No, I am from Russia. For reference, the cheapest iPhone 5c (16 GB) is 610 dollars here.
In that case you have no excuse for thinking that Apple is pocketing hundreds of dollars more per unit and not understanding how import tariffs and other nation specific fees work.
I'm not missing the point, because I have already conducted the experiment, and I know the results.
I gave my mom an iPad 2 16 GB a few years ago, and even to this day, not even half of the capacity is filled up. An 8 GB iPhone would suit somebody like her perfectly.
There are people who don't download a lot of apps, and there are people who don't take photos or videos.
Yes you are correct. But boy, IMO that phone is pretty limited for growth/resale now. Hopefully Apple has this correct. I presume they should have the user data analytics(ie a lot info from people like your Mom) to back this up, thoughts?
I've always argued in favor of Apple jacking up their prices, in other to further separate themselves from the riff raff.
If somebody feels that the price of a particular Apple device is too expensive, then they are free to buy something else.
And the 4s is still available for those who are looking for something even cheaper.

I would assume that they have some sort of idea.
I don't think that anybody's claiming that this 8 GB phone will be a huge seller or the main model. It's the bottom option, and even if only a few percentage of people choose it, then perhaps that's good enough for Apple to justify offering it as an alternative option.

Considering that the 32 GB 5c in the US is $649, and the 16 GB is $549, let's logically assume that the 8 GB will be 449$.
$800 would mean that there's almost 80% of markup.
But if you look at some other phones, the math just does not check out.
Galaxy S5 is $700 in the US and $970 in Italy - that comes out to 40%.
HTC One M8 is the same in the US and a bit more expensive in Italy - $1000. But that still comes out to about 43%.

What kind of a 'bottom option' starts at 800 dollars??
Really, just let that number sink in - it is INSANE.

You say the math doesn't check out yet you haven't shown that you've done any math? Where is excluding any taxes, fees or conversation rate differences?

There's absolutely no way that could amount to making the phone cost 80% more. In Brazil, maybe, but this is Europe we are talking about here.

Your math is off, because Apple is not responsible for ridiculous VAT and other extra fees added on by various governments.
Blame the crappy governments for that, not Apple.
In certain countries, Apple products will always be much more expensive than elsewhere. Ask somebody in Brazil what they think of iPhone prices." src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Did I not put prices of some other phones for comparison?

Have you or have you not done the math! You said you did and I asked for the very basic proof and now you seem to be backpedaling on your adamant declaration that Apple is pocketing an additional 80%.

Did you see the bit about Samsung and HTC amounting to 40%?
Did I not put prices of some other phones for comparison?
What does that prove? Are you certain that those phones are built, at least in part in that country to help reduce import tariffs? I believe Apple and Foxconn opened up a factory in Brasil specifically to help reduce such costs.
I don't see what that has to do with anything. Apple is not competing with others on price.
Are iPhone imitations cheaper than the real deal? Yes they are.
Just put that Android hatred bullcrap aside for a moment and look at the numbers. The competition is marked up 40%. Apple is marked up 80%. They are the same type of devices and are taxed the same.

Apple’s, then.
So stop whining and don’t buy it. You’re in the minority.

Don't BUY an 8 GB phone.
Not terribly hard was it?
For a similar reason I don't buy minivans.
