Glad you caught that keyword; I was hoping some clever and informed person would give his unbiased response on the matter of 'open' from Google.
Well, I don't know that I'd call myself "unbiased" any longer (see my sig). I used to be a huge Google fan but frankly they are starting to terrify me. I liked them when they were a complimentary service. Now they want to own the whole ball of wax. And for anyone who lived through the Microsoft Dynasty years, you know what a single dominant platform does. And it's not good. And Google is getting creepier by the day. Robots? Glasses that let you record everything you see and send it to Google servers without anyone being the wiser? Cars that drive themselves? (I'm sure for a convenient fee they'll be happy to route cars past your place of business.) Devices everywhere that know who I am, what I do, what I like that pump "personalized" advertising at me everywhere I go? This is a future I do not want. It's like every creepy sci-fi movie coming true.

Wow there! Completely missed that one! Though I do remember it now; you're certainly not putting it mildly.

Full agree sir. And free isn't of course free, though some like to prefer 'open'. Problem is, I don't see them closing up shop anytime soon...
Google is happy to hear you are passive and content, citizen!
Then just don't use their services, problem solved and not much more needs to be said on the matter. Talking about Google in the manner you are, especially in a Apple forum is like talking about Islam in a Christian forum, it just just provokes readers into an emotional response and is the very definition of Trolling. I personally fear every corporation and government entity that has control over or actively seeks personal data and Apple by the way is defiantly no exception. One is not more evil than the other, they all want to know as much information as possible to maximize profits or just fill a database. The trick is to keep as low of an internet profile as possible on the net, especially FaceBook and other social media. So what you have said so far pertaining to Google has already been said many, many times before on this board, did you bring anything new to the conversation except for hate, no, I don't think so.

No, trolling is endlessly trafficking an Apple forum to proclaim the superiority of Google (and rage against Apple's obvious flaws) without any acknowledgement of Google's actual business model. "Free and open!" "Cheaper hardware!" "Primary colors!" Yes, I stopped using Google services a year ago, thanks. But that hasn't stopped a million Google fanboys from flooding every Web forum on the planet (including AI and MacRumors) to scream at me that Google = good and Apple = evil. You'd think a market share of 85% would be sufficient for them, but they won't be satisfied until every person on Earth is being indexed, profiled, tracked and sorted by Google. Frankly that's not the world I want to live in. I don't want to see *anyone* (including Apple) with a stranglehold on the market like Microsoft once had. It's bad for you, it's bad for me, and Google is quickly becoming all that Microsoft was and much more. Sadly the self-proclaimed technologists who serve as Google's unofficial missionaries are oblivious to that fact.

I disagree with you there, Relic.
In no way are Apple and Google similar in their ethos towards privacy. Google do want as much information about us as possible, as you say. They have said it. They have ridiculed the idea of privacy. Apple, courtesy of Tim Cook, have recently emphasised their commitment to knowing as little about us as possible, which is diametrically opposed to Google's business model.

That's fine, no hurt feelings, I still stand by what I said though, I don't trust any corporation regardless of how nice a CEO may come off. The only company who really stood up to the governments PRISM program back in 2008 was Yahoo, who was even threatened with a 250.000 dollar a day penalty for not complying. I haven't heard of any other corporate entity doing that as of yet, others have said they didn't participate but, yeah I'm not going to take there word for it. It doesn't matter though, I still do not want to constantly read about how evil a corporation is here, any of them, this is a tech and most importantly an entertainment forum, hate just brings out the worst in people.

Perhaps an opposing viewpoint is healthy, hmm?
Yes, when the point of view is refreshing, what you have posted has been repeated more times than I or even the search engine for this site can count. It's a broken record, we all know.
Definition of a Troll, a troll (/?tro?l/, /?tr?l/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2]extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]
I didn't call you a Troll, I said you were trolling, trying to spark an emotional response with hate and disrupting the normal on-topic discussion. Once you start in on Google, everyone starts joining in and then the thread is basically hijacked and ultimately ruined. If you want to talk about Google and all of their evil ways, start a new thread, I'm sure you'll get lot's of people joining in on your crusade that will probably end up with lot's of hut feelings and unresolved issues.

Well, if the only online forums were forums where people didn't discuss anything that hadn't been discussed before, I suppose there would be no online forums.
And it's not trolling to denigrate Google on an Apple user forum. If I were on Android Police, now *that* would be trolling. I've never done that. But the Android fanatics love camping out at the Apple user forums to tell us how sucky Apple is.
And what I've said was not off topic (we're talking about switching from Android to iOS and why anyone would want to do that) nor hateful.
And I really doubt talking about Google's perceived/real/imagined nefarious ways will hurt anyone's feelings on Apple Insider, whether or not they are fans of the company (Google).
I think Google's business model combined with their worldwide market share in mobile OS and dominant position in search and mapping is a clear and present danger to technology users everywhere. I used to root for Google to break Microsoft's iron grip on technology. But now Google is merely taking their place. I don't want to see anyone in that position again and I have no problem sounding the alarm where others seem oblivious.

I never liked Microsoft's products much (though I do much more so in the last three years), but I still didn't have a problem with their position in the marketplace. It's always going to be some company. Apple and Google were able to accelerate in that environment, along with so many other tech companies. Google will rise and fall, or go through waves like Apple. That's just the way of things. Most companies rock and suck at the same time. At least we don't have legislation screwing up this market like we do with the horrible telecom industry.
The reason Google is growing like gangbusters now is that people are picking up what they're putting down. Their services are popular. If all they offered was crap, they'd have no play. As it is, many people jump in with both feet, and are not harmed. With Google's accelerated presence in our lives over the last 5 years, when do we start seeing the bad stuff that everyone fears? I was reading the same stuff two years ago. What's the next scene look like?
I don't "trust" big companies either, but in this world, in my job, and with my own business, Google technology is extremely useful to the level that I trust them. I profit from it.
On that note, Apple's privacy statement clearly states that they are tracking you for advertising purposes as well, yet they don't share much of that gathered data back with me in a useful manner like Google does. I know that Google wants me for their own profit, but I'm willing to play the game because I want to use their products.
One way I found that pretty easy is to use phone to phone transfer app, the trial version can use many times. This is user tutorial: how to transfer contacts from iPhone to Android phone. Btw, I was too lazy to transfer all the data manually from one phone to another so I did it via desktop utility:
