But the owners of these phones also don't care. They just want cheap because they know they can replace with another cheap phone if they have problems. They see the tech world through entirely different lenses than we do. Cheap junk is "good enough" for them.
They are not vintage phones that are still in use. They are new, but low quality phones.

the problem is that you think having old specs is a bad thing - it isn't. I would be very happy with a phone made in 2011 as long as it's capable of browsing, facebooking, texting, and capturing. Not everyone needs the latest features.

how so? Remember that Samsung in 2013 sold about 2 high end phones for every 3 iPhones sold. But the Android share is like 2 or 3 times the iOS share, which means that for every high end phone Samsung sold, there were several low end crap phones sold.

No, it's not like reporting the Patriots won again because football is only a 4-5 months-out-of-the-year sport. No matter what the facts are it's like beating a dead horse. If this kind of "reporting" doesn't get spread to the same media outlets that publish the Apple bashing, it's basically only for our infotainment and does nothing to correct the Apple bashing that the general public sees. I use the word infotainment because this story isn't quite as educational like a lot of DED's other articles, which I certainly enjoy reading and learning at the same time.
