Many here do not understand, it does not concern Russia if Apple spies or does not, opens the code or does not.  This is basically a first move to make everyone in Russian gov't(they don't care about privacy of russian people)  use some version of Russian made Android phone.   Similar to new processors bought from a russian manufacturer as opposed to Intel.  This is done for two reasons:

    1. Funnel gov't money to some corrupt Putin crony.

    2. Easily monitor everyone in the government, and media.

    This is simply a retaliation
What is Russia doing as a retaliation? Nothing's happening or even being threatened.
I did a quick search and it looks like any ban based on Apple not providing source code
Nothing in the article mentions or even hints at retaliation or a ban of anything...

Um.  No.  The US Government does not sell to just anyone or any country.  And their reasoning for that depends both on their political views and how the government is likely to use the weapons once the sale (or gift as in some cases) has been completed.

Back on topic. It's perfectly fine for Russia to ask. And for Apple to say 'no' (I expect they will). If I recall right, Blackberry often handed out its backdoor secrets to governments, including many repressive ones. Other governments will ask too, mark my words.

The NSA spying scandal -- and thank you, Edward Snowden -- has a lot of the world on its edge. Like it or not, it will have a huge and unfortunate ripple effect on some of the brightest spots of the US economy, namely IT/consumer electronics/social networking/e-commerce/software.

Finding a long-term solution is the only way out.

Probably late to the meeting cause he was busy getting allow the source code from build guys, plus the code and specs for all prototypes for future devices.¡

But seriously, even if Apple did give them some code, they probably won't understand one line. And besides, Russia doesn't run the world and Apple is not indebted to them for anything.

Actually, the Russians have excellent coders – maybe not software developers, but hackers.

…and btw, we don't run the world anymore either  :\

I'm not taking the side of Hamas here.  But your example would be better if the USA were building settlements across the border in Mexico, preventing medical aid, food, etc from entering the area, and pretty much treating the Mexican citizens as second class.

In that case, could you see why some of the Mexicans would launch rockets at San Diego?

Again - is Hamas right? Of course not.  But Israel isn't squeaky clean here, either.  A 2 state solution is the only answer, IF both sides will get serious about peace.

You speak of genocide as if it's a bad thing. There's bad genocide and then there's good genocide.

Wiping out Hamas falls under the good category. And just for the record, I don't advocate genocide against any entire population, just the terrorists. I am a humanitarian at heart, and I don't advocate the unnecessary killings of any civilians. I don't really see the terrorists as being worthy of having human status, so their deaths mean nothing to me, and it brings me great joy.

And yes, there are also plenty of other groups around that need to be eradicated, like Al Qaeda, The

ISIS clowns and countless other groups that share their goals. Wipe them all out, and the world will be a much better place. There are countless groups that need to be eliminated.

They know Apple won't give up the source.

This is just a prelude to escalating trade sanctions.   Russia will ban the iPhone under the pretext of security concerns instead of calling it tit for tat.

In this case you should thank the NSA for opening this huge can of worms (bag of hurt). If IOS, OSX, all Windows, and Android were, say Chinese, or Korean, or even Russian, and a similar revelation as the NSA spying was revealed, how much would you trust the aforementioned systems to run the government, business and personal computers of the USA? Not much I'd wager and you'd probably feel the request to peek at the source code was a fair request.

Its always interesting to turn the tables in the name of perspective. I'm not saying they will, or should cave, but perhaps that the request is not without merit and the burden needs to be on Apple et al's shoulders to prove their case.

Russia government has no right, without any proves they sound racists, why do you put Apple os in the same boat with that bloatware os? If Apple were in the same bed with the US government than literally Android, Windows shouldn't exist and Bill Gates he should be in prison for stealing

    Rest in peace, Shamesung.

I know of a couple of crazies in the 20th century who thought similarly, and nearly wiped out entire populations.

    Wow. Just wow.

I am quite aware of that history as I have a little bit of Jewish blood in me, and I am also aware of what Hamas wants and what it states in their official charter.

They want me dead, and one of me is worth more than every single Hamas member on the planet, so I have no problems with calling for their complete destruction. If it comes down to me or them, I'm going to have to side with me. I don't care how many of them have to die to be honest.

I am completely ok with millions of casualties, if it comes down to that.

FWIW there were reports back in 2008 that the Chinese demanded source code from every computer hardware manufacturer and hey had until May 2009 to comply. The Chinese used the phrase "obligatory accreditation system for IT security products" and explained it was "to prevent computer viruses taking advantage of software vulnerabilities and to shut out hackers". Failure to comply supposedly meant a ban from the China market. Thee was no further mention after 2008, at least until very recently. Microsoft had their offices in China raided just a day or so ago in a search for evidence MS was cooperating with US intelligence. I would assume that it included anything they could seize in the way of Microsoft software or operating code.

I didn't hear to many protests when countries here in the west were skeptical, and some (in my opinion correctly) banned the installation of Huawei telecom structure, not quite the same but still a fairly similar reaction which I can quite understand trying to see it from the other side.
