In Vancouver here. Samsung was a big sponsor when we had the Olympics here, and I'm pretty sure they were a big part of the London games as well.

Right, but you can't buy every competitor's loyalty by giving them a stupid phone.  Nike pays its people millions so it makes sense that they try not be caught dead wearing something else.  This is entirely different.

imo if given a Note 3 they should used it over the iphone.  The Note 3 record 4K videos and has a 13mp camera.

    hahahaha

nice one, thanks for the laugh.

[edit]  ok I'll be more specific with my reply.  Most of the tests I've seen don't indicate the Note 3 is any better than the iPhone at taking photos. Quite the contrary mostly (especially in lower light conditions). And 4k video? Really? 2 mins of 4k video is about 1GB in size. And there's no benefit to shooting in 4k at all if you have no 4k display to show it on. Not to mention the endless time spent waiting to transfer all those enormous files to make room for shooting more. Olympians on the go should do that, right...?

So yeah, I cracked up reading that...   thanks again! :)

EWW!!!  That's such an offensive suggestion.  Why would ANYONE put an Apple logo on that piece of feces???  It's like putting a Mercedes branding on a Ford.  That's just offensive!

    I saw a BMW logo glued onto a Lada once, and I wasn't offended, so I dunno! <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

And these days, I'm not seeing much difference between Ford and Benz quality. The Chrysler merger, and subsequent loss of half the Mercedes engineers (a big chunk of those going to Audi) sure put a dent in Mercedes Benz quality...

That said, I'd rather drive an Audi than a Ford.....! And I prefer my iPhone to the Note 3 for sure. The Note 3's 50% greater weight alone convinced me I'm not interested in the "phablet" phone factor.

By the way there's been an update from the OIC:  They're saying the athletes have no obligation to cover logos on their personal effects such as phones, and they can even have non-sponsor logos on their jackets, etc. so long as they are less than 10% of the total surface.

This is just a Samsung compliance requirement (nothing to do with OIC rules), tying the free gift to the "no-show" demand. If you WANT that free Note 3, then you have to cover or hide your Apple logos...

Stupid move, Samsung. More negative press than positive "perception" benefit, eh?

Or how about the atheletes leave their phones in their pockets and experience the once-in-a-lifetime moment first-hand?  This experience of recording everything and basically watching life in real-time through a little screen is bizarre.

It is weird until you go back later and try to remember what you saw and can't. I take it you have no family videos or video milestones.

It's not so much what was seen but what emotions were felt in the moment. There's a disconnect when one is too busy recording. There will be plenty of photos and videos on social media for one to relive it.

It's not that hard to take video. And who will be taking the photos and videos?

I was referring to the Olympians, obviously in a family situation it pays to record milestones, but there's going to be hundreds if not thousands of other Olympians recording the very same thing much of which will end up on YouTube, FB, and Twitter. I agree with malax, just take all in old school style.

A DED story turned out not to be true?  Color me shocked.

"It is possible that Samsung requested that logos be covered, but it is not an official IOC request"

That's not a debunking of what Samsung may have tried to pull off. Just that they were bluffing without IOC backing.

Please. It isn't at all "untrue".

You don't have to go far to see the repercussions the issue has already caused (for example, check out some responses from Swiss and German athletes, easily googled), having nothing to do with DED at all. So in fact, it was good reporting on his part.

The linked article brings an update and a clarification from the IOC.

This is what I call "a developing story"...

I heard that Samsung has to cover the time on their phones with an Omega sticker.*

*Well I never actually "heard" anything, more just made it up.

That would be much more annoying if you lacked a Visa branded card.
