Whoa there cowboy.  Nobody is forcing you to do anything.  Don't want one?  Don't buy one.

Let's see. In order to continue using their services, on which I have become dependent, I must upgrade to their current product, or transition my needs to another platform. Hmmm. How about coercing? Either way, Apple is FORCING me to make a decision, if NOTHING else, by taking away my options. So there you go. We can parse semantics all day. Bottom line is, in order to continue using the Apple ecosystem of products and services, I must adapt to their current offerings whether I like them or not. The only other choice, is switching my platform entirely to Android, or Windows, etc. Nevertheless it is a choice I did not have to make Monday and one I am forced into by Apple's choices. You want me to accept responsibility for my preferences? Sure. But "don't buy one" is a lazy and simplistic answer, and a sad excuse for customer service.

Is there something about the 5S that makes it unsuitable for you? I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, I'm just trying to understand the position of those who feel alienated by the new iPhones.

Besides NFC, are any of the new features hardware dependent, or will iOS8 bring them to older phones, too? Can't you continue to enjoy every part of the Apple ecosystem except NFC payments, plus enjoy a smaller screen and get a lower price, by buying an iPhone 5S instead of an iPhone 6?

EDIT: Wrote this before seeing posts later in the thread. You already answered this.

I'm excited to read the first hands-on reviews of these paper models!

Lightweight, thin, great battery life but not waterproof. Same as the iPhone 6 really but a lot cheaper and for one handed mode, just fold the top down.

I'll reserve judgement until I get the 6 in my hands. But having had the 5s in my hands, I was even dreading upgrading to it ue to the increase in size.

There's a comparison video here between the 5S and 6:

The 4.7" iPhone 6 will break one-handed usage for some people but not everyone and isn't physically much more bulky than the iPhone 5S so pocketability should be ok.

The 5.5" iPhone is more for people who want an ultraportable or pocketable tablet. It's not a phone, it's a convergence device between a phone and a tablet aka phablet. It's not a subsititute for a real tablet for prolonged usage but would be ok for occasional reading:

    1000

The demand in smartphones hasn't shifted to phablets. Phablet sales make up a fraction of the sales of the mainstream models. The iPhone 6 will vastly outsell the 6+ but the plus is there as an option for the few who want one.

That may have been the 5 and 5S but I suspect not. The sizes might have differed though. Steve could have had a part in the aesthetic design and then Apple saw customers asking for larger screens and scaled it up.

For anyone who own a tablet like the iPad, why in the hell would you want the 6 ? You ever see how dumb it looks to hold one of those to your ear?

If you're printing through Adobe, make sure you select "Actual Size" from the print menu...

    Holy OLD Android troll joke!

As Apple has proven on Tuesday, that isn't the direction being taken for making the iPhone larger.

On top of that, the Android freaks were making jokes about the iPhone 5 being made longer, but they all failed to realize Apple was just going to 16:9 like all of the flagship Android phones of the time.

Don't understand why he didn't gave us all a 3D printer model in the first place.

Do we all have 3D printers? At least most of us still have to deal with printers.

True, but how to get the feeling of the device if it's a printout?

Order more than one flavor from SodaStream, wait for the bottles to arrive, and then cut up the cardboard box they came in. Glue two layers together and cut to the size of the iPhone. Boom. Perfect size.

    “That’s oddly specific…”

Yeah, I wonder where it came from…

    1) But what to do with the SodaStream?

    2) You're a Wall Street guy, posting from the floor?

edit: those are not your piano hands

Oh, they just happened to use the right weight of cardboard to get the thickness right. I don’t know anything about cardboard or I’d just say the weight of the cardstock. :p

No, they are. The thumbs are great for everything but guitar and violin. Real pain to hold…

Yes, and so my question is, why not put phone capabilities in the mini too (or the air for that matter)? Apple seems fixated on using these devices with one hand, but only if a phone's built-in. They seem to be clueless at how many people are using them to make FaceTime, Skype, and other VOIP calls everyday using the cellular radios already built-in to many of the iPads sold. So what's with restricting the capabilities? Is it to force people who want a pad and a phone to buy two devices? Or is there some problem with the carriers supporting it?

The 6 series is too big for me anyway, but now that Apple is crossing the line into phablet territory, how many people are only going to buy the 6Plus and nothing else? Currently if I want NFC and a small phone, I'm going to have to buy the 5s and the Watch. I already have to buy the tablet if I want a reasonably sized browsing experience. But those folks who desire the phablet are in the sweet spot -- one device can almost do it all with fewer compromises than any other. Your 6.2" model would wreck Apple's entire business model. Haha

So I printed this off and the dimensions are all incorrect on this......took my iPhone 5S and laid it down on top on the iPhone 5S mockup on the printed page and my phone is larger than the picture by a great deal.....i think you printed off a mock up of the iPhone 4 instead of the 5S......and then when I lay my %S down on the mockup of the iPhone 6 it matches perfectly......I think you better try this again......

As a side note, my wife decided that for now, she'd just take my 5 (coming from a 4S). So we are moving to the Verizon Edge plan. Worst case I get the 6 now, and if I decide the 6 Plus is the way to go, I can easily get the 6S Plus next year and give her the 6.

And the cases? Making me consider white!

The only thing I have decided on was 64 GB

    Thanks, Apple! Too many choices!

Good thinking. Too many choices, as you say.

I am veering towards the white silicon case with the silver 64GB iPhone 6. That case is even more invisible than the leather one.

I have no problem with Apple catering to people who want to carry something like this around. But short-changing those of us who don't want to carry a tablet around in our pockets is just cruel. I'd like an iPhone 6, but the reality is it doesn't offer much over the 5 aside from screen size, better camera and faster processor. It does offer NFC, but Apple Pay is not likely to make a major impact until the iPhone 6S arrives, at which time Apple will hopefully come to their senses and offer an iPhone 6 mini to replace the 5s.

Not holding my breath, as the 4s form factor was quickly phased out, and I'd prefer it even over the 5.

Oh well, time to buy 5s ... I'm a little concerned I won't be able to get the deal I had hoped for since they will be in such demand by those who don't subscribe to this phablet trend.

Not that it matters, but I have to wonder what Steve Jobs would have said about the 6 series ...

Steve would have said, "Time to move on."

    You're welcome.
