What a totally disgusting, offensive and anti-American thought process the current Blackberry CEO has. App neutrality?

    Strange, he's American himself.

Apple are total dickheads, iChat rocks but do I use it to communicate with fellow co workers no because they have to work with windows based clients all day and they need cross platform interactivity so we use Skype, on my iPhone do I use iChat to text no because half the people I text are on Android so I use WhatsApp. How can the worlds biggest mobile phone maker not get this, they could own this market if they went cross platform.

    WhatsApp is expanding...to a webbrowser:

    I so want a cross-platform iMessage.

Then ask Apple. If tens of millions want that, they may do if if they feel if would benefit them. But it does work with other Messaging systems, just not with all the features.

Americans have joined Al-Qaeda before. Being an "American" doesn't make somebody immune from having ridiculous, anti-freedom and offensive ideas. Plenty of nutjobs happen to be American.

And Chen's proposal is definitely outrageous, ridiculous and goes against the concept of free-will and self determination. A company should be free to develop for whoever they wish.

No, they wouldn't. Apple would turn into a software company just like Google and Microsoft and all phones would be cheap garbage running Android. Apple sells a complete product, which also happens to be the best phone and software combination going. Try letting those co-workers work instead of trying to chat with them all the time. Also educate them on why Apple phones are better and get them to buy one, then you don't have to use inferior apps on your iPhone (if you even have one) just to talk with your friends and co-workers.

An alternative would be to get new friends who already have iPhones.

Companies should be forced to make their app work across all platforms, even if they don't want to, or even if they'd lose money and waste resources in the process? :err:

    Hell no.

Everybody knows that Blackberry is in deep trouble, due to their own stupidity and arrogance, but that is no excuse for them to peddle these sorts of ideas. If Blackberry's marketshare wasn't 0.0000000000100024 %, then maybe more companies would bother to provide apps for Blackberry.

It's not anti-American. It's not a totally capitalist idea though.

I'd so love for Apple to open up iMessage and FaceTime by releasing those apps on Android. To be able to send iMessages to everyone (Android users would download iMessage) would make my usage of my Apple devices far more seamless and enjoyable. Juggling messaging apps is quite annoying.

I don't know what your problem is. I have no problems using iMessage with my Android using friends. And you can always use Skype.

I see what you mean. I do see the two (America + capitalism) as going hand in hand though.

Don't hyperventilate over this. it's not as serious as you're making it out to be.

I'm not worried about this at all.

His idea is never going to gain traction. If I believed that it would, then I would be worried.

Are you sure you actually use Apple products? You know that iChat was discontinued several years ago.

Apple is not the worlds biggest phone maker. They are not the worlds biggest smartphone maker.

Quite frankly, this looks like a troll post, and I came very close to deleting it.

Mr. Chen, your company, both software as well as hardware, are indeed so 19th century ... If I were you, I would shut down the company and pay off your poor shareholders! BB is in fact the dead horse of this century. Let it go, my man!

    Get better friends.

Apple can't release FaceTime on other platforms because of lawsuits.

Apple released the protocols to the standards association several years ago. It's up to other companies to support them, rather than that of their own software. If they don't want to do that, then people should be blaming them, and not Apple.

Stop whining. You're using other options so iMessage doesn't apply to you anyway.

Own what market, the messaging market with no money to to be made?

I think we can all recognize when something's major, and something's minor. If almost everyone uses something, it's major, if almost no one does, it's minor. There are hundreds of messaging apps out there. Almost none of them are used by more than a tiny fraction of the population. They are all minor. iMessage is used by hundreds of millions of people, so it's major. There are numerous Tv and movie apps that rent the content the way Netflix does, but how many people subscribe to them? Same thing for music stores and streaming music services.

I don't think that anyone would argue whether Skype is a major app or service. But what about "Bob's Movie and Talk Phone" app (not a real product, as far as I know)? We can tell.

Yes, and it has been like that since forever. Email uses a standard protocol but we all have our favorite email app. For my money it should be the same for messaging. It's a win win for users. Having said that, iMessage is pretty good in that I can send and receive text msgs seamlessly with Android or whatever, users. Within Apple data is used and the rest use the old style messages. Works pretty well.

You can use iMessage with Android text messages. I do that all the time.
