And is it geared to special types of individuals rather than mainstream ones? In other words, someone who might have a Wacom drawing tablet...would they migrate to this?

    I would migrate to this...

I’d wager it’s like all their non-Mac products. It’s meant to accompany your PC, whether you’re on a Mac or not. I’d guess it will sync through iTunes like all iDevices and the AppleTV.

The intended user base can go either way depending on the “killer app(s)” For instance, if they get the publishers on board from the start they may have an easy winner. Chart of the Day shows Newspaper employees back to a 1950’s level. Of course, many things are automated these days but even with adjustment you can’t deny that the internet has affected print newspapers and other periodicals.

That brings up an interesting topic solipsism... that iTunes is currently used to connect all of apple's various devices.

This seems like a design trade-off that is reaching an inflection point. Initially it made sense to sync everything via iTunes because it was simpler for the user. Even though pictures and contacts don't have anything to do with iTunes, it was reasonable since the alternative was splitting functionality between quite a few apps with only a tiny bit of functionality in each. Either that or a separate app that would handle all the syncing, forcing all users to use iTunes as well as that 2nd app.

As our computing environments begins to incorporate and integrate more devices, it will no longer make sense cram all that functionality into Apple's music player. What's the solution? I wouldn't hazard a guess without seeing the exact functionality of the perpetually rumored apple tablet.

I have no solution but I can?t imagine Apple dropping iTunes which is, IMO, at the heart of the iPod success. The iDevice have all required a direct USB connection to the PC to sync and backup. Except for ActiveSync and MobileMe users who can have bookmarks (MM-only), calendars and contacts synced instantly.

The AppleTV an sync over WiFi or Ethernet, but that within it?s basic purpose so it?s expected. People have been asking for all WiFi-capable iDevices to sync over a LAN since day one. I understand Apple?s reservation here considering that even a 400Mbps USB connection takes a long time for this newer devices. However, I think that a tablet might be the first Apple handheld device that could benefit from WiFI LAN syncing to iTunes.

I?d like to at least see WAN WiFi (and even cellular) simple syncing (meaning not audio and video) through the Cloud and automatic downloads of subscribed newspapers and magazines so that I don?t have to fetch them. Like having your newspaper at your door and your magazine in the mailbox, I?d likely subscribe to a plethora of publications if they were automatically queued up like podcasts in iTunes waiting for me on the train, in the living room, breakfast table, nightstand or wherever. Am I asking for too much?

lol, i've always been astounded by that too.

Modern mobile phones are connected to 3 or 4 types of wireless networks... and yet we have to plug in a cord to sync or back-up a changed address book entry!? Completely ludicrous if you ask me.

That's still an area where all mobile phones fall short. Basic functionality like that has still yet to be implemented. And don't even get me started on the fact that mobile phones don't provide access to worldwide phone listings.

An apple tablet may finally force the industry to address those shortcomings. If apple has to rethink syncing amidst an increasingly complex computing ecosystem, perhaps we'll finally see perpetually synced mobile phones become a reality.

The prediction is very much correct. Its a stretch to say that anyone who buys an ebook reader would buy a $600 Apple Tablet, but anyone who spends $400 on a Kindle, is definitely in the demographic for the tablet.

I read 2 to 3 books per week. On my Kindle no less. Nice ad hominem, though.

My point was that any back lit screen is not going to be usable for heavy reading. If you can deal with it, more power to you. Most readers will not.

The only way to do this would be to run some sort of VoIP app (which you can already do with your iPhone or iPod touch).

I would, if the tablet is wifi only I'm not getting it, I want to be able to USE it on the go, and no city in the world is littered with wifi enough, and why should I drain my iphone for tablet stuff when they just could order 2 million extra of the chips they use in te iphone.
