Not if you know about time pieces. Everyone knows Rolex because they advertise heavily but there are plenty of better built watches and some are even less expensive than a Rolex.
Admittedly, I'm no expert on time pieces. But I don't have to be to understand what he's saying. Which is the iPhone is in its own league - I agree 100%.
It doesn't matter if the merits of Rolex and Timex aren't up to the same standards as iPhone and everyone else. What matters is that you understand the point he's trying to make and everyone does.
Munster is like Jim Cramer, neither of them knows much about tech, and only tries to drive up the price of what ever stock that they are getting a kickback from.
Had he said Mercedes-Benz instead of Rolex all the car enthusiasts would've been arguing the same point. I understand why he used Rolex because it'll be more understood by the general public but for us horologists it's a joke.
I don't understand why people that read about watch makers call themselves horologists. You aren't studying time, you're studying timepieces. When I read about sports I don't call myself an athlete. It's very different to know the stats and history of players and teams, then how to be one. Horologists are the people that build the timepieces to be so exact with the time, not the people who drool over a glossy photo of a $300,000 watch in Forbes magazine.
So you think the quote would be better if Munster researched what he thought was the very best watch maker, bar none, and used some obscure name that no one had heard of? How does using unreliable names that need to be researched by all buy the very few and explained to nearly everyone make a quote better?
"Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray said while the iPhone 5 is like an IWC, many competing phones "feel more like cheaper Huangpu-brand watches."
Everybody that listens to Jay-Z knows about Audemars Piguet and Baume & Mercier lol. But you're correct his quote will make more sense to most people.
you guys who criticize his Rolex analogy are missing the point so badly I am amazed at you stupidity. Really its an analogy based on the fact that a rolex is a standard. Yes of course there are better watches out there but that is not the point Stop being so damned anal jeez, Can't you do any better than this, you are really slipping ROFL
What if a watch analyst said something like this... The Rolex Submariner praised as 'a Windows Lumia among a sea of Androids'. Would you chime in with your two cents worth?
Damn, now what do I do? I own a porsche and two homes, but the only Rolex I've owned is a $10 knockoff I bought from a street vendor in Beijing. There's always a cheap timex ironman on my wrist.
I'm waiting for apple to bring out a BT-equipped smaller nano before wearing anything different. The just-abandoned little nano is fine for strapping on to listen to radio play-by-play at nfl games, but it needs some tinkering before it can (and should) become an every day watch.

Horology is the study of the art or science of time measurement. Is calling a timepiece enthusiast a horologist overkill? Probably but most are elitist, self serving mofos that need to feel important.
I hate it when anyone says the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 is not a new design. The look is not design. The look is style or appearance. The design is on the inside, where it all comes together.

That's like saying that everyone who watches NASCAR races is a racist... wait, that one got away from me. :D
Come on even apple fans liked what nokia presented with the 920. I think this shows how biased this person really is. I have an iphone 4s and just a screen size change will not make me switch.

You're correct but not many people see the inside and if they did most wouldn't know what they're looking at.

I'd argue that the exterior components for look, feel and functionality are also designed.

Nevermind the fact the iPhone 5 is more than a screen size change, what would make you switch?

And plenty of watches have been released that are better than a Rolex which is why the analogy doesn't work.
