I would think some serious missteps happened if Andorid doesn?t surpass the iPhone OS installed based on iPhones and Touches within two years and outpace devices shipping with an Android-based OS within a year.

You always hear bitching about "oh, I scratched the back of it... WHAT DO I DO!?", or "OMG, my keys slightly scratched the screen -- IT'S RUINED!"

Most other phone owners don't give a shit; they just keep using their devices, battle scars and all.

I carry my phone in my pocket, keys in the other. No battle scars at all, course I do have an ncase for it & protective film for the screen (which is more for friction reduction than protection).

I've used the DROID and was hugely unimpressed. The tactile response of every touch phone I've tried has been junk, no wonder they all have to include a hardware keyboard. Also, the design isn't intuitive at all, you gotta hunt through stuff to figure out how to do anything.

Not sure what speed advantage they are talking about either, they don't feel any faster to me than my iPhone.

Motorola is probably smart to try to carve out a niche for Droid, otherwise they'd simply languish with no appealing features whatsoever. My problem with the ads are that they are aiming too young. They need to aim a little higher than the IQ of the typical "Transformers" moviegoer.

There is a lot of similar marketing techniques going on between the Moto Droid and the short lived Helio.

    Quote:

Wireless company Helio launched today a new suite of mobile services designed to appeal to 18 to 34 year olds, as well as "the young at heart," according to the company.

The company's new offerings will be among the first of its kind to jump on the highly coveted social networking bandwagon. "MySpace on Helio" is designed specifically for MySpace users allowing them to post content directly to their MySpace page from their Helio handheld device

The new services are targeted to "consumers who have grown up wireless," said Redsun in a phone interview.

    Quote:

On July 13, 2006, Helio began running TV commercials with the slogan, "Don't Call Us a Phone Company; Don't Call it a Phone." Alongside the television commercials, Helio also began advertising on billboards and in the print media, specifically in magazines that serve the 18-32 demographic, and very heavily on MySpace.

Hmm. Maybe there's a conspiracy going on. Lol.

"Just read an article about are macs for gays, females or graphic designers"? I have to ask, where was this article?

    Such is life in advertising.

A bit sexist to me. I have a scuba diving, skydiving, snowboarding 25 year old daughter in Med school that looks like the blonde at the end of this ad only she's 5'11" and she has a white iPhone!

    Sheez! Gimme a break!

I don't see it as insult to all women.

Motorola is playing on public opinion very common among non-Apple users - that Apple products are posh and targeting Paris Hilton & friends sort of clients.

It is basic and effective, if questionable strategy - find competition's weak spot (or at least perceived weak spot) and blow it sky high. In a way, it is something Apple has been doing for ages.

Is Motorola loosing "princess" market that way? Likely. But I guess that segment of buyers probably would never purchase phone named Droid.

I am surprised PC vendors haven't explored this approach so far - something like a princess gossiping with her friends over iSight (on her Macbook covered with flowery stickers) over Brad and Angie's millionth break up while doing her nails, against bunch of kids (both sexes) on a lan party having great fun playing a game (something not too aggressive, though).

    Smooth.

Or imply they crash all the time, have miserable software and can't communicate with digital cameras and other peripherals...

    Oh, wait...

I think people who think that "Apple products are posh and targeting Paris Hilton & friends sort of clients" (which is the purest form of dumbfuckery) grossly overestimate the number of people who think this way.

How many people think iPods are high end items only indulged in by celebrities and the like? How many people can't figure out that the iPhone costs exactly as much as the Droid or most other smartphones?

There's no "princess" market to lose, it's an idiotic conceit with no bearing on reality. iPhones are in the hands of truckers, dentists, teenagers, soccer moms, little league coaches, campers, surfers, retirees, lab assistants, carpenters and dog trainers. To try to redefine its appeal, at this point, as somehow "elitist", and to counter that ludicrous characterization with "angry, macho and loud" doesn't make a lot of sense. Except to this interesting little demographic you've described. Who are, well, you know.

Basically this new version has faster internet, GPS navigation and ability to download(buy) applications such as games.

The Phone will cost $199 for 8GB $299 for 16GB. Then you will have to buy a voice plan for at least $39.99/month along with a Data plan for $30/month for unlimited web surfing, then a text messaging plan for $5-$15/month.

Expect to pay $80+/month for the full service plan. I would expect AT&T will let you drop the data plan and just use this as a sweet touch screen phone.

Still, the Droid has a lot going for it. I'd say it's the first direct competitor to the iPhone. Android OS is set to take off. That's good for all of us as the two duke it out.

For instance, as a result of Droid success -- and I don't know how Apple might pull this off -- I'd wager that the next iPhone OS release is going to be on a multi-core iPhone and it is going to allow simultaneous app execution.

If Android wants to make inroads into the RIM/Apple empire, it needs to do so in a closed, well-controlled environment where ideally Google makes both the hardware and the software. You'ld think that companies had learned from Apple and RIM, as they are the prime examples of why that works better...

With the distinction that Apple is targeting the 'merits' of Microsoft products in these "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads, rather than insulting potential customers...
