Every company has its ups and downs, and with the downs comes layoffs and people's livelihood falls in jeopardy, and no one wants that. That being said, I remember Steve Jobs saying that "For Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose" is not the way to think about Apple's future. And it took a big man, with a big ego, to show us that the race in the tech business is never won, it's never conquered. And Samsung should take Steve Jobs' advice, and just go and make the best products they can and be proud of them, not copy what other companies have done or mock other companies' products. It shows weakness in their culture. They need to go back to the drawing board, take a look at their talent, and come out with someone brilliant. And if they can't in the way of product, they should be happy with the fact that they make several of the parts that go inside some the best tech products in the world, like Apple's A chips as one example. Be proud of the "Samsung Inside" mantra and learn to make money in other ways. Chasing after Apple's "celebrity" status is never going to work for them, so stop trying to be the "us too" company and just be great at what you do best. The problem with Samsung is they have yet to figure out what that is...

Woah! A 73.9% drop? !  That is insane!

Imagine if Apple were the one to have a 73.9% drop in a quarter! <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Hell, analysts and other clueless people will criticize Apple if they sell 10.9 million iPads instead of 11 million!

As for Samsung, these results are even worse than I would have expected, even though I know that Android is garbage.

Prior to Android... Samsung was using Windows Mobile and their own proprietary OS.

If Android hadn't come along... do you think either of those two other choices would have been a better decision?

And while Samsung isn't an Apple "partner" per se... they do make a lot of money providing hardware components to Apple and others.

It's a big assumption that had they not adopted the afore mentioned POS mobile OS from Google that they would have forged on as boldly after iPhone. They could just as easily thrown in the towel or kept a far lower profile.

My reference to being an Apple 'partner' was a reference to a potential future they missed out on not a reference to any current status.

110%, they owe Apple and MS a lot of money still.

What will that do to the numbers .... as in loss.

While I don't refute that they are still making millions of chips per quarter, I'm pretty sure that TSMC is making the A8 and A8X chips for Apple now so this will be another hit to Scamsome's bottom line.

Oh, I absolutely expect that to affect them, but I don't know how much business the new iPhone would have done for their entire chip line or the profits they would have made from it.

To be clear, I am saying Samsung will still make the older chips for Apple for at least a couple years.

When you have the greatest screen technology on the planet, yet your products are much, much worse than when someone else uses your screens for their products (nec, eizo) and when your business model is to ride the coat-tails of the market leader while pretty much shamelessly copying them (and aggressively attacking the in ads at at same time instead of carving your own way) and when you are piss poor in design, software development and customer support, that's what happens. I have no sympathy for them. They don't deserve any better.

    Samsung is doomed

Let us not get ahead of ourselves.

This is mostly due to the Galaxy S5 being a total bust. It was bashed and trashed even among the most ardent Android and Samsung supporters. I personally do not know anyone who bought a Galaxy S5. It is just that bad. Samsung has already rushed a second iteration, the Galaxy S5 Plus, out in Asia, and they have already begun leaking their plans for the Galaxy S6 (64 bit CPU, Lollipop, iris scanner etc.)

However, their recently released Galaxy Alpha and especially the Galaxy Note 4 were both extremely well received. Early reports are that the Note 4 is selling almost as well as the Note 3, and the Note 3 was a phenomenal success. (And yes, I do personally know people that have bought the Note 4, and more still who plan to.) The Note Edge hasn't been released widely yet, but it is getting fantastic reviews, even from tech reviewers who have bought and are in love with the iPhone 6 Plus.

While Samsung sales are down, the sales of other Android makers are up. And no, it is not just Xiaomi. Several Android makers turned profits this year. Several more will next year. Check out this link:

    http://9to5google.com/2014/10/29/xiaomi-third-largest-smartphone-maker/

While Xiaomi more than tripled their phone sales from Q3 2013 to Q3 2014 (5 million to 18 million), LG and Huawei both sold 4 million more phones than in the quarter last year too. (Huawei bears paying attention to ... they narrowly missed - by mere weeks - being the first company to put a 64 bit Android phone on the market. It is hardware optimized for Lollipop, has a 5.5 inch 720p display, a battery that lasts 3 days on a single charge, 2 GB of RAM and it only costs $215!)

Samsung's dominance was actually bad for Android. Other companies are making better phones (and charging less for them). Technically Samsung has the best Android phone, the Galaxy Note series, but only because of the pen stylus (with supporting software) and yes their outstanding display. But Motorola, LG, HTC, Oppo and Sony all make phones that are much better than the Galaxy S series, and many of them cost half as much. Their software, aesthetics, design, look and feel ... all superior. And now LG is selling pen stylus phablets (a couple of budget models for now but a flagship is in the works) so even that advantage will disappear soon.

So basically where it was possible to pay attention to Apple and Samsung and ignore everybody else (which allowed everyone to focus on Samsung's real shortcomings) now that is over. Case in point: several influential reviewers called the Moto X the best Android phone ever (including the Galaxy Note 4). Forbes went further and called the Moto X the best smartphone of 2014 (which would include in consideration the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus):

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2014/10/10/motorola-moto-x-2014-review-the-years-best-smartphone/

Bottom line: Samsung's getting battered will not necessarily mean a beeline to iPhones. More to the point: Samsung's 3rd quarter decline wasn't ALL due to people abandoning Android for iPhones with bigger screens. Instead, those numbers from Strategy Analytics showed that plenty of Android phones were being sold ... just not by Samsung. And no, it was not just Xiaomi. Xiaomi only accounted for 13 million of the increase in sales. LG, Huawei and "other" (which includes successful phones by HTC, Motorola, Sony and Oppo) made up the bulk of the nearly 60 million increase in Android smartphone sales.

I think you guys may be a bit surprised by what happens to Apple in the future.

The Force is strong with this one.

Do not forget that Apple was a company that expected to lose it's leader many years ago, a leader who thought and acted differently than most, and one who had the opportunity to set about ensuring that the entire company documented and implemented procedures to ensure that it's core values were maintained, regardless of the people that came and went.

There are actually two universities. The external one (iTunes), as used by customers, and the internal one (Apple University) which nobody else has access to. I'm not being philosophical here. This internal educational service really does exist.

    I give them good odds.

And don't be surprised if, in the far future, Apple changes it's name to Weyland Yutani and, in addition to their transportation, housing, food processing, and robot production, gets into atmosphere-harvesting on other planets...

How trite. I'm sure that phones themselves will cease to exist in 100 years, replaced by a technology that would seem like magic today but by then Apple will be at the forefront of this new technology that replaced phones. Or perhaps you meant further into the future when the Sun expands into a red giant and envelopes the Earth in its outer atmosphere.

Samsungs chip division made more profit than its Mobile division. LOL

    Why is this happenning?

Because Apple released the large phones. Checkmate.

All the big phone haters here need to admit the large phones was the smartest thing Apple has done in a while. Samsungs profits are down to 2011 levels aka before the big samsung phone era.

You do realize that Apple's latest results included just nine days of sales of the new iPhones, and Samsung's results are all from before the new iPhones, so your conclusion isn't very logical!

The big iPhones have little to do with Sammy's decline.  It's all about Xiaomi and the other Chinese companies that sell top spec phones at half the price.

You think Sammy copied Apple, lol, just take a look at Xiaomi, even their website is idential to Apple's.

And Apple won't do a damn thing about it, because they're too scared of upsetting the Chinese gov.

Samsung is old news, you guys are beating a dead horse, there's a new gang in town, and it's coming, Borg style.

You know what the real problem for Scamsung here is, don't you?

They kicked the photocopiers one too many times and it started making junk...

    Samsung's Q4 will be worse.

Pre-orders for Apple's new iPhones outstripped existing Samsung Galaxy handsets.

The stores around here have the 16GB models in stock, but all other models are wait-listed.

I might have to wait for the next version if the banks out here don't support Apple Pay this year :)

In all seriousness, Canada has a much established NFC payment system, but nothing but poor excuses for mobile device NFC. ( http://www.rogers.com/suretap/ , Android and Blackberry only, NFC SIM, guess who takes a cut? The mobile carrier.)
