face off against Apple's 'iPhone 8' with 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 8 [u]

A stylus? Who wants to use a Stylus? Ew! Note: Apple Pencil is not a stylus so don't even mention that!

I don't get why they'd try and release anything around the time of the iPhone. Do they really think people are going to pay attention to a new Note model right in the middle of a brand new iPhone coming out? Who are they kidding!
They will in some parts of the world that are not as Apple centric as the USA.
Some mobile phone outlets here in the UK seem to be wall to wall Samsung (Galaxy A mostly)
Out of curiosity, I went into one a  year or so back and asked about their iPhone deals. Reluctantly, they showed me but made it clear that iPhones were so 'old and decrepit' that I should only be looking at Samsung devices.
Steerage towards profit.   Samsung gives stores more profit on their sales, plus Samsung requires you to buy the phones in bulk, so there is incentive to sell it inactive inventory [more you buy up front, better discount on wholesale price, but higher risk if it doesn't sell].

Plus, Apple has what 3 to 5 phones as active skus and 4 iPads at any one time.  The fit nicely on a 4' wall display.  The sell themselves... so why invest in any more floorspace than necessary.

    ... price?
    When it ships, we'll know.
How about NOT giving free publicity to these companies if they don't supply the price and also availability in the USA and Europe (at least).
Make it a condition and if these people are serious and not just testing the market then they will cough up the price.
In conformance to your request, then apple insider shouldn't report on any iPhone, Mac or iPad rumors... After all, it's free publicity to Apple for non-shipping, non-priced products

The fact they actually got a test unit and reported real-world data is better than just quoting spec sheets.  The reporting could be better (a test bed comparison, operational kinks, failures etc), but i don't see where they crossed any ethical or journalistic lines.

  • Netflix to spend $7B on content in 2018

7 billion is mostly licensed content. How much are they going to spend on original? 2 billion? Think about how many shows and movies Netflix produces; if they are doing that with 1 - 3 billion, then a 1 billion outlay by Apple just to get started in the game is pretty serious.
^^^this^^^.    You got to figure that all the content ITMS delivers for others, and apple considers that zero cost (they didn't buy it, the customers did), and they get their 5-30% cut of that.  Just build great hardware, and make enough on the Content delivery to make the bond payments.

However, getting a 'Sopranos' / 'Game of Thrones'  like must-see content to drive 10-20 million iPad/AppleTV buyers into the fold every season isn't a bad variation of a business model either....
