I actually created my first touch scroll area mockup about two years ago, then someone pointed out Apple had a similar patent. It's funny they patented it about five years ago, perhaps 4, and still we have to deal with the crap they give us.

Yea I mean this is a perfect solution of the crappy scroll ball, and the second mouse button (don't get me wrong I am used to lifting my finger now, but I think a physical mouse button would be best). It is a really good drawing, kinda thought that it was officially leaked by Apple or something.

There are already mice with touch pads out there:

I think having the surface of the mouse do touch would be better as you get better control.

The shape in the patent application looks a bit like the Logitech M555b:

I honestly don't know why Apple can't just buy the mice from Logitech and maybe rebrand them. Their scroll wheels are great and they are bluetooth so they connect easily to any Mac and the battery life in them is the best I've seen in a wireless mouse.

If that top shell was touch-based, the wheel isn't really needed at all.

    Ah thanks.

The split shell makes it two physical buttons. Something that isn't in Apple's patent drawings.

That split shell is my drawing, not Apple's. Don't expect something sensible like that from Apple when it comes to their new mouse.
