Apple has never and will never succeed at headphones and speakers. Beats has succeeded and will continue to dominate. It's a much-needed acquisition.

I'm willing to bet that Beats sells 10x as many headphones to the 18-25 demographic as Bose does, and Bose has the better sound quality.

Most people out there don't realize how big headphones/earbuds have become. Beats is the number one player, by far, in the market.

Apple is going to use Beats to raise it's cool factor. Beats will maintain it's name, but everyone will know that it's associated with Apple. Apple will spend hundred of millions in marketing the Beats brand, making the $ Samsung pays it's celebrity endorsers seem paltry in comparison.

Apple's brand doesn't lend itself to celebrity endorsement and it never will. But, Beats on the other hand does, and will be extremely helpful in marketing Beats and Apple products by association.

Apple has plenty of ads with celebrities in them. The Siri and Switchers ads readily come to mind.

edit: Oh, and the Silhouettes ads which were specifically geared toward iPod+iTunes sales.

I think you're old enough to understand that bigotry isn't just the word you use but the way it which it's used which is why words like nigger get considered as "cursed" words in the first place. It's the same irrational thought process that makes people write darn instead of damn, a$$ instead of ass, and f@#k instead of **** on message boards. It's the language equivalent of the childish game siblingly play called "I'm not touching you." If you mean a word then use that fucking word but don't hide behind a racist veil by using the word black or N-word in it's place because only the willfully ignorant will fall for it.

So you think that people should use the full N-word instead of writing N-word? That sounds good to me, except I know that some forums would ban people for writing the full N-word, regardless of the poster's intentions.

As for the usage of those words, if it's good enough for a rumored Apple executive, then it's good enough for me.

And the reason why some people would use a$$ on a forum, instead of simply writing ass, is because there are various filters in place on different sites, and writing a$$ would bypass that filter. Blame the filters, don't blame the people who may have found a way to circumvent any silly filters.

Yeah, I want an Apple robot that hovers around the room. I want to be blown away, by something incredible. I expect amazing things from Apple, and here we get what? Mediocre headphones? And people think that's a good idea? <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

What I think is that people shouldn't make racist comments. A string of letters or grouping of phonemes can't be inherently racist; It's the person that is using them that can be racist, but that fact doesn't change if they substitute one word or phrase for another.

One day I hope that all racial slurs will be as silly sounding as these unbelievably tame, once highly offensive swear words: scalawag, nincompoop, and tarnation.

I think that racist accusations are thrown around way too often, and the word has practically lost all meaning, and has turned into a joke instead.

Well at least this is worth a ???? ????

Jong Ive co-chaired the Tipping Point anti-poverty benefit this year. This is the organization Apple and other tech companies pledged $500K each to help end poverty in the Bay Area. It raised $12M. :)

    Short story, short:

AIR, the year was 2008.  We had just finished merging the iTunes files from all the family's (5 people) computers/users onto a dedicated 2 TeraByte external drive -- thousands of songs and many, many playlists.  Then the first headless iPod shuffle arrived. So many options, what to do ... what to do? There was an option where you could let iTunes randomly choose the songs to install on an iPod Shuffle ... Oh, what the hell -- do it!  What a pleasant experience -- I heard songs I never would have picked, but just seemed right. I heard (new fav) songs that I'd never heard before, like "Come Dancing" by The Kinks ... What a pleasant experience!

    Long story, long:

AIR, it was last night!  A few weeks ago, my granddaughter, Marlowe, drove up to Fisherman's Wharf -- and has been taunting us, ever since, about the fresh clam chowder she had.  Yesterday, we went to CostCo and picked up 9 lbs ($40, worth in 2 packages -- each the size of a football) of fresh littleneck clams. Marlowe was going to cook fresh clam chowder for 4 (her mother loves seafood, but is allergic). I was watching the NBA playoffs in the familyroom open to the kitchen. Marlowe had about an hours worth of prep/cooking to do -- out of courtesy to her mom, she asked me if she could switch the TV to AppleTV and play one of her mom's favorite jazz playlists.

Fine with me -- then I told Marlowe about the Beats app, how great it was and showed her a little on my iPad. She was distracted, said that she had to get back to her cooking -- but would look into the Beats app later.

The evening progressed, family members wandering in and out, helping by peeling potatoes, chopping onions, tasting, setting the table, critiquing, bickering ... we all contribute like this when the family makes tacos, homemade pasta, pirogue, lahmajoon ...

All the while, the AppleTV was creating the perfect mood -- playing the relaxing music of Billie Holiday, Ella, Frank ,,, The Mormons have a saying: "Happiness is family home evening" -- that's what this was.

The clam chowder was fantastic (the wine was pretty good, too). We all helped clean up -- then switched the TV back to the NBA playoffs.

This morning, I was lying in bed, playing with Beats ... I wonder ... (sound of hand slapping forehead). What If I had let Beats select the music on my iPad and AirPlayed it to the AppleTV? Duh!

Ella, Frank, Billie, Carmen, Harry Connick, Diana Krall ...

    1000

Wouldn't it be great if iBeats could stream a mixture, say 60/40, of in-our-library and not-in-our-library tunes -- add a little spice.

This is a match made in heaven iBeats for AirPlay/AppleTV!

Jimmy is right on -- iBeats knows what the next song is [should be].

Can't you do that with iTunes Radio? I like the idea of a playlist that can incorporate your own library mixed in with music you don't own. If you could tweak the proportions, it would be perfect.

    LOL.

I'm so done with you. You are unimaginable. Why? Because he's black? Because he has produced "Rap" music? You are embarrassment to human beings.

You're projecting onto Rogifan your own prejudices.

Looking forward to Dre taking stage at the keynote, calling everyone a n***** and a a motherf***er, putting down other rappers! talking about how good guns and drugs are and who he is going to shoot. Let's hope a lot of these rumours aren't true.
This is such a misguided and untrue statement. Dr. Dre is a extremely intelligent man who creativity has spurred a billion dollar industry. Dr. Dre knows how to make deals with high level execs and obviously can speak well to make it happen. He has paved the path for many others while creating opportunities they could only dream about. He practically invented a sub-genre and has been wildly successful in starting new and highly profitable business's. No matter your thoughts on Beats, it is a leading company in it's industry and has the mind-share of the masses.

So intelligent that he made a complete fool of himself in a Facebook video.

I'll bite. Then can you define music for us?

No, but I can define two genres that aren't: rap and hip hop. There are many more, of course.

So the billions of dollars the rap culture makes is what? Rap is music, you may not like it or think it is but that doesn't mean it's not.

People just like listening to noise. Rap has nothing to do with music.

    That's a very ignorant statement.

    music |?myo?ozik|
    noun
1 vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Why don't you think it's music?

<span style="line-height:1.4em;">Rogifan, these are for you...  Open your mind and learn something...</span>

Apart from the fact that all the people wearing headphones look like tits, because that's what headphones do, what are we supposed to learn?

Most hilarious is most of these rappers refer to each other as the N word and they get pissed off when a white person refers to them as the N word?

It is a double standard based on the ludicrous notion that "races" exist but it's certainly not hilarious. My issue with any discrimination based on "race" is that it will ultimately beget racism, regardless of the original intent. For example, Affirmative Action has had very positive effects in society but it also brings with it a slew of negative feelings because one can't be certain if they are the best person for the job if the choice is ultimately a "race"-based quota. For racism to ever truly be abolished we will need to remove everything that allows a group of people based on "race" to do something that is not allowed by another group.
Not all blacks refer to each other as the N word because they are a little more educated and actually use the English language and/or another language they were brought up learning instead of street slang also known as Ebonics.

You're irrationally conflating a lot of things here today. Language and we use it is a part of culture and has no barring on one's level of education.

Perish the thought that there is such a thing as black culture. Until white and black all like exactly the same thing, we are all terribly racist and to be berated.

Racism is to celebrated. We are all racist. Prejudice, not so much.

Claims of buying this for its Contracts with Labels or ``Streaming Service algorithms'' makes me question you folks knowledge of Apple and the actual massive streaming infrastructure Apple already has in-place, not to mention the algorithms they've been developing for the past 16 years.

Apple has been getting content producers on-board for the past 18 months.

There is something else, at work, in this arrangement.
    Apple's own music label?

I always thought people who walk around in public with their earbuds appear antisocial. They look down, no eye contact, never interact, never say good morning, etc. No one ever asks them about the weather or the upcoming weekend, or last night's big game. Wearing headphones in public is just a more extreme version of the same phenomena. It's like "Go Away. Don't bother me. I don't acknowledge your presence." I'm not so sure this is a good direction for modern culture. It breeds isolationism and that is never good for young people. They need to be developing social skills not avoiding them.

Not having random strangers engage me with vacuous chitchat is a major reason why I wear headphone in public. Of course, I listen to music, lectures, podcasts, etc., but I oft wear them even when not listening to anything. For example, when studying at Starbucks it helps keep people from asking, "What are you studying?," or other annoying questions while I'm concentrating. I can't get mad them since I have the choice to remove myself from the public setting but it's still annoying. Unfortunately it only works some of the time. People will literally wave at me to ask me a meaningless question. Perhaps I need something that standout better than Apple's in-ear phones; something like Beats.

Acquire a fierce demeanour, and people won't trouble you so much.
