They should make the keyboard a separate product.  Only buy if you need it.

People will buy an iPad before spending more for a MS tablet.

The high end may work for office people as my clients want smaller/lighter laptops. $399 / $699 and they may be able to get some traction with the masses.

It is do or die time for Microsoft so they better get it right.  It looks like they are passing over the masses for business oriented people and that will hurt them.

Apple says "Look what we have, come get one."

Microsoft says "Look what we are promising you, uh, watch for it, coming soon, er, sometime, we promise."

Do those  keyboards have a multitouch trackpad?

Bingo. This thing has to have a base price CHEAPER than $499, otherwise it's DOA, regardless of the specs of either model.

I'll buy one.  Looks like MS did a good job with this one.

The difference is that OSX would be horrible using a touchpad, while Windows8 has touchpad capability built in.

    Wow.  Pretty underwhelming.

The thing is uglier than Android devices,

    Thicker than them too,

    Runs Windows newer mobile OS.

I don't think they should have called it "Surface" since that was their camera based tech demo/casino table.  this is simply a touch screen device.

The single great thing about this device isn't the device.  It's the Applesque Smart Cover, which I have to say, is an excellent idea.

So, in other words, another "meh" tablet has been introduced.

This tablet will be the "Zune" of the tablet industry.

Microsft tried to be Apple before, owning the hardware and software, but ultimately they did and will continue to miss the mark, simply because they aren't truly offering a tailored experience.  They are only competing with their partners.

They use the same "one size fits all" OS on mobile.  then they create their own generic hardware to run it on.

The only real news is the addition of a neat accessory to the world - the tablet cover with keyboard.

    Very Microsoft-ish.

Hard to see it staying alive.

There is one thing this can do to try to have one thing better than the iPad - alternate mouse input.  Lots of people want that in the iPad and Apple ignores them.  If MS includes that, it will win over some on that basis alone - as ridiculous as that is.

Gotta love the Windows 8 Pro Surface - it's a fully working computer that can run desktop Windows apps, and best of all, it has a fully working Internet (supports Flash and e.g. Unity3D plugin). My iPad 2 just became an obsolete toy.

Microsoft is copying Apple, as well as themselves. Thanks for the picture that confirms that.

For a second I thought you were being serious about whatever it was you said.

Heh you Apple fanatics are really a breed of your own. :) This reminds me of the days of Amiga vs PC... So, tell me mr. fanboy, what real work can you do with your iPad 1/2/3? Taking notes and flipping photos doesn't count. That Win 8 Pro Surface is really a laptop and a tablet all in one.

A small multitouch trackpad to complement a multitouch screen just seems ... ambivalent. It seems lacking in conviction and vision.

How about editing photographs, editing movies (iMovie is pretty slick on iPad), drawing/painiting and otherwise creating art, writing/editing music, creating presentations, programming, website development,  ...

But the Surface is a non existent product.  All we have are M$ promises and they have a long history of promises that somehow have not met the hype.  Come on back a year after launch and then compare apples to apples.

We don't use that here. Please refrain from calling people it in the future.

Compared to the 0 (COUNT THEM. That's a zero with infinity zeroes after it) apps on the Microsoft tablet.
That Win 8 Pro Surface is really a laptop and a tablet all in one.

Try gloating when it actually exists. Or perhaps when a single application that works on it exists.

From the bottom of Microsoft's page about the Surface....

"Images are design renderings and not photographs."

All hype or a reality?  You decide.

No. The iPad doesn't need one because it has no on-screen cursor. Unlike the laptop with a detachable keyboard Microsoft proudly trotted out on stage as a "tablet."

Hey, now. Not all Finns are Nokia employees, but I imagine a fair few are being affected by the problems they're having.

Reminds me of the days when PC fans would claim the Mac can't do "real work" because the all the productivity programs ran on DOS. Nobody would use a Mac except for printing pretty fonts.

You can't hate the original while putting the knock-off on a pedestal. If that doesn't smack of "fanboyism," nothing else does.

Hmm. I work for a fortune 50 company and most of out executives have iPads. And we've developed financial dashboards/scorecards apps for them. Just the other day when working from home my work laptop crashed while I was on a WebEx. I pulled out my iPad, logged on to Good, pulled up the meeting invite with the WebEx link and in less than a minute I was back on my WebEx on my iPad. Not connected to the company network at alI. I keep hearing about how corporate CIO's are waiting for Windows tablets because of Exchange and Office. But my company is just starting to upgrade to Windows 7 and Office 2010. I can't see them jumping on the Windows 8 bandwagon that quickly. Heck even Michael Dell admitted this on Dell's last earnings call.

Exactly. I work for A Big Tech Company (coff IBM coff) and you would not believe the push towards Apple internally. Huge base of fans among employees. BYOD is the new game in town. Windows laptops are still the base offering internally, but the IT resources are flowing towards mobile first (both iOS and Android are first class citizens), and increasingly Mac. Not to mention Cloud.

The old Enterprises are wedded to Microsoft shibboleth is rapidly changing.
