    • May 1978 -- saw an Apple ][ at ComputerLand Los Altos, CA
    • Jun 1978 -- wife convinced me to buy [order] one for my Bday
    • Sep 1978 -- got my Apple ][ (I was 39 years old)
    • Dec 1978 -- with 2 others opened Computer Plus, Sunnyvale, CA -- an Apple reseller (with no inventory)
    • Jun 1979 -- Quit my 16 1/2 year career at IBM Palo Alto Systems Center (my boss said to take a few months to think about and kept me on the payroll for 6 months)

Like you, one of my early experiences was with a quadriplegic who, using a special device, could type into the Apple ][ by blowing into a tube ... inspiring!

Today, it's Proloquo2go on the iPad:

I was so impressed when I saw this app that I bought it -- though we have no need for it. It just seemed like something we should support.

Edit: Ha! AIR, you were in the UK, so you must remember a Dutch company -- Apple reseller, think, named Ronco or Aronco. Their logo was a robot rendered in HiRes Graphics on the Apple ][. Surfed for them with no luck.

    Sorry doesn't ring a a bell.

As a black man, hip hop lover and fellow Applephile,

STOP using the race card. That's a very sad way to influence a conversation or lend credibility to your opinions.

I am amazed at your ability to remember dates. I have no such capacity for that. Looking back I can easily be off by a decade or think something was just a couple months ago when it was a couple years.

    1) Your post didn't consider anything other than their very new streaming service subscription numbers. What about their headphones and their purported revenue and profits?

    2) I'm not sure 24-bit for streaming is viable. How much data would that be per song? Or rather, how many more times the data would be be per song?

I didn't know Apple wanted to get into the headphone industry and to begin putting their name on a crappy sounding pair of headphones. Now if they are going to remove the current models and redesign them so they sound better, that's another story, but they would have to get some serious engineers that come from Sennheiser, Grado, etc. that make the high end products and figure out how to make them better for cheaper in a mass produced manner which is difficult to do since the higher priced better headphones use expensive materials (drivers) which is why they cost more.. Beats headphones aren't that great in the area of accurate sound reproduction as they are designed to acceuate bass frequencies for those that listen to highly processed music. I doubt you are going to see anyone that produces classical recordings uses Beats headphones, whereas they'll use the HD800's or some high end pair when they use headphones during the production process.

Why are you conflating the original Beats by Dre phones with all headphones made by Beats?

    Think about this:

Perhaps Apple bought Beats to prevent their myriad of competitors from doing so.

Imagine if FB, Amazon or Pandora announced a deal with Beats, especially with very recent reports of both a FB and Amazon phone!

Or imagine if Beats partnered with Microsofts' newly purchased Nokia handset division. WindowsPhone would be able to expand it's influence in urban and lower income consumer markets.

If Google announced a deal with Beats including hiring Dr Dre. mirth would be unconfined on this thread.

Where were all the supporters when HTC had an alliance with Beats. Presumably you posted that it was a great idea so where are the posts?

Where are any HTC supporters? There sales don't indicate they have many.

because they typically sound like crap.  Beats IS Dr. Dre.  He's one of the founders.  It's basically different levels of crap headphones.  I have a fiend of mine that worked at an Apple Store that's also a recording engineer and he can't stand any of the Beats headphones and he's listened to them all.  I've only listened to a handful of the most recent models and they sucked.   I'd take a pair of HD800's any day of the week if I was someone that actually used headphones, but I don't like wearing something on my head when listening to music.  I can see for traveling on a plane because earbuds are REALLY uncomfortable, but I like sonic accuracy.  Beats headphones are not known for that.

People like you who scream racism every five minutes are an embarrassment.

Who gives a crap if he's black? You do apparently. You're a racist.

The fact of the matter is that I have no respect for any "gangsta rappers".

Then let me be more clear, why are you conflating the 2008 Beats by Dre: Studio headphones with all the other speaker models they sell and have sold? That's like saying the iPhone camera sucks but only considering the original iPhone camera as proof that all future iPhone cameras must also suck.

But hey Beats make money and teenagers like them so that's all that matters apparently. Who would have thought Apple's first big acquisition would be for overpriced crappy headphones marketed to teenagers.

And look who thinks this is a good idea....that tells me it's a terrible idea.

Haha, that's hilarious. If that dude thinks that it's a good idea, then you know that it's bad for Apple.<img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

I haven't seen him around here lately, so I guess he's been busy posting over there.

And on a slightly unrelated note, I own a few different pairs of headphones, and one of them actually is a signature model, that has a black person's name on it (shocker!), and I like those headphones a lot.<img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

It's a Quincy Jones signature model by AKG, Q701. Now that is one talented producer, that also happens to be black. I don't put Quincy Jones and Dr. Dre on the same level, not a chance. One of them makes great productions, and the other one is known mostly for profanity. People who wish that they were thugs don't impress me.

There is something called integrity.  Just because someone makes a lot of money selling something doesn't mean it's better.  Look at McDonalds. They sell the most hamburgers, but they certainly aren't the highest quality hamburgers, are they?

I don't want to see Apple putting out crap products just to make money and in the case of Beats, they sell a product to cater to the musically ignorant that don't understand SOUND quality.  That's MY issue with this.  The other issue is that the Beats subscription service isn't making any money and I don't think they needed to buy Beats to enter into the subscription service.  Now, if they just bought the company to prevent Google from buying them and they manage to get Beats headphones to sound better and they keep Dr. Dre off the Apple list of upper management, Im all for that.  Dr. Dre doesn't put out quality music.

Steve Jobs was an Apple executive, why not Dr. Dre ?

What are they supposed to have in common?

The part of this still classic song I find hilarious in the early days of N.W.A. is that Dre says that he doesn't smoke weed because it's known to cause brain damage.

Since Apple is a large corporation, do they do drug testing of all employees?
