What do you believe will be the marquee feature in iOS 6 then? In other words, what is the compelling software reason to upgrade hardware?
My perspective is that iOS 6 may push new Maps to all users but some features such as 3D may be limited to the new iPhone (6th generation).
I apologize to anyone who believes my immediately preceding post is too long. I thought that encapsulating all the related events over the last few years was an interesting and worthwhile exercise since so many are focusing on a single aspect of the possible solution.
Apologize...
That was an excellent post: on point, well researched, concise, complete, citations... it is a pleasure to read a post (or an article) as well prepared and presented as yours!
If it doesn't have an offline map database it will be nothing special. There are plenty of people who need this feature. Apple needs to catch up with Nokia on this one.

You do realize the 3D Maps feature in Nokia Maps is provided by Apple (formerly C3 Technologies)? In fact, the 3D Nokia Maps haven't been updated in more than one year and didn't contain most of the available data at the time. Apple had mapped more than 100 cities more than one year ago so who knows how many cities have been mapped now.
I highly recommend you read this post (though a bit self-serving) to appreciate what Apple may be able to achieve.
I am very excited, been waiting a long time for this ...
Why, it's just a map program. What's there to get excited about. Ooooh 3D buildings, yawn, if the program can show me the nearest bus stop I'm happy. Oh wait, there's already map programs that do that., sorry but next. Apple is to little to late, there is nothing short of live sat video that could be more impressive then what is already available on the market.
Is Apple going to outfit hundreds of vehicles around the world like Google has to map the streets in full 360 view? I doubt it, I'm sure the software will be intuitive and pretty but there is no way that they'll have better information then Google has. Google has been collecting data for the last 7 years for their map info, Apple just now started. That is unless Apple is leasing the info from Google.

Here ... Let me join you under the bridge. (sits down ... explains as though speaking to a 3 year old).

PS - note to AppleInsider ... could you at least make the smileys work again? Your shiny new site is always half broken if you run a secure browser. It adds nothing the old one didn't already have and takes a bunch of stuff away.

Ding Ding! We have a winner! :-) (hand inserted smily)

Nokia does not use Apple's mapping service, where did you hear that from. Nokia Maps is a different entity and they have teamed up with Bing Maps now to have better coverage. Please don't make stuff up. Apple as of of yet has not shared their mapping data with anyone.
I've grown accustomed to my head where it is, thankyouverymuch, but I would like maps that are cache-able, if only regionally.
I was thinking of something along those lines earlier today but I wasn't setting the bar so high. I was hoping for a caching of a route after it's been made. I have Tom Tom but I know plenty of people that will create a route and then take screenshots of the text directions and step-by-step maps if they think they'll be going into a no-data zone.

If only there was some engine to which to search for "Nokia," "maps" and "C3 Technologies. (missing my rolleyes emoticon)
I'm just seeing that Apple paid $267 million for C3 Technologies. For Apple that's a very expensive acquisition. I wonder how much they paid for their other mapping purchases. I can't wait to find out what they did with all these technologies. I can wait to hear people say Apple is just copying Nokia blah blah blah when it's not likely Apple's solution will be as limited as Nokia's implementation.
That is what I was thinking. I would guess they would need approximately 30 million in the first quarter the new iPhone (6th generation) ships.
If the IPad (3) is any indication of things to come Apple will want to have plenty finished products on hand again. I know there is talk of iPads being sold out now that most countries are getting them but that first week of sales my local Apple Store was packed to the brim with all models.
For the 2013 iPad it might not even be needed as the drop to 32nm should reduce power use (and heat) to allow for an increased battery and/or a lighter and thinner device and/or increased performance even if the GPU can't move to Rogue just yet.

First, screw you, second, I don't care how spectacular Apple's mapping software is. Can I open up a browser and just type "give me directions from point a to point b", no, because Apple doesn't have a search engine. So it's a big bucket of failure. I am not going to use another mapping program when I can have my directions so much faster by typing it in my browse then playing with some program. My BMW also has a built in voice activated Nav unit that I can ask to give me directions. The iPhone is way to small to stare at in the car and the iPad is way to big hold while driving. There is absolutely nothing Apple can bring to the table that will change anything. I'm sure it's pretty and has amazing graphics with spinning globes and all the hoopla but at the end of the day it wont provide me with better directions then what I'm currently getting from Google or my sat unit. I'm sure my children will use it for their geography homework though. So keep your links to your self, especially when I cant see it for myself yet and it's just some article declaring how great it is.

Yes, that is why Nokia is now going with Bing and Apple only bought the company in 2011, they didn't create it. The newest release of Nokia Drive no longer uses C3 with Maps to follow.

Perhaps that's the response they wanted. Who knows.
I know it's horrible right. I cant even use my iPad on it properly.

Informative post. I appreciated it greatly.
Is that ready for mass production? I was thinking that couldn't be until the 4th gen iPad, at the earliest, and more likely the 7th gen iPhone.

Go here
Notice the "C3 Technologies" acknowledgement on the lower left?
Climbs out of the muck and mire underneath your smelly bridge.

Interviewer: "So there will be an Android version...?"
No there won't! lol

I've seen that link somewhere before . . .
;-)
(And I too appreciated it the first time. Nice compilation.)

You mean something that has a conversational interface with semantic analysis and context awareness? Wow. Wouldn't that be neat!
