$999 US is about 691 pounds UK at today's rate. Add VAT and you get 812 pounds.
There's a slight premium, but not very much. Given that it costs considerably more to do business in the UK than in the US, that's not surprising. If you want to look at UK prices vs. the US, try comparing car prices some time.
I really wish people would stop this nonsense about Apple ripping people off overseas. Jobs got it right when he told someone to learn something about finance before spouting off about how unfair Apple's prices are overseas.

If there is an Apple UK, it probably needs an income too. Does anyone know whether the local office is funded from local sales or whether funding is simply from a big pot?
So the new MB starts out $200 less than a 13" MBP. By the time you put 4 GB of RAM in the MB, it'll be only $100 cheaper. By spending just $100 more for the MBP, you get firewire, an SD card slot, aluminum enclosure, and backlit keyboard. In all seriousness, considering the minute difference in price, why would anyone buy a MacBook over the low-end 13" MacBook Pro?

Well, for average users, 2GB RAM is enough. If you have no firewire gear and don't plan on purchasing any, no SD cards and don't run heavy RAM-hungry applications, the MacBook is just fine.
I know it's mainly because of legal reasons but... it sucks to still see Core 2 Duo's in even machines labelled as "Pro". Gives the Apple haters new mud to throw with... Just leave out the optical drive and make room for a discrete graphics chip, Apple

Fair enough... but even if you don't have firewire equipment, target disk mode through firewire to another Mac is an invaluable tool, I've found. That feature, alone, is enough to push me away from the MacBook, unfortunately. Guess I'll be getting a 13" MBP for my fiancee.
The dollar has gained on the Euro and other currencies due to the economic crisis in Greece. Which means dollars are worth more slightly than they have for several years.

People who don't know about computer specs and are attracted to the soothing white ceramic looks of the case.
The 10 hr battery life is a bunch of crap. Just got the 10 hr macbook pro and see maybe about 7 or 8 at the most with not too much running in the background and screen turned down.
I get the UK price (minus VAT) to work out as $1035 using this morning's exchange rate of 1.4483 GBP/USD. Not a whole lot different than the US price of $999.
Frankly if you're an Apple fan in the UK you are a masochist. Apple's comedy UK pricing is little better than swapping the $ sign for a £ sign.
You do realize that there is a crisis in Europe that has affected the Euro and the Pound Sterling. Considering that the price also already included the VAT, that is actually comparable to the US prices. If you are a student, or connected with an educational institution, you get further discount.
When I was there, I understand your electricity system is slightly different from the US standard. So, I am not sure if the have to make a slight modification. That will add manufacturing cost to a much smaller market compared to the US, if they did something like that I believe Steve Jobs also sent an email to someone that there are regulatory issues, and additional taxes levied on certain Apple products. In the case of the response letter of Steve Jobs, it concerned the iPad and its much higher price in of the European countries. I am not sure if similar taxes are levied also on Apple computers in the UK.
Of course, there are much much cheaper alternatives, if it suits you.

Most reviewers are getting battery life on the MBP which is very impressive - comparable to Apple's claims. The iPad reviews also claim that battery life is equal to or better than Apple's claims. No reason to think that the MacBook will be different.
The point is that using similar test procedures, the MBP battery far outlasts standard batteries on any other computer. Maybe if you stay away from Flash web sites....

USB2 can do the target disk now with snow leopard
even less reason to have firewire
the constant flow ,rate with multiple devices becomes less significant with the impending USB3

If you are a student, you get more discount, and possibly a free iPod Touch? (if they keep the program) if you buy the computer during the back to school (July to September) period.
The 13" MBP gives you an aluminium unibody, backlit keyboard, FW800 port and SD card slot and 4GB RAM w/an 8GB max instead of 2/4. I think they could have dropped the price of the Macbook by $100 given how slight the changes were, but didn't expect it really.

Not for the average MacBook user.

Since Apple is using Intel chipsets, they won't have USB3 until Intel delivers - and there's no time frame on that.
