And note Vertu phones have a convergence feature which is like getting someone on the phone instantly to look up anything you want.

I think there's a difference between a watch and a technology item such as Vertu's no doubt overpriced tarted up phones that will be as obsolete as the £ 50 option in the same time. Surely more appropriate is a comparison to something like the vinyl record industry. At one end of the market, decimated by tapes, cd's then the appalling mp3 quality. Now making a comeback admittedly mostly in the luxury market as people recognise the quality compared to the rubbish technology version we've had rammed down our throats.
Hope that makes some sense, reading back I'm not sure it does.
Yes, some of the obscenely priced watches will only be seen by most as just that, I just can't see many watch enthusiasts throwing away decent mechanical watches in favour of technology. Ultimately time will tell (no intentional pun there!)

Never been aware of Vertu until you pointed them out.. Boy do they know how to make some ugly looking kit that only the ostentatious must be in the market for

edit - did you mean concierge service?

But that's my point. In 2006 that wasn't seen as possible for a relatively low-priced handset to hurt the luxury brands. Back then these were people that preferred to use a gaudy dumb phone over the then so-called smartphones. I contend that convenience is more important than people like to give it credit for. If a luxury item, like an expensive car, offers certain conveniences over a lesser model people will see it as superior, but if a luxury item pales in comparison to a considerably more convenient item it'll have a harder time being able to maintain its dominance if and when there is a paradigm change.

There is a reason not everyone wants a $213,000 gold shirt, and it's not because it costs too much.

    I did.

Alas, that this comment can be posted and replied to with no one objecting to the inherent sexism is further evidence of the imbalance. This is exactly the sort of atmosphere that needs to be neutralized. Both here, and in the tech industry in general.

    I did.

Sorry, missed the point a tad there! Agreed, convenience is important, may just be that I'll be classed as old school as like having something mechanical on my wrist.
As for the gold story, gold has places it should be seen & places it shouldn't - to me a shirt is definitely in the latter part of that comment even if I did have multi millions lying about.
What's that phrase - money doesn't buy you taste?

Depends how you read it.. Some could take that as the poster complimenting some Swiss women on say their sport achievements such as Martina Hingus & Denise Biellmann or Johanna Spyri for being the author of Heidi.
No doubt my points there are wrong & the poster was referring to typical blonde swiss ladies, Ursula Andress etc but hey, you never know.
Personally I've never thought of AI as a boys club, just an apple related site which sometimes goes a little far in its dislike of android & samsung

I didn't see anything untruthful in the poster's statement. The Swiss are renown for both.

Still no watch part leaks. Until then, I don't think we'll see a watch on the 9th. Was there ever an iPod, iPhone, or iPad launch that wasn't preceded by part leaks? I don't remember any, but I'm not sure.

Normally I skip over comments like this, but this struck a nerve with me. If you were to switch the comment around, and it was a girl that said that about men dipped in chocolate, I can almost bet money nobody would jump up and down saying that was sexism. If anything, it is natural for the opposite sex (and sometimes same sex, not ruling anything out) to objectify and to fantasize about the gender of their choice. His comment was at best benign.

Now, if he turned around and told some lady poster on here to shut up and dip herself in chocolate, that is sexism. That crap needs to end. Saying that a Swiss woman would be fantastic if dipped in Swiss chocolate (slightly on topic and obviously sarcastic) when we are talking about the Swiss and what would happen if the iWatch were to directly compete with their market, is a bit of perverse fun, and nothing more.

He wasn't talking about a girl, he was talking about women. You just illustrated that you're squarely immersed in a male supremacist culture. You can't switch the comment around as if you're dealing with equal players, when one is "a girl" and the other is "a man."

God, have we ever gone backward since the 1970s. Read your Germaine Greer, it's very entertaining. She's Australian, by the way, so she knows what she's talking about when she talks about immature jerk-off men. Not that she lacked for material dealing with American men.

Oh great! Until now everyone in Switzerland was a banker, now they're all watchmakers... How I love generalisation and reduction of this sort. LOL

I winced at that too, of course, being the fascist liberal that I am, but I had my hands full with Apple ][ and his Aussie bootlicker buddies. Thanks for pointing it out, agree completely.

You forgot about them being neutrality cowards. See post #4. Oh, and blonde chocolate makers.

Actually no, you can't be. Because you would probably know that Sweden is known for blonde people, not Switzerland...

Ireland is a neutral country also.  I haven't noticed Apple ][ being too upset as a shareholder that Apple has managed to save many billions in taxes be availing of this terrible neutral country he so disapproves of.

I mentioned the purported Ive comment to my son, and he replied: "Are Apple about to go into the chemicals and pharmaceutical industries then?"

What does Apple make, or has ever made, that you might envisage passing down to your children or grandchildren, that would still be in perfect working order and capable of performing it's intended functions as well as anything they could go out and buy new - apart from the astonishing technical marvel that is the liquid metal SIM ejection tool?

Seriously, you are squabbling over semantics? Girl : Woman is to Boy : Man. In other words, they are the same thing. I have no problems with females in general, and I make a point to treat them either the same or better than our male counterparts.

And while your statement is correct (we do live in a male dominated society), I know that my stance is not so. I want a purely equal environment, which was the point of my statement (which you apparently glossed over and found the one piece that could be flame-baited on). If you think that women do not objectify men in the same way, you obviously have been lied to, not paying attention, or (if you are a woman) suppressing your own basic animal instincts.

Well, neither, just echoing some ignorance from earlier in the thread, where somebody was talking nonsense about Ursula Andress and Heidi, etc.

I would venture my own ignorant hypothesis from America, that the Swiss would have a large pre-Indo-European component, then an equal measure of Celtic/Gallic, with some Germanic stirred in on top, or side-loaded. The love of fine machinery is maybe Celto-Germanic. How's that for generalization? Anyway, not much blonde.

Very good. Apple has a ways to go when it comes to longevity. But then it's a new developing field, whereas mechanical timekeeping is mature.

We need better ways of generating and storing electricity also. The hundred-year iPhone. I suspect the silversmith's son would be into it.

Humankind, as well as Steve Jobs and the personal computer industry, owes its greatest debt to Albert Hofmann and his wonderful employer Sandoz of Basel, for the enhanced vision provided by the refined sacramental chemicals of the ergot fungus. Basel has a pharmaceutical tradition going back into prehistory, I would imagine, but I haven't seen it explored in popular literature. Maybe ask your son? Many have thought Hofmann's work was the antidote to the atomic bomb.
