Nice to see most people having such minor issues with Maverics.  It's a complete POS as far as I am concerned.

    How about a jiggle?

Have you tried giving it a jiggle?

There's nothing like a good, hard jiggle.

You think it's "nice" people are having issues with a product.
I had no problems with ML.

So if I go back and look at your pre-Mavericks posts, around the time ML launched, you won't have made any negative comments about ML?

edit: Look at what I found after a nearly instant search.

I have an new MBP that came with 10.8. I wish I could install 10.7 on it, but it's not possible. Obviously I wouldn't upgrade if I were in your position.

I have read that 10.7 was optimised for performance and that 10.8 is a step back.

With great anticipation I configured my then recently purchased Macbook Pro Retina and the Touch, hooked the Touch to my HiFi and then set about streaming from the MBPR to the HiFi. What a great typical Apple experience that was. €2500 ($3,300) worth of Apple goodness and it didn't work.

It equally shows Apple's slack efforts at testing their products before putting them in the hands of users.

Anyone know why OSX (Mountain Lion + Leopard) won't connect to free WiFi services such as are offered in airports?

I was recently in Cork Airport. It offers free WiFi, but my Macbook Pro running ML failed to connect to it. Same Happened at Salzburg Airport.

In the case of Cork, It could 'see' the free Wifi and I selected it, but in the Menu bar, the WiFi symbol had an exclamation mark in it and a text warning that no ISP could be found - or words to that effect.

My son couldn't connect either on a Macbook unibody running Leopard. However, when he booted into linux, he had no problem connecting. My daughter could connect also using a Toshiba Laptop running Windows 7.

Two Samsung phones could connect also.

One gets a connection, but when you start a web browser, you don't get directed to the web page where you are granted the connection from. Even manually entering the address of the page like 1.1.1.1 doesn't work.

So 4 other OSs manage to connect, but two different versions of OSX can't.

I've been trying desperately to get on PhilBoogie's block list but it has a very strict dress code and I keep getting rejected.

However, I refuse to give up!

It's true it wouldn't be as flexible, but the iPad and iPad mini are the same size (or bigger) than a paperback novel anyway so it wouldn't be any worse than a real book. PDFs can have embedded web content for interactivity I just don't think the whole thing should be HTML. How many years has the web been around now and it still sucks from a typesetting perspective? All the centuries mankind spend perfecting the art of making beautiful books, should not all just thrown away upon the transition to the digital era.

Steve Jobs himself was a big fan of beautiful typesetting but supposedly this whole iBooks thing was done by Eddie Cue while Steve was on his death bed. If Steve had been feeling better I'm sure the product would have come out better: more beautiful books and less buggy apps.

And in portrait orientation? Just add horizontal black banding? Not to mention the very small fonts as a result. Nah, fix the .ePub / html I say.

In portrait just show one page, and in landscape 2 pages side by side.

But if they scan the books and turn them into .pdf it becomes a static 'picture', no? It then cannot scale, it cannot show 50% of the landscape view in portrait. I think; do I 'view' this wrong?

You can scan pages in to PDF pictures but I was thinking the text would be OCR'ed, Such PDFs can scale beautifully, just not paginate. Anyway I'm sure Apple won't change their technology platform at this late stage. Your suggestion of improving/evolving epub is probably what will happen, it's just a shame in my opinion that us early adopters get something not as great as it potentially could have been.

I wouldn't mind doing everything in the app itself, but please let me edit .pdf meta data. Purchased magazines where the publisher isn't consistent in naming convention I'd like to change, but can't. And we should be able to set the location for out media, just like iTunes. Now it's all sitting on my SSD, mandatory, and I really can read at the speed of 827MB/s.

    Hey Phil,

Have you tried using a hex-editor to modify the metadata? I had to do this to some podcasts that couldn't be modified in iTunes. I find Hex Fiend does the job.

How a bout really lousy performance of Preview app on RAW files??? Looks like Apple doesn't care but wants folks to buy Aperture app, instead! Ridiculous.

As a new Mac user (Mac Mini 2012) I've enjoyed OSX and Mavericks. I do find AirPlay to be glitchy as well as mirroring. Especially when multiple people are logged into the Mac. Sometimes the Mac will refuse to wake up after going to sleep and needs a reboot.

Lots of great features and a clean interface. I just don't conclude it was anymore reliable than a new Windows installation.

Mail works fine for me however.

I use something else for editing .pdf's, but a hex editor will also work. I'll have a gander at HF.

edit: wrong answer. What kind of Mac are you using? Maybe it needs upgrading.

I don't understand the inherent negativity.

"Take your false concern somewhere else." ???

I do like Apple, I earn a living working on that platform.

Mail on the Mac is still buggy for gmail.

And the new Pages/Numbers/Keynote apps are great, just a lot of undocumented things at product intro.

    Have a nice day!

The simple work around has been to forward your mail from Gmail to an iCloud account. You can also setup Gmail as an outgoing mail server so it's invisible to those you are responding to, unless they look at your raw headers to see the mail was forwarded to an iCloud IP address.

    Thanks SolipsismX,

I'll probably do this If the problem persists after 10.9.2

How have you got 'previews' set up? You may need to lower the size of preview to speed it up.

10.9.2 finally fixed the problem. Raw files open very fast! :p
