Pardon?  Apple][ mentioned how he doesn't like hybrid devices that combine multiple things.  I found it funny as that's exactly what a smartphone is and we all love those.

He won't like them until Apple releases one themselves, it's the nature of the beast here on AI, hate everything that isn't Apple until it is.

Yeah, but even the bluetooth enabled ones can’t compare to active pens with a corresponding digitiser in the panel. There are issues with precision, pressure sensitivity, latency, and app/OS support. Some of the capacitive-compatible styluses available have done well in terms of the first two of these, but problems remain with latency and app support. If Apple offered a proper active pen solution, this would eliminate these problems and we’d see a lot more iPad-spefic apps that make use of the stylus.

This works for me only if the speakers are correctly placed- left/right when viewing horizontally - like a Kkndle Fire HDX.

Apple faces a number of challenges in delivering on a so-called iPad Pro, according to Ming-Chi Kuo -- a well-connected analyst who has similarly claimed knowledge of the product under development. In addition to executing on the hardware end, he says Apple is also tasked with crafting and secretly evaluating a completely new flavor of iOS designed to take advantage of the device's much larger display real estate.

The first thing to get out of the way is the idea of a dual-mode device. The iPad uses a 4:3 display, Macs use 16:10 or 16:9 so there is no possibility of overlap. 4:3 works best for portrait. You can see the usability issues with a PC being used as a tablet here:

The locations of the ports, folding the keyboard out the way and unusual portrait aspect.

If they make a 12" iPad, I expect it would solely be an iPad and would run on ARM so no OS X software.
If they make a 12" Macbook Air, I expect it would solely be a Macbook Air but passively cooled and running x86 chips. They could add touch to the display as a feature but nobody would use it with a fixed laptop form factor.

To make a 12" iPad worthwhile, they have to solve the problem of productivity. They need to sit someone down with an iPad next to someone with a Macbook and have them do exactly the same tasks and measure where the slowdown comes from and improve it. Get someone to type an entire paper for a university course without the hardware keyboard.

I'm sure people will continue to bend these things for some reason but it being thin and larger dimensions is perfectly ok:

If they did want to make a touch Mac, they might get away with 16:10 aspect but I doubt it and they'd have to change so much of the UI - no menu system, no windows. It's possible but getting software to adapt to it would be a nightmare and it wouldn't behave like iOS. If you do pinch-zoom on Safari with the trackpad, you don't get the smooth text like in iOS.

I'd love a touch Mac but I think the UI has to change so much that it wouldn't be the Mac people recognise. The Finder couldn't exist in the form it's in now. Apple has stated in the past they have no intention to join them.

There is no rule that states that the MacBook has to use a 16:9 ratio. We used 4:3 for years in a laptop without problems but I believe the Surface Pro 3 found that secret aspect ratio where both form factors work very well, 3:2.

I'll believe it when I see it... and when I see it, I'll buy it.

you do know that the original iPad was 1.5 pounds right? i know that much weight might crush an ant, but i think we humans have the fortitude to press on. your post reads that weight is your determining factor to usability and acceptability for a tablet. i have used both surface pro 1 and 2. they were not very good, intuitive, that stylus pissed me off so much but had to be used because you could not touch the tiny buttons, and the orientation switch was delayed horribly. there are many reasons why i did not like it, its weight was not first in line.

I never owned the iPad 1, but I did have the iPad 2 and then the iPad 3. The iPad 1 came out in 2010, and a device from 2014 that weighs more is not a step forward.

Even though some people like to criticize Apple for making their iPads thinner and thinner (with the exception of the iPad 3), I do believe that weight is an important factor in such a device. Of course factors such as display, CPU and performance are also very important, but weight is also important in my view. Every single gram counts in such devices!

Have we? What moron would want OS X on a touchscreen?

Maybe not today's OS X, but things continue to change.  iOS and OS X appear to be on a convergent path, although Apple appears to still remain several years from this.  As the iOS devices become increasingly more powerful, I feel that iOS will become more of a "desktop-class" operating system in terms of capability.  Point is, in a few more iterations, OS X could easily feel pretty natural on a touchscreen device, especially one that you use like an iPad.  I don't really see the trouble with this as a possibility.

So if the iPad Air 3 has infinite quantum memory and processing speed, and can directly read your mind for input, but weights a gram more than the older iPad, it would not be a step forward.  Got it!  Thanks for clearing that up!

That's the same exact model that I got, 128 GB Space Grey WIFI! And yes, it is amazing. It's one of my favorite Apple devices that I have owned so far, and it's even way more powerful than a Macbook that I owned from a few years ago.

    He's right, though.

I had the first iPad. It was amazing, of course, but you did notice the weight. I would say it was acceptable, but you wouldn't want it any heavier. So I think that 1.5 lbs, the weight of the original iPad, is the upper limit that Apple have to stay within for a bigger iPad.

I know of a friend who wishes to buy a 12" inch iPad just to read his magazine subscriptions on it.  But how many people would prefer to consume media on a heavier 12" versus 5.5" plus, 7.9" mini or 9.7" Air?

At the end of the day, it will all depend on softwares and what kind of new uses can be unearthed for new form factor.

    1. Apple will NOT turn the iPad into a laptop.  That is the Mac's job.

    2. Apple LOVES that Microsoft is developing Office 365 for the iPad.  The larger iPad would allow better use off Office 365.  Easier maintenance, less malware/virus, cost savings over the long term.

    3. I asked TIM COOK to develop an iPad Pro with a 14 inch diagonal screen.  Why?  Because this means it can display an 8.5 x 11 page in TRUE-TO-LIFE SIZE.  This allows one to read TEXTBOOKS and MAGAZINES as in real life.  The iPad Air's screen is simply too small.  It is equivalent in size to a paperback book.

    4. If the iPad Pro is light enough, SURE people would prefer to use it over the iPad Air.  I certainly would LOVE IT.  Since most of the weight is battery weight, then a larger screen means the battery can be made thinner and the total weight would still be the same as the iPad Air, particularly if the screen is also more efficient.

Yes, that would be a step backwards. Apple doesn't want to repeat what happened with the iPad 3 again.

In five years time, I can't even imagine how light and thin an iPad will be.

This is the future people. There is no use for caveman thinking anymore.

I have a feeling it even beats my specced out 2008 iMac! That was about 4,000, and I think the iPad is more.

I needed the extra storage. I think the iPad looks classy in grey with black bezels. With my iPhone, I can tether, so don't need the cellular. Makes it fractionally lighter, too.

It’s going to be tough seeing a big one next year...

Indeed, the iPad is around 4500 I believe. Yeah, I wanted the black bezels also, which left me with only one choice. I find black to be less distracting than white.

As for the bigger one, we'll see what happens next year!

I initially thought I was going to get a white one, having had black. I thought it was fresh and clean. But somehow, black works better. I have a dark background to make the icons clearer, so a dark bezel blends in well.

I guess your 13 positives beat my 10 negatives in the final reckoning!

I got a red Smart Cover, too. Had a red one before, and was planning on black, However, the black one is more like dark grey, and the red one is so vivid, I had to get it. Of all the colours in the Apple Store, red seemed the most popular, as there was only one left, whereas there were several of the rest. I was even taken by the yellow one. Would probably get dirty easily, though.
