There is a huge price and design differences between the 15" MBP and the new MBP. Just like there is a huge difference between the Air and the 13" MBP.

Isn't that just the basic config? There might be an option for more storage?

They've just killed their old 15". Why did they bother updating it at all?!

Exactly what I was thinking.  My gf is in the market for a new laptop.  I've convinced her to give Mac a try.  She likes using my iMac.  So I thought it'd be nice to hold off on a new MBA or MBP till the refresh.  I wanted a better screen.  She needs solid resolution because she's coming down from a huge 17 incher....

At these prices even the 15incher will be unaffordable.  Might have to go back to shopping for a Windows machine....

I mean in pre-mba/ultrabook era this kind of thickness was a norm for laptops.

For the power it is extremely thin. 1.8 *inches* used to be quite common for notebook computers except for ultralights. 1.8cm is pretty thin for standard notebook power. With quad core? That's pretty mindblowing combination of compactness and performance.

My Dell Studio 17" from last year is like 1.5" with the extended battery, which doesn't last 5 hours, never mind 7.

I know, and that doesn't bother me very much. But my mother is fretting now because all she wanted was a 13" plain-and-simple Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro and then this comes out and put her in a tizzy.

What bothers me is the 64GB in the base MacBook Air still. I mean, come on, Apple.

You want to take over the ENTIRE ultrabook market (that you defined and created, etc.)? 128GB base. MINIMUM.

no more 17" MBP and they need something that tops out in the $3000 fully loaded range. This is it. i'm guessing a lot of hardcore gamers will dump the silly alien laptops and jump on the Apple bandwagon. and if they use android its a chance to convert them to iOS users

i don't even think they care about making a big profit off this. its probably meant to feed them new customers for iOS

    * That may be enough for non gamers.  People playing with videos and photos can add a cheap USB 3.0 external drive for extra storage.

    * BTW I really loved the build in HDMI on the new macbook, going to get an HDMI external monitor and its going to be easy to plug the mac into TV'S

    * GT 650M.  I can't find any benmarks on it.  If someone finds one please link it

I don't think Apple made this new mbp for your typical consumer. It's a professional notebook made for pros. They highlighted final cut x for a reason...

    Excellent point.

Apple's being a little chintzy there.

At least they stopped embarrassing themselves by putting 2GB of RAM in the base Air.

I doubt Apple sells many regular macbook pros, except for the base model.

Lol, no it wasn't. The thinnerst laptop with discrete graphics has been the old MacBook pro. You are just making things up.

The entire list of apps getting ready for this was aimed at pros.

The price is also not consumer oriented.

Gotta figure out how I can afford one.

Me thinks Sony, HP, Samsung, Dell (etc) are all watching this and very nervously running back to the drawing board yelling, "Oh S***, what we gonna do now?!"

What most people seem to be missing is that as a retina display it will be used to make normal sized images sharper, not everything four times smaller. As a result, windows manufacturers don't have an easy recourse to copy the display because windows isn't resolution independent.

I thought 64GB was too low last year. Regarding new 15" laptops, yawn. They're hyping them quite a lot. I might change my mind when I see the new displays up close. I was kind of hoping they'd ditch the trend of shipping gpus with their lowest supported vram configuration. I'm also puzzled by the fact that they went back to NVidia. AMD has a lot of Windows driver issues that don't make it to OSX. While they're not always perfectly optimized, they seem to do okay. Also I'd like to how much it costs fully loaded. It would also be interesting to know who owns the display technology, like if they're using oemed panels or coming up with their own configuration. I'd also like to see if early problems arise.

Shockingly aggressive price!   This laptop will be hard to resist this year.    Hopefully we will get details real quick on the storage method / upgradability.

So completely sold. Time to update my three year old MacBook Pro, which is starting to really show its age when I work. An upgrade for the 512 GB SSD and a browse over any other tiered features and this baby's on its way to my house. I haven't been able to think of anything I dislike about this new laptop.

Nonexistent*, like the MacBook Air, I'm guessing.
