Bottom line is, in order to continue using the Apple ecosystem of products and services, I must adapt to their current offerings whether I like them or not. The only other choice, is switching my platform entirely to Android, or Windows, etc. Nevertheless it is a choice I did not have to make Monday and one I am forced into by Apple's choices. You want me to accept responsibility for my preferences? Sure. But "don't buy one" is a lazy and simplistic answer, and a sad excuse for customer service.

The 5s is a current product as is the 5c.  Apple isn't forcing you to make any decision in 2014.  Nor in 2015.  Or in 2016.  Or probably in 2017.

They just dropped support for the iPhone 4 in iOS 8.  So in order to "continue using the Apple ecosystem or product and services" you have three more years before you need to do anything at all if you own the 5S.  The only thing you lack is NFC as the RAM remains the same.  The A7 also has a Secure Enclave although it's likely somewhat different from the A8.

Given nobody knows what the future holds no one can say if they will or will not make an updated 4" version using the A8 to replace the 5C and 5S at the bottom of the lineup.

Apple hasn't discontinued making 4" phones.  So whining is more than premature. ESPECIALLY since most folks with a 5S won't replace their phones this year but next year.

A lot of the times I use mine as a phone is in the car where I use my hand free setup or risk a ticket or I have my zagg buds on on that has a mic in the controls so i use that.

5.5" against your head can look silly but you get used to anything.  It used to look VERY silly to take pictures with an iPad.  Now it's just a little silly since so many folks do it.

Upgrading from a 4s. I cut out, planed and sanded poplar wood for the 5s, 6, 6+ to get a feel... I'll be going with the 6+ even though it does feel a bit large (I can almost use it one handed) and it will be awkward to carry around (putting this thing in a holster will look retarded). I am hoping that maybe the watch will allow me discrete small viewing at meetings when bored...

My wife will be going with the 6. I find the 6 definitely fits my hand easier...

Same here. I was dead set on getting the 4.7" model, but I'm drawn to the better battery life and OIS. Guess I'll be going with the Plus. I may end up selling my iPad mini Retina as well, as that will become somewhat redundant.

I can definitely see where the 6 Plus and iPad mini are close enough in size to debate needing both.

For me, I'll be happy going forward with a 6 Plus and and iPad Air. Though I already know I will be using the iPad Air a bit less, as there a few certain tasks I hope to enjoy on the iPhone instead, that normally demand iPad.

Games - many games that I have on both iPhone and iPad....I've opted to use on iPad. With 6 Plus I hope to reclaim some of that to my pocketable device.

Reading - Safari, iBooks, RSS, Appleinsider! and others. All things I'm more comfortable doing on iPad, but look forward to seeing on 6 Plus.

You don't have to presume to know that Steve Jobs said whatever was necessary to sell their current agenda, until it changed, and then would say whatever necessary to sell that new agenda. iPod video was trashed by Steve 1 year before he launched it on stage. Get a clue to how it actually works, and stop believing anything they say (or he said) was "personal" or sincere in anyway. Its all marketing speak.

This helped. Will still try both in person, but almost 100% on the 4.7.
The 5.5 is just too big for my tastes. I'm glad it exists though, if only to put a stop to the shitty "look how tiny the iPhone is" ads from Samsung.

That's great! I made a 6 and a 6+ to scale out of wood today. Now I can glue this to the top. I think I could get comfortable with the 6

Wow, you've got a really low opinion of Steve Jobs.

I carry an iPad mini and iPhone 5s. I just can't see the little screen in the 5s...

I will go with the 6 plus and quit carrying the mini with me..

I am 6'-4" with big hands and the plus is just right of me. I can one hand operate the screen..

Thanks Apple for realizing that larger people do exist!!!!!!

I'm leaning towards the 6+ but can't help wonder if this is how I'll look when taking a call:

Yes and no, which is why my whole point with this line of debate is based solely on expressing my desire that I HOPE Apple does not forsake the 4" screen for those of us who prefer our phones on the smaller side. And while I can buy a 5s which will likely be perfectly serviceable for several more years, that doesn't address my desire to take advantage of the latest technology. Just like I would love it if my iPhone 4 could exploit Siri, and do FaceTime over cellular. So I've already had to make decisions in the past about whether or not to upgrade my phone, and I chose not to because I felt I could live without those key advancements, along with the bigger screen. But I want NFC. I'm an avid Passbook user, and I've been waiting for this. So now Apple's choice with the iPhone 6 has put me in the position of making yet another decision. What you call whining is merely me expressing out loud my hopes and opinions -- If Apple fails to offer new 4" screens with next years refresh, then I will be forced to decide then whether to hold onto my 5s another year and continue to do without NFC and Apple Pay, or upgrade to the iPhone 6 then -- or switch platforms to get everything I want (if that's even possible). I would buy an iPhone 6 now if they offered a 4" screen, so I'm already forced to make a decision now to not buy it. I recognize why they might be holding off, but if they don't offer the 4" screen next year, then there's another decision I'm forced to make, followed by another decision a year later -- all because Apple may choose to abandon the design philosophy that informed the iPhone for 7 generations. I sincerely hope they don't, because I don't want to have to choose, and because I think it's a mistake to shepherd all of their customers in a direction that doesn't serve many customer's needs for compact portability in a phone or smart device. Whining? No, pleading.

That cutout PDF was a great idea.  I took my scissors to an Amazon box and used some spray glue to glue 2 layers of carboard together and then the cutout diagram for each phone size.  I currently own a iPhone 5.

I use my iPhone a lot with 1 hand.  Typically I type with my thumb while my pinky cradles under the bottom of the phone for support and other 3 fingers are on the left hand side.  It's a secure feeling, I've never dropped it doing this, and I can control the phone quite efficiently.

However, I have been wanting a larger phone for some time.  I love to use my phone for photography and vidoes, surf the web a lot, and like to stream on it.  Making phone calls is low on the priority list.  So a larger screen would be worth the trade off of portability.  But my question was is the 6 plus just too big?  That screen would be awesome, and the better battery and full 1080p would be great, but do I want to lug around a 5.5" phone all the time?

Here are some pictures of how much I can stretch my thumb across the screen of each size phone.

As you can see the plus is HUGE!  And in order to use my thumb on the bottom right side of the screen, my fingers on the left side need to slide to the underside of the phone, no longer securing it on the side.  One handed use is pretty difficult and would be close to impractical.  But oh that screen!

    Decisions decisions :)

This is great for "Hummer" fans or people with very large pockets or always carrying a bag but I would like to be able to update my iPhone 4S with a similar sized item someday (3.5" screen)..

I see it differently. (Does that mean I "Think Different?")

Over the years, Apple has had ample opportunity to observe how people use their phones, and undoubtedly noticed, partly as a result of Samsung making big phones, that there are buyers for whom one-handed use not a big deal. Many of use two hands anyway, even with the smaller screen.

If enough buyers are saying "bigger screen, please" while responding to one-handed use with "meh, whatever," or "I like to use my phone with one hand whenever possible, but a bigger screen WOULD be handy," then the current offerings make sense. That doesn't mean that one-handed use isn't a consideration, just that it moved down a step on the priority list. You can still use one hand for >90% of typical operations, so a quick, extra step for the remaining 10% (or just occasionally using your other hand for a moment) isn't a bad compromise.
