Whenever I buy things Apple (and I do that relatively often) I feel that the price is high. Whenever I compare my choices with the people that does not buy Apple things, I feel that I did the right thing.
My call: My 2009 MB Pro will continue to be my main computer, but will probably buy a 13" MB Air ... I was expecting for a 15" MB Air, it seems is not coming ...
The new macbook pro is the 15" Air. no CD, SSD and ultra thin...
"The next-generation MacBook Pro starts at $2,199 for the 15.4-inch model." Whoops. I am far from poor, but this is WAY out of my price range for a laptop--no matter how cool it is.
Back in 2008 I paid more than that for my MBP which wasn't anywhere near as technologically advanced as this one. This is actually a pretty aggressive price if you consider those technologies. Consider:

I cannot judge if this is too much or not... there is no competitor that could offer similar product.
But I think 1199 USD for basic 13" MBP is totally overpriced. They should wake up soon. Their hw may be slightly above average, but their prices are definetily premium.
Me thinks Sony, HP, Samsung, Dell (etc) are all watching this and very nervously running back to the drawing board yelling, "Oh S***, what we gonna do now?!"
They'll run to Microsoft and say, "what do we do now? Pleeeease tell us what to do, master."
I do get it. Of course, a Mac's GPU can double the resolution. Now everything will be the same size as it always has been.
But, making 1 pixel become 4 pixels has done nothing since the ORIGINAL still has the same resolution. You do not get more of anything. All Apple has done is make each of the 4 pixels smaller. One fourth the size. But, since the pixel couldn't be seen before, making it more invisible does nothing for the user. Nothing! You've been had. Nothing has been improved -- Apple simply gets to claim a higher resolution.
They said Adobe was working on Photoshop. Is it shipping? NO! Up-scaling all the current applications only makes them look more fuzzy. UPscaling always reduces quality!
An iPhone or iPad is different because of the tiny screen that you can hold it too close and -- some say see pixels. Hell, you'll see pixels on any device if you stick your nose against the screen. So Retina is a joke that does nothing because you can't make something better by zooming it up. Jut pull your nose back a few inches.
The real key is bigger screen. A new 17" is what's need for pro work.
Why did you register to make yourself look stupid? You clearly don't understand what is going on with these new macs.
my question also; I did not notice anything about a 13" macbook pro with retina; I know quite a few of us were waiting for such a product; anyone have any info? thanks
Not sure if I will I own one of these next month, or a year from now, but I *will* own one. It's hard to think of a feature one might want in a laptop that's not available, here. WOW!

That's what you get for letting AppleInsider and the rumor mill shape your view of reality... Welcome to the real reality.
Exactly what I was thinking. My gf is in the market for a new laptop. I've convinced her to give Mac a try. She likes using my iMac. So I thought it'd be nice to hold off on a new MBA or MBP till the refresh. I wanted a better screen. She needs solid resolution because she's coming down from a huge 17 incher....
At these prices even the 15incher will be unaffordable. Might have to go back to shopping for a Windows machine....
You can go back shopping for three competent Win machines at that price point...
No, actually, I own a 13" and a 15" MBP and a Mini, an iPad and an iPod Touch. I teach classes on using Mac software, so I am aware of what my students can afford. $1799 was already a high entry point for a 15" laptop. $2199 is out of reach for a lot of people who don't live in silicon valley and live on real incomes instead of adding the cost of a new laptop to their student debt.
A 3 grand laptop in the middle of a worldwide economic crisis - I don't the PC makers are going to be losing too much sleep tonight.
How is $2199 = 3 grand?
As to the price if one can afford $1800 one can afford $2200. Especially in the context of the new machine offering up so much technology. These are not half baked machine built out of left over parts from some asian jobber they are very much bleeding edge machines.

State of the art display.
Two TB ports and a good GPU.
A very capable SSD.
Large and proven battery technology.
A fairly fast CPU
All in all not bad for the price.
release date???? Sometime in July??? Please tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need one now!!!!!!

So is the memory upgradeable as on previous MBPs or soldered in as on Air?
It is kind of hard to see from this:

Except "Available today" was the highlight.

I guess if you have no concept of economics then $2,199 certainly rounds up to $3,000.
