Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that he will run for governor, after weeks of speculation that he would not enter the gubernatorial race.

Schwarzenegger, a moderate Republican, announced his decision this afternoon at the local NBC studio, during the taping of "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."

"The people are doing their job in California, the politicians are not doing their job," Schwarzenegger said. "The person who has failed the people more than anyone is Gray Davis and that is why I'm going to run for governor."

The studio audience whooped and cheered after he made the surprise announcement. In the course of his interview with Leno, the popular movie star and former body builder invoked several of the lines that made him famous, including, "Say hasta la vista to Gray Davis," and "When I go to Sacramento, I'm going to pump it up."

The California recall has already been pumped up enough. Arianna Huffington and her divorced husband are running against each other, Larry Flint is in there, and plenty of weirdo Republicans who could never get elected under normal circumstances in California. Not to mention people who simply want to go up to people and shake their hand saying "Vote for me."

Who ever wins will inherit a monstrous mess and a still pissed off electorate. It'll be pretty fun/funny to watch from the side lines though. Make great Daily Show episodes profiling all the crazy candidates.

Wow, that's a surprise. I thought Arianna had a chance, but now I think he's almost a sure-thing, with Feinstein out.

gary coleman has also declared he's running.

    seriously.

yet jerry springer decides NOT to run in ohio, because he felt that any message he might try to get across would be overshadowed by his history (and probably those unfavorable polls).

isn't it always the way? by jerry realizing he SHOULDN'T run, he's shown he's probably the most qualified of any of these yahoos.

that should scare all of us.

and have jerry springer orchestrate the whole thing.

Gray Davis of course. There will be Gray Davis, the lone Democrat, and 355 other people, among them, several Republicans.

Gray Davis has nothing to worry about.

Maybe I don't have the rules right but there's two components to this referendum. First is that Davis should be replaced. That takes 50% of the vote? Then if he is voted out then who replaces him. So Davis isn't really running.

There's a risk both ways for the Democrats if they don't put someone up. It seems that the "conservative" vote is split many ways. So if Davis is voted out and there's a reasonable democrat to vote for then that person is assured of winning. BUT of there is someone for Democrats to vote for then this would increase the chance Davis gets the boot. If Davis is voted out and there's no one for Democrats to vote for then it's a toss up.

    Check your facts dude....

    Quote:

Voters will be asked whether Davis, reelected to office only last November, should be recalled and then asked who should succeed him. More than 400 people have expressed interest in running although less than 10 have so far completed the forms which are due back on Saturday.

    that's from Rueters News Service

Again, your ignorance is shining. Gray Davis isn't running for Governor. He isn't running for anything, unless you consider running for not getting fired. He's only on the first part of the ballet, the part where people decide whether or not to fire him. Then people vote on who succeeds him. This part may consist of 400 people, although it's likely that realistically only 30 or 40 will actually file, but no matter how many there are, Gray Davis won't be one of them.

Yes, it's true that he's suing to be allowed to have his name on the second part, but that's a bunch of dogshyt.

    Gee.............

I can just see the debate.

Arnold: Vhen I become Govener I vill Terminate all enemies of California and cause their vemen to lament.

Gary: What cho takin about Arnie?!

Larry Flint: I'm tired of seeing Californians get screwed like the girls in my magazine Hustler, vote for me. Hey potheads and perverts I'll legalize prostitution and weed if you vote me in.

In all seriousness this will be a circus. There isn't even an runoff for the candidates with the most votes. The reason you see so many out of the woodwork candididates is that the CANDIDATE THAT GETS THE MOST VOTES WILL WIN. So if the top vote getter gets 6% he/she/it is in.

While the previous post was accurate, you only need 60 signitures from registered voters of your party to get in. So you will see at least a few more file before Saturday. Regarless even if we only have 10 candidates, it will still be a circus. This will be an election for the ages.

    1) Celebrity candidates

    2) Nutjob candidates

    3) Porno King Candidate (may also be nutjob depending on your moral compass).

    4) Incumbent who refuses to give up.

    5) Messed up economy

    6) Kobe trial will start close to election date (this will have a big inpact on turnout and voter (hardly any to begin with) knowledge, especially in Southern California.

    7) California voters arn't all that bright and knowlegable (hardly any cali voters know that water rights is the states biggest issue).

Woo Hoo! Can't wait!!!!!!!! We only need O.J. to come back and run for this to be perfect.

Not so much... it seems pretty much a given that Arnold will not be opposed by any credible Republican candidate, unless you consider Issa credible. The Republican party in California is likely to circle the wagons on this one. It's really the only good shot they have at actually pulling this thing off.

Isn't that how all governor elections work in that state. They don't do run offs in regular elections?

True Scott, but as it is so simple to get on the ballot for a recall election, the chances of an election where there is no majority (50% or more for the winning candidate) is greatly increased. This is what the fringe candidates hope for. Thank God Lydon LaRousch doesn't reside in California!

No run off, the most votes gets you in, no matter how relativly few votes you get.
