  • Apple hikes repair, replacement & AppleCare+ prices for iPhones

The thieves have new techniques for acquiring your devices as you pass through crowds (similar to how staged accidents work). Those people you thought were doing their thing on their laptops next to you --some of them are in on it too. Apple's activation-locks and iCloud Lost/Erase modes don't work, though if you have a passcode on your device, your data may be safe ...for a while.
When I said, "I'm careful...", I was referring to being careful with the physical handling of my electronics - I wasn't talking about keeping them secure. I couldn't care less who sees what is on my phone - just lots of stupid videos and photos that are absolutely worthless and meaningless to anyone but me.

After years of buying AppleCare(+) warranties on iMacs, MBPs, and iPhones and never having benefited, I've decided to no longer purchase them. I'm careful with my electronic devices and Apple products seem reliable enough on their own to not need an extended warranty. The only time I ever had an out-of-warranty repair performed was on a 2011 iMac, but that ended up being after the AppleCare warranty had expired and a "special program" covered the proactive hard drive replacement.

  • Should you preorder Apple's iPhone 8, or wait for the iPhone X?

I would probably still be using my 4S had I not wanted a larger screen for easier viewing which lead to me upgrading to a 6. I decided to upgrade to a 6S+ primarily for the camera improvements, but soon became frustrated with the loss of one-handed operation. I just couldn't get excited enough about the 7 to upgrade and the same goes for the 8.

I'm still on the fence about OLED technology. The LCD displays are plenty good enough for me. I liked the idea of an "edge-to-edge" display in hopes that I could get the plus-sized screen in a non-plus form factor. I like the looks of the X...when it's off. As mentioned above, the "notch" comes across as very un-Apple-like. When I saw it during the event, I felt another "Steve would never have allowed this" moment.

Speed hasn't been an issue for me. I don't game and I can't recall ever using my phone and wishing it were faster.

The X would be a somewhat significant upgrade from my 6S+ (jumping over the 7 and 8). Right now, there's less chance I'll pre-order and more change I'll wait to see it in person before I buy. I just haven't been able to get all that excited about upgrades the last few years as I have in the past.

  • $179 Apple TV 4K boasts high dynamic range support, free 4K upgrades to iTunes movie purch...

Considering I have no 4K-capable TVs (and can't see any REAL difference even between 720p and 1080p from 10' away on my 55" TV), I'll pass on this revision. I'm disappointed there's no much-improved remote.

  • Logitech's MX Ergo trackball provides ergonomics, multiple device control to Mac users

The 90s called - it wants its trackball back. :)

Using a trackball is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I tried one years ago and just couldn't adapt to it. After decades of computing, I still prefer a traditional mouse.
