Apple really should not have released 10.10. They should have used this opportunity to create a new brand for their Mac OS, not necessarily 11, but a complete departure from the old way of doing things.
I'm of the mind that Apple should just keep the "OSX" moniker, redefining the "X" as a reference to the system's Unix roots.
Unsolved problems that still make a Windows experience regardless of number, a... Pain. In. The. A**!
1) NT Kernel was and is still crap;
2) OEMs forcing slagware, malware, custom crap GUI's to UIs that NO ONE understands, needs, or uses;
3) Windows software developers that feel they need to bundle hidden "installs" of 3rd-party crap to try and make a buck, that generally takes over browser task bars, and is a pain to remove;
4) The registry. No need to expound(!);
5) Settings cruft from versions as old as DOS itself... and still look that way too, including truncated names when searching for a file in the open dialog box.
6) Allowing software developers to do anything they damn well please, with absolutely NO GUI Guidelines.
Predictions:
1) Window 10 won't move the charts or be installed any more than 8... maybe less this time next year.
2) Microsoft will possibly make more money from Office for Mac, iOS and Android than from new upgrades on the Windows platform; Chromebook version on the horizon or already released.
3) This time next year we'll revisit this entire discussion when MS announces Windows 11, where none of the PAIN points above have been addressed... but the Windows 7 look will come back to desktops and the mobile OS will be spun off into Windows Polis***... because they can't use Metro in any way shape or form and have run out of ideas.

They have given up on one GUI to rule them all, but they haven't given up on one OS to rule them all. They have a concept called Continuum whereby as you add or remove hardware (e.g. connecting or removing a keyboard from your tablet) the GUI changes to best match the current hardware. If you plug a mouse in, the start menu replaces the start screen, etc. That's their long term vision anyway.
Apple doesn't have any combo devices like this so they only need one GUI per device so far. But Apple's idea basically won out - one GUI to rule them all just made for a sub par experience on every device.
The one I am using a the moment, it is not really any slower to boot than my 2014 MBP
Yeah, slow boot is becoming a thing of the past. My $600 2011 SSD Win7 laptop boots about 10 seconds slower than my 2012 MBA. My $400 spinny-drive Windows 8 kids' desktop boots in less than 10 seconds to login.
This Continuum feature MS demoed for 2-in-1's actually looks cool, and nicely done. I like how when you disconnect the keyboard, it automatically goes into multitouch mode and vice versa. Imagine if OSX got multi-touch capability and could automatically go back and forth between touch and keyboard / mouse? Watch the video;
Another great feature is Windows Universal Apps. If I buy an app on one device, I can download that app, for free, on ANY other device. So no paying for separately for apps on phone, tablet, or PC. This is something Apple should implement - unify the iOS & Mac App Stores and have universal iOS & Mac apps. Pay only once.

MS just does not understand the form factor: They have it completely backwards. The idea is NOT to start with the device, Microsoft is trying to shoe horn windows into every size of device and it doesn't work because trying to force the mouse and keyboard UI onto a tablet or anything else is stupid and has been proven not to work on a tablet. MS has virtually admited this when they attempted (very badly) recently to compare a surface pro (+$350 more costly) up against a Macbook Air. When they first brought out the surface they attempted to market it as tablet and failed. Now to save face they try to compete with laptops and are failing again.

Apple did this first with the iPhone, then applied it to the tablet and are now doing the same with the watch. Each form factor has a differently applied elements to make it work effectively. An exmaple is th watch, Samsung didn't think much about the wtach UI and tried to shoehorn the Android phone OS into its watch. Apple decided that pinch to zoom on such a small screen made no sense and so created the crown. instead to execute the same feature. This is an example of why comapanies like MS, Samsing, HTC etc will never make any thing great until they copy the way it should be done. I expect apple has the designs for the TV remote already completed but won't release a product until the correct TV market conditions are right.

The abiliy to pay for an app across platform is not a feature. A feature is an element of application. In any event, it is possible to buy the same app across devices on Apple iOS, For exampe I paid for Notability once and I have it on my iPhone, and my tablets. Admitedly I had to buy it again for the Macbook, but that a completely differnet OS. Yeah, I get about 15 seconds before I can open an app after signing in to Live. But we used to get that init even with the long boot, so it's improving.
Windows still sucks, don't get me wrong. Windows 7 is the only OS from MS that hasn't made me angry yet though.

It wasn't a launch of Windows 10. It was a small unveil of a product coming out next year to get enthusiasts and the enterprise involved early to try it out. Clutch at straws much?
