Apple 'leaving money on the table' by not releasing big-screen iPhone

Amateur hour at AppleInsider. First you open with "Calls for Apple to make an iPhone with a larger display around 5 inches diagonally are growing among investors, who see a big-screen iPhone as a major revenue opportunity." Then you go on to quote a bunch of analysts like Shaw Wu.

I guess in AppleInsider's world, analysts = "investors" just as DigiTimes = "sources close to the company."

You may not be alone, but I also don't think you're representative of the general public. Chasing niches is not what Apple needs to do.

Apple has explained why they went for the 4” display, it’s the biggest they could go and still maintain one handed operation.

Now, seriously, would you have a problem if Apple release a bigger screen iPhone alongside the current 4"? what is your problem with that? Millions and Millions of people per quarter are buying 4.5" phones just because of the screen size, while losing performance, screen quality, etc... and paying the same.

There's a bigger display, and there is ridiculous. A nice sized screen that more easily readable would be nice. Having a phablet next to my ear is just dumb. The iphone could grow just a little bit and still be very sleek and usable.

My hope/guess is that Apple will ignore these "calls". If investors aren't happy, they can sell.

You forgot the foldable screen and laser keyboard in iPhone 5s.

winstein2010, I agree Apple could do that but why should they? The iPad mini is still too large to fit in people's pockets, which I bet is the primary location people carry them. I have no idea where people carry those huge Android phones or phablet (stupid name). Of course, those analysts probably wear suits (never trust suits) so they can carry them in their coat pockets.

People have to get past this idea that it has to fit in a pocket. You do realize that approx. 50% of the population generally doesn't stuff things in pockets, right? What does matter is that its light and not enormous.

We also have to get over the 19th century idea that you have to hold the device to your head (which is a bad idea for a lot of reasons, driving and radiation being only 2.)

An iPad mini 'phone' with the bluetooth earphone that I already use 100% of the time, and I'm in.

Chasing niches is what they did most of their corporate career. Oh, wait... You must be a NEW Apple user. I've been using Apple products since 1982. The Mac was nothing but a niche product, and pretty much still is, though it's a great product none the less.

And, does anyone actually have any hard numbers on how many phablets have been sold, and where? Sold, not shipped.

At 230 million a year, he's arguing that phablets will become the norm in smartphone sales. Baseless conjecture.
I seriously doubt phablits will become the norm, I Love the size if my 4 inch Retna Display of my iPhone 5. It os the perfect size to fit in my hand!

There are several ways to wear  a phablet. You can carry it in a holster if you want to look even more ridiculous than wearing a fanny pack.

You can chain it around the neck. Heck, guys used to wear huge alarm clocks this way, why not a phone?

If you want a bigger phone the competition makes some. I personally prefer a phone that won't necessitate me having a bag/case to have it on me all day and that will fit in my front pocket.

I have my larger iPhone. It's called the iPad mini.

Make an option for phone features on all of their iPads and call them iPad Office.

Even better allow me to move my SIM card between devices so that if aI want a small phone I can take my regular iPhone with me but if I want a full size device then I can use a full size iPda or the iPad mini.

Phablets are becoming more popular, but I don't think they will be the biggest sellers.  I think Apple should always have two or three different sized iPhones, iPads, laptops, iMacs to give people a wider choice.

I'm still not sure 5inch is the ideal size.  I think it's a little too big. I personally think 4.5inch or somewhere around that size would be ideal for the larger screen as I would buy one.  i also think there are quite a few that prefer small smartphones because they want them to be easy to hold, take very little room in people's pockets or purses.  Plus different hand sizes and needs.

I think they would probably sell around 40 Million 4.5 inch iPhones in the first year, maybe a little more than that.  But the Samsung Note II still hasn't sold 10 Million units yet.  I think they sold around 8 Million units, which isn't that many.  But there are more and more models from different companies cropping up, but I don't think they are selling anywhere near the 4 inch model phones.

Personally, I think they should offer a voice/data chipset in ALL of their mobile devices and people can just get a BlueTooth earpiece.  It would be cool if we could get a voice/data capabilities in laptops, tablets, and smartphones and have them programmed to use the same phone number/account.  that way, we only have to pick which device we want to carry around and always have access to voice/data.  I could see that as something Apple should at least offer.  I don't think it would raise the price much more than maybe $150 for the voice/data chip, antenna system to be installed in a tablet/laptop.

What pains me is why Apple wasn't the FIRST to offer multiple sized iPhones? It used that very strategy with the iPod and it ran just about everyone else out of business. So why not the iPhone? Why can't I have a nice sized screen on an iPhone? Surely there is a HUGE market, being the Samsung Galaxy S3 has sold in massive numbers. As a matter of fact, most Android owners claim the iPhone's small size turned them OFF...
