I love everything that comes out of Steve's mouth. Android is now known as the Porn phone. Nice jab!

A jab perhaps but it'll be the phone all the kids want now.

I understand their stance on it but it's really pretty simple to control. Every time you access the adult store on itunes (including books, games, movies, comics), you'd be asked to input the username/password of an itunes account with a valid credit card.

If parents are letting their kids buy things on itunes with their cards then it's their own fault first of all but the itunes account could have a setting to allow access to adult material and it would be off by default.

AdMob's biggest asset was the exploding iPhone app ad market, all those little banners in free iPhone apps. So it was natural that Apple approach them, but they certainly don't need them.

However Quattro is a much bigger/more reputable ad company, with a broader base of advertising platforms.

I think they ultimately suckered Google with hype about their interest in AdMob. Google severely overpayed, and Apple got a comparative bargain on the more valuable, better competitor. Regardless of the initial reason, it was well played.

Really?? There is a difference between having a unregulated porn STORE and having access to adult content via a web browser. Apple is doing something about it. Get real.

Head scratching on that one - why fall for the iPad OS update? Is it to keep it clear of the various international iPad roll-outs or what?

In another story I was amused to note that the iPhone v4 will now support (a) flash (bulb).

... and what typeface did they use in the presentation? Myriad - AGAIN? When will Steve support Helvetica Neue Light in their presentations - GET IT TOGETHER APPLE!

Still my favorite apple news site though.

You think kids want a "porn store"?

There's this thing called the internet, as far as I know, it's entire existence is fueled primarily by free porn. If 15 year old Johnny Hairypalms is downloading illegal MP3s, he certainly won't be shelling out for adult content. All he needs is Safari.

You know, with porn accessible through safari for anyone who really wants to go there, I really admire Apple's stance. To be honest, I am sick and damn tired of porn being prevalent in society as much as it is. I really respect the lack of porn apps, and I commend Apple for taking a hard stance on the issue.

Hard stance was not intend as a pun.

    That is all.

Apple will not associate its brand prestige with mindless porn smut.

    Nuff said.

Is it really going to be on all currently selling Touch models? I thought the $200 Touch was using the older chip from the iPhone 3G, where the more expensive models are using 3GS processor.

Because of their different focus, it would seem that AdMob is the one for Apple to buy, not Quattro.

The problem is that it's an empty gesture unless there is a way to block porn web sites, hopefully one that's better than just blocking ALL web sites.

Porn has always been prevalent in society, and will continue as long as people have private parts. Humping like breathing and eating are kinda essential, it's our ridiculous taboos that complicate the matter. Better kids find out about porn on the internet, before they try cramming a goat somewhere that might do permanent damage. Just like 1st person shooter games teach you not to throw grenades or use bazookas in confined areas.

    My feelings are torn...

On one hand, porn is generally tech prevalent, but low in technical sophistication.

On the other hand, if a company was to make technology and porn a happy marriage , then Apple would be the first company you'd want for the job. All that sleek industrial design. Can you imagine getting an Android device near your genitalia? Sensitive things getting scratched or caught by flimsy plastic battery hatches and extraneous port covers. Let's not even go into detail about the viruses from a Windows mobile device.

You haven't heard of parental controls have you. It's in the settings.

It disables safari. Other apps can do more nuanced Safari restrictions too.

If there's "explicit" content on the store - what do I care - let the Quakers have their parental controls enabled as long as it doesn't prevent the rest of us from getting it - who cares. Oh right, open source software is the only "right" software in the universe and everyone should give Richard Stallman blowjobs. Whatever.

...and in other news... Gravity is STILL in FULL effect, film at 11.

I keep seeing these flash vs html5 articles all over the place. The hardware math APIs announced today open up another perspective in this battle. One thing a lot of people don't think about when considering web content performance is hardware support.

One of the key reasons HTML5 can be so snappy & rich on iPhone 4 is probably because there are certain optimizations in the hardware to support it. When companies agree on standards this means that hardware makers can then have some confidence in what type of content will typically be accessed on a device. This can also be applied to web.

This is huge because they can then invest money in engineering that optimizes the hardware for the software it is running! With a set of web standards they don't have to keep guessing at what technologies to target. This is already seen in practice both in the realms of 3D gaming & in video hardware decoding. All video chipsets these days have special optimizations that dramatically improve their performance for Direct3D and OpenGL & even include additional optimizations for decoding the primary video formats used these days.

The true power of standards isn't in cross-platform compatibility but in how it brings hardware & software developers together to optimize systems for the best possible performance. HTML5 is bringing new possibilities to this in cross-paltform though because of the movement towards cloud computing & web based apps. This means that not only are the web standards resolving the guessing game for hardware manufacturers but it is also expanding the type of focus they can have! Companies like NVidia could market whole chip designs around bringing you the web faster than the competition. Shucks, even network chipset makers could get in on that market. Hardware optimization is a huge factor in performance and is probably most often the reason for performance differences than software optimization.

I think people are blind if they still think HTML5 has no chance to replace flash. It may not replace flash anytime soon, certainly possible, but if you don't take that possibility seriously...well....

May be true. However, I believe SJ is saying the Apple's App Store, you know, the one branded APPLE, the one that draws revenue for APPLE, is not in the business of serving porn.

Since all apps for iPod Touch/iPhone goes through the App Store, he's simply saying that Apple doesn't want to get into the porn business by allowing unsigned apps.

Apple doesn't make money from the porn you view through Safari on the iPhone. It DOES make money from the sale of apps in THEIR App Store.

They were nobody before the iPhone, and I'm not sure if they have any real inroads into other platforms yet. They only came to prevalence because of free iPhone apps and developers looking to offer free content and still make a few bucks.

You could be right, but I'm guessing there's nothing particularly special about AdMob beyond iPhone apps. We're talking about a image file with a hyperlink and a cookie in an AdMob ad. Now developers have a potentially slicker service built into the development UI.

Quattro was the biggest mobile ad company and they did it without the iPhone, on talent alone - probably a better buy.

Not sure if you got the intent from my post... I was in no way (shape, nor form) questioning why flash doesn't exist on Apples mobile devices... I have no love for the poorly written plugin and as a Mac user why would I? Adobe hasn't proven it can write an acceptable FLASH plugin for "OS X" why on earth should Apple allow the garbage propagate any further, especially if it's in a position to stop it.

No, no, no - that's why Safari on the iPhone doesn't have flash - all the porn sites use flash
