NT servers normally don't have the absolutely fastest bleeding-edge Intel processor either. More emphasis is placed on storage capacity/speed, lots of RAM capacity, fast networking, and STABILITY above all else.
I disagree. I bet the next 2 hours are going apple is going to show software and solutions to the press and when you see it and the prices in comparison to dell, ibm etc. you will see that they hit their target market dead on.
I mean 4mb L3 cache?!!!!
And you call him a pussy since they are 1.0 gig in stead of 1.2? Have you seend the expandablity specs and the hot swapping and monitoring of everything?
geeze this is a awesome box.

Yep, it IS an awesome box, no doubt about it, at all, ever...
But if the G4 can use DDR, they have not JUST found this out..IMHO it should have been on the last Powermacs...and why not put out the best CPUs you can? Everyone knows the PMs will updated in July so what's the problem?
Also...don't forget the software server side as well. Old' Shiller is spewing out a ton of supported networking standards and services (old news, but still)
I hope that memory ASIC is as efficient as the PowerMac's. 266MHz DDR isn't exactly top notch.
DO you think the PowerMacs in July might be even more up to date? Ie 333MHz and hopefully also a MHz bump... Or are we just getting 2MB extra L3 cache every 6 months now
I'd love to see 1.6 gigHz instead too but hey. does sun sell servers that just recently got to 1 ghz
I think this is a case where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole and I can't wait to see benchmarks with these asics 4mb L3 and new independent hd controllers.
I would think putting 1.2 Ghz chips in the Xserve would only make it priced righ tin the middle of everyone else's price points, and not gain much in the way od server performance.
I also think that PR has a much less important place in the server-enterprise market.
A custom ASIC is interesting as it might point towards rumours Apple have been designing the G5 or elements thereof, inhouse. It will be interesting to see how this ASIC performs in the Xserve withe the DDR .. c'mon, which spec is it?
And 4Mb DDR Level3 Cache?!? Well reports of the performance of the latest dual gig quicksilver were better than expected due in part to a 2Mb L3 cache, so that sounds tasty too!
OS X Server and Xserve provide ....SNIP...Management tools include Server Admin and Server Monitor, Unlimited clients (windows server requires expensive server licenses).
I hope they will do some very good advertising in the pc & unix world. This is the key.
Bodhi. You comments and attack on SJ are uncalled for. This is exactly the kind of comment that have given Appleinsider "the bottom of the barrel" award. You can show your displeasure without resorting to sophmoric and childish comments, can't you?
Let's hear from posters who have more to contribute on this subject as I would like to learn as much as possible. OK?
[quote] Where's the beef? The specs aren't that great.

Anyone want to find better hardware and software specs (including Unlimited server licnese (check out the cost for that at microsft.com and visual server monitor tools, and firewire) for an equal or lower price? any takers? huh?
I swear If apple had come out with a G6 1U some people would still find something to complain about.

HOLY COW! Cluster power! Sure these servers suck! *cough*
These specs are not bad at all. In the Wintel world most 1U servers have P3's running at 800MHz-1GHz with PC133. I know, we bought some recently. Also Servers are kept a lot longer than desktop machines. it's not uncommon to go in a server room and see many PentiumPro servers on NT4 or Sun Sparc servers on Solaris 2.6... Server hardware needs to be dependable above its need to be fast.
Considering we're all glued to MacCentral and feverishly clicking refresh....
I just find it amazing at times to think about technology. Somebody is sitting in Cupertino right now rapidly typing the words from Steve's mouth out on a laptop and we're here looking at the information within seconds of it being spoken...very cool. Bits are flowing, data is routing, 1's and 0's are giving as all the info we need...technology is great.

G-News
If the latter happens to be the case the DDR memory will mean nothing and bring absolutely no performance benefits.

Here's hoping for "one more thing..."

Like the sound of this...
