Yeah the fingerprint scanner doesn't sound very good.  When I made my comment I hadn't read the Verge's report yet because your comment didn't appear on the page before I posted mine.

I was thinking more along the lines of the fast autofocus, real time HDR, download booster, and "ultra power saving mode."  Those all sound like features users can take advantage of relatively seamlessly.
Sure. And I won't jump to calling things gimmicky if they actually work. Problem with Samsung in the past is they add a bunch of new festures just to fill out a spec sheet and most of them don't work that well and people stop using them. Hopefully that's not the case with S5.

Very bad specs if confirmed: basically same perf of N5, six months later for double price.

It's like buying copper instead of gold and trying to satisfy yourself. People buy S5 instead of iPhone. There's a big difference :smokey: Poor people make poor choices and it's hard to beat that.

I hope that's something Apple will be doing soon too. A friend of mine did drop her iPhone 4 in the toilet and it still worked afterwards, but I know you can't count on that.

On second thought, maybe I wouldn't want to use my phone if that happened to it, anyway.

You know, the simple answer to that is to not drop it in the water. :)

The sad thing about this phone being so ugly is that it's also too big to hide it in your pocket so people don't laugh at you when they see you actually bought one.

That's where clowns like Samsung will always fail.  They add everything plus the kitchen sink, and nothing works well.  Apple takes its time to get it right, and make sure the tech is completely hidden from the user.  TouchID is elegant, simple, and best yet... it just works.

Samsung's fingerprint scanner is using old fingerprint scanning from the early 2000's, using hardware that is buggy, unreliable, and crappy system software to top it off.  They should be ashamed of themselves for coming out with such garbage.  This is what Samsung calls "innovation" when they can't copy off of Apple anymore.

When all the haters were criticizing Apple's TouchID, what they should (and better) be doing is directing that hate toward Samsung.
What I've been really surprised by is just how well touch id works for me. I come from a cold climate and my fingers are often dry and chaffed yet 90-95% of the time touch id reads my fingerprint perfectly first try. I could never go back to a phone that doesn't have it.

Switching the screen to black and white to save power is a brilliant idea.

They are not happy on Android forums either. Bad day for the big S.

A bigger iPhone line, together with the current 4", + new Sony devices + LG, + Chinese OEMs and this is the year that Samsung will go down. (by now, I mean having the same relevance as Asus).

    Very underwhelming release.

Water resistance is one thing I'd like to see Apple jump on board with. I lost a 3GS to the perils of the bathroom.

And tbh I'd stick my phone into black and white mode permanently if it made a significant improvement to battery.

It goes with the barometer which was added a few S's ago.

So how many sites will be reposting Samsung's press release with fawning devotion?

I guess it depends on Samsung's chequebook.

Agreed: wasn't a must have feature when it was announced (frankly I thought it was a bit of a gimmick) and yet I find it something I rely on now that I've used it for a while.

That's something that Apple should copy. In the meantime there's invert colors.

LOL. The orientation of the display on their Fit Gear Band or whatever it's called is completely wrong. It's almost unusable.

The excitement for Samsung flagship releases probably peaked with the S3. The hardware has made merely iterative improvements while the Touchwiz skin has gotten no less bloated.

Buy a case, I can swim with my iPhone if I want and take photo's  underwater.

I'm not putting my iPhone in a special complete-cover case to use it in every situation where there's even a slight water risk.

    No sir-ee.
