Facebook attacks Apple over iOS 14 ad privacy program in full-page newspaper ads
junor said:I run a small online business and 90% of my customers come from running fb ads and the rest are people who were referred by my customers that came from fb ads. BIg companies like Apple and Microsoft don't need targeted advertising... They're already giants in their industries. Small businesses like mine depend on these targeted advertising because that's literally the only way we can market ourselves. We don't have a storefront so we don't have the benefit of people just happneing upon our store. We don't have the budget to run a large scale marketing campaign. Targeted advertising is cheap, because it only targets our ads to the relevant people, as well as effective. Facebook is right — this will be devastating for me and all of the small business owners throughout the world.
Let me just reassure you -- it is possible to communicate with other human beings without using FB. Small businesses existed prior to the existence of FB. And if Apple succeeds in stopping the unethical harvesting of private data by FB, smart small business owners will figure out a new way to reach their customers. One uplifting aspect of the constraints placed on small business by COVID has been the innovation that smart business owners have shown. Some people complain, others innovate. -

EU proposes sweeping regulations on Big Tech, hefty fines for noncompliance
One example could be the end of Apple highlighting its own product options in an App Store search. Apple and Google could also be forced to allow users to remove apps that come preinstalled on a device.Seems like no big deal.
Of all the anti-trust talk I hear, the one that is a genuinely big deal is the giant pile of money google pays Apple to be the default search engine on iPhone. That seems like anti-competitive collusion between two companies that jointly control the entire smartphone market. -
New iMac Pro & Apple TV hardware, increased MacBook Pro orders expected in 2021
randominternetperson said:Surely Apple will release Apple Silicon iMacs (non-pro) in the first half of calendar year 2021, it not the first quarter. I suppose the only reason they wouldn't would be to introduce a more radical change than just an internal update.I wonder if COVID supply chain issues explains why the mini, MBA, and MBP13 had zero change to physical form. Otherwise, perhaps we would have seen new physical forms there too.The iMac is a much lower volume product. Perhaps that, combined with a later release, will make it easier to update the chassis -
New iMac Pro & Apple TV hardware, increased MacBook Pro orders expected in 2021
It’s interesting how when the world seems to be falling apart, Apple digs deep and comes up with amazing products. The iPhone had its beginnings during the financial crisis and ensuing Great Recession and now Apple silicon Macs are arriving during COVID.
I just can’t overstate how excited I am about the Mac right now. It feels like Apple is finally realizing the 90s era dream for the Mac — an incredibly powerful RISC workstation with the most advanced OS and software stack, resulting in a computer that Wintel just can’t compete with.To paraphrase Captain Ramius, “....and now they will tremble again at the sound of our silence. Make ready to deploy the fanless MacBook Air!”
