No, not at all like that in any way, shape or form. There is one person using the data: me. I am paying based on the amount of bandwidth I consume. Whether I browse on my phone or my laptop via my phone, the outcome is EXACTLY THE SAME. It's as irrelevant to the supplier as whether I eat with a fork or a spoon. Making me pay more for one of them is a completely artificial and indefensible construct.

It's exactly like that. You agreed to get a data plan for your phone, not so it can feed data to all your other devices.

They would find it impossible to enforce, so obviously not. However, what you refer to sounds similar to restaurants charging corkage fees for bringing your own bottles. And if you were in a smart restaurant and decided to start glugging wine from a bottle, the restaurant would be at liberty to ask you to use a glass or to throw you out. That's business.

I never said there is an obligation, of course there isn't. Any smartphone with radio chipset can do this. However, no sellers can legally say it can work on specific network without that specific agreement/certification process. If the carrier finds out you're using an uncertified phone, then they're legally allowed to disconnect you and force you to either get a certified phone or lose your services. You can buy one of those ripoffs for 20$, go ahead, but you're no longer entitled to the service even if you're playing for it since it's not certified to work with their network.

I know what you're saying and I agree but legally, the laws in US are on the carrier's side, not customers.

Look at Verizon and Nexus 7 recently, they intentionally disallowed anybody with Nexus 7 on the network even though by your statement, it shouldn't happen. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/09/verizon-blocks-nexus-7-and-will-probably-get-away-with-it/ (a bit outdated but it covers the gist of it).

In that case I feel terribly sorry for your US people. In all other parts of the world it is sufficient for a device to have the necessary general certifications and declarations (FCC, CE, 3GPP, etc.) in order to being allowed use on any operators network. Also there is no need to say it works on any specific network (except for an operator lock of course) because if it doesn't it cannot pass standard certification and thus may not be sold.

Funny enough the iPhone is just another device and not deemed any better or different than a $20 ripoff -- of course assuming that the vendor managed to get all the proper standard certifications.

Isn't the whole purpose of standards to let anyone make compatible equipment without having to deal with each vendor separately? The situation with mobile carriers is as absurd as if every computer's 802.11 wifi chip had to be tested and certified by each internet provider separately.

It's not as bad as it seems. Before the smartphone boom unlocked international phones were very popular.

I dont know what business of Apples it is.
To help people rob me. It makes no difference how you use your allotted data.

But what they have done is make sure I dont resign with sprint.

Anyone who dont have tethering free wont get my money.

I have a throw away phone 45 a month job that has free hotspot on it.
But not on my expensive iphone.
I hear there is a billionaire who is thinking of suing because if you cant load your own app you dont own the phone they do.
It should work just like Mavericks on IOS. and they are unfairly blocking competition with app store only. I think he stands a good chance to win a lot of money from Apple.

It is just a big rip off.

I only got this pile of crap for xmas.

    Well, it’s their contractual obligation.

You think that, and so do I, but we don’t matter.

I bought a 4G 3MB internet onto my phone like last week because i loved using the hotspot option on my phone to provide internet to my laptop,3ds,PSVita,PSP and every handheld i had. but last week my phone suddenly shut off by its self...i was wondering what the heck happen and i opened it up again, working fine, i opened up my hotspot option and BOOM! no Wifi option! i only see USB and Bluetooth. i was absolutely scared out of my life, spending 67 euros monthly on a fast internet and now its purpose is gone, in fear i updated to iOS 7.1....none of less i was dissapointed, still nothing! i tried changing the APN systems from cellur data and guess what? it appeared again. only for a day that is untill it shut off again and i was at waypoint 0... out of confusion i went on a websearch and i find this thread and i ask of you why wont it work for me? My mom and i use the same internet, same provider, same settings, same everything BUT ON HER PHONE, THE WIFI OPTION IS STILL THERE?! I'm absolutely terrified of why this happen, i tried going to the genius bar, they said the best thing is call your provider/carrier to enable wifi tethering, i called them and they said everything is fine and working! IM RUNNING OUT FROM IDEAS WHAT TO DO?! MY PROVIDER IS ACTUALLY GONNA DROP MY 4G OFF AND UPGRADE TO 2G SLOW INTERNET CUZ I DONT USE ENOUGH OF MY MONTHLY PACKAGE!

the last hope i will try this post, if no one can help, ima just jailbreak my iPhone 4s to backwards compare into iOS 7.0.4 or iOS 6...if that wont help, i'm switching to Nokia / Samsung / ITC because f--k you apple, i loved you but you ruined it

    thanks for the help btw.

Here's your help: Apple don't want you as a customer, and we don't want you here as a poster.

Does this package cover tethering or just data to your phone?

i was absolutely scared out of my life, spending 67 euros monthly on a fast internet and now its purpose is gone…

Then stop paying for the Internet. Sounds like a pretty simple solution.

I’m absolutely terrified of why this happen…

That’s the intent, I’d think. Don’t violate your contract.

IM RUNNING OUT FROM IDEAS WHAT TO DO?!

Sounds like you should pay for tethering instead of trying to breach your contract.

MY PROVIDER IS ACTUALLY GONNA DROP MY 4G OFF AND UPGRADE TO 2G SLOW INTERNET CUZ I DONT USE ENOUGH OF MY MONTHLY PACKAGE!

So, again, stop paying for that package.

Bye. Neither they nor we would care, I think. Learn how to read a contract.

Officaly add tethering to your contract by signing up for that service. Tethering is an option on many services and not a builtin feature.
