A report on Wednesday claims Apple has pushed back plans to start mass production of a 12.9-inch iPad model due to poor display yields, and will move forward with a revised ramp up cycle set to start in September.

    <div align="center"><img src="http://photos2.appleinsidercdn.com/13.11.03-Airs.jpg" alt="iPad Air" class="lazy" data-original="http://photos2.appleinsidercdn.com/13.11.03-Airs.jpg" pagespeed_url_hash="891147316" onload="pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);" style="display: inline;"></div>

According to <em>Bloomberg</em>, sources claim Apple originally planned to kick off production in the first quarter of 2015, but supplies of the larger 12.9-inch panels have <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-04/apple-said-to-delay-larger-ipad-production-on-panel-challenges">forced a delay</a> to September. Assuming the rumored assembly timeline, Apple could be looking at a fourth quarter or early 2016 debut.

Late last year, pundits expected the so-called "iPad Pro" to hit store shelves in the first quarter of 2015. Those guesses were refuted in November by noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said Apple's larger-screened tablet <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/11/12/apples-rumored-129-inch-ipad-pro-pushed-back-to-q2-2015-current-models-to-see-steep-sales-decline">is unlikely</a> to enter mass production until the second quarter of 2015 at the earliest. At the time, Kuo cited a crunch on component production and assembly as catalysts for delay.

    Aside from a <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/04/purported-ipad-pro-render-hints-at-additional-speakers-on-apples-rumored-12-tablet">supposed rendering</a> and a questionable photo of an alleged <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/08/photo-of-supposed-ipad-pro-mold-prompts-questionable-speculation-lacks-answers">production mold</a>, information on Apple's as-yet-unannounced jumbo iPad is scarce.

Rumors suggest that Apple will use the extra chassis space afforded by a larger display to build in <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/11/01/rumor-apples-ipad-pro-to-be-as-thin-as-an-iphone-sport-122-inch-display-extra-speakers-">extra speakers</a> that provide stereo output while viewing content in the landscape orientation.

More recently, Kuo speculated that Apple could launch a <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/18/kgi-apple-likely-to-launch-stylus-to-enhance-upcoming-129-inch-ipad-user-experience">branded stylus</a> to be sold alongside iPad Pro, while a follow-up model might sport advanced 3D writing capabilities.

Today's news lines up with statements made by Apple CEO Tim Cook, who <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/27/apple-ipad-sales-slumped-18-in-q1-but-cook-still-sees-bright-future-for-platform">in January</a> intimated that the iPad lineup may not see significant changes during the first half of 2015. During the company's most recent quarterly investor conference call, Cook was upbeat on the future of iPad, noting his position offers a clear view of Apple's product pipeline.

The Apple chief was careful not to send mixed signals, however, saying, "I'm not projecting. To be clear with everyone, I'm not projecting something very different next quarter or the next. I'm thinking over the long run."

I can't count the number of stories published over the years, that state production is delayed or shipments are constrained, due to some production issues with screens. After all these years you'd think the originators of these stories, that all proved false, would come up with something original.

The only thing worse than these bogus stories, is the number of airheads that believe them.

Haha. Fortunately I had a good enough mother, so I'm not too distressed. But I'll still take a hug. :)

I'm actually still really enjoying my iPad 3, although the iPad Air 2 has been tempting. There's a surprisingly dramatic difference when I play with the latter at the Apple Store.

I don't know about all of you but I would much rather Apple delay release until they have a enough of the larger iPads available rather than too few and get everyone angry because there wasn't enough to even get through the first weekend Maybe you guys like that sort of thing LOL but I don't. Have enough stock for at least the first week to the countries they launch to usually in the first round of a new release. If that's what the "yield" comment is about I'm good with that. Think about how long it would take to build up 20 million enough for the first 12-15 countries. IMHO

    Here's how I read it:

We've been saying this thing would come out. As the time nears, there's just no evidence that it's going into production. The choices are:

    1. We were wrong and it's not coming.

    2. It's delayed 6 months.

Well, we sure hate to admit we were wrong about something, so yeah, #1 it is.

I went from my 3 to the Air 2, and I haven't regretted it one bit.  The 3 is still in the household (family member), and when I occasionally pick it up, it just reinforces how many orders of magnitude better the most recent one is.

Imagine what it was like going from my iPad 2 to the Air 2!

I still use it as a photo frame.

The following has been bugging me for a very long time.

Anyone noticed how utterly trashy and misleading Macrumors' headlines are, especially those stories published by "Juli Clover"? She literally states every rumor as a FACT, each and every time. I know we're talking about an Apple rumor site, but there should be at least some minimum level of journalistic integrity and honesty. Not sure how they get away this that trash. Don't know if she's just that moronic, or just dishonest just for clicks. Every other author makes an attempt to separate fact from rumor in the headlines.

Some of her recent FACT headlines:

MacBook Air Refresh With Broadwell Processors and Intel HD 6000 Graphics Appears Imminent

(based on what appears to be completely fake screenshots)

Apple Delaying Production on Larger-Screened 'iPad Pro' Until September

(not a shred of evidence that anything has beed "delayed")

Samsung to Produce A9 Chips for Apple's Next-Generation Devices

(Still a rumor, especially when it was published)

iOS 9 to Focus Heavily on Stability and Optimization

    (nothing but a rumor)

Hundreds of Apple Employees Working On Apple-Branded Electric Vehicle

    (Unsubstantiated Rumor)

Apple Aiming to Begin Electric Car Production in 2020

    Rumor

Samsung in Talks to Buy BlackBerry for $7.5 Billion

    Trash Rumor

Apple Aiming for 19 Hours of Apple Watch Battery Life With 'Mixed Usage'

    Rumor

Apple Continues War on Notification Center Widgets, Asks 'Drafts' to Remove Note Creation Feature

Not really a rumor, but had to include this for the sheer agenda-driven wording

Apple Deleted iPod Owners' Songs Downloaded From Competing Music Services Between 2007 and 2009

Hilariously misleading and deceptive headline, from the iPod trial (ie. restoring iPod would remove songs copied over in unsupported ways)

iCloud Development Held Up By 'Deep Organizational Issues' at Apple

My uncle's dog's sister's 2nd cousin heard this from a reliable source at Apple

She's horrible, and probably secretly a troll. Seriously, how tough is it to add "allegedly" or "rumored" in any of these headlines? I can't believe such a high traffic site gets away with publishing this trash. I haven't seen anything like this here.

I've always wondered why they have the speakers placed for portrait orientation. How many of us watch videos without rotating to landscape? Nobody? Yeah, that's what I thought :)

Yeah, I would imagine that most people (99%) view films and videos using landscape. Most games are also landscape I'm pretty sure.

As for who might view videos and movies in portrait? Perhaps the same confused and ignorant people who shoot videos on their phone in portrait mode and then post them to youtube, so that you get those two huge black bars on the left and right side, with a tiny video in the middle. It should be a crime to shoot and post video in that format.

Wouldn't it be nice if the new iPad Pro allowed for the Apple TV app? It would be the main personal tv for a lot of folks. We already watch Netflix and Hulu in bed or on the sofa. It would be nice to have all of that nicely in one place.

I don't see the keyboard EVER going away.  It allows you to do actual work that requires more than finger/stylus input - sort of like going beyond Chopsticks on the piano.  Sure there are niche applications for a pure tablet, but the operative word is niche.  For everything else, the problem isn't the tablet form factor per se (a keyboard can be added), but the software perspective.  General computing's heritage is the desktop with its limitless resources, but its functions weren't directly transferable to mobile with the latter's constrained resources.  MS tried and failed with Windows CE and Mobile.  But with hardware power these days, it's "only" a matter of making an environment that can operate comfortably in both mobile and fixed form on the same DATA.  Whoever comes up with a unified DATA MANAGEMENT perspective will take the lead.  iCloud is not currently a data management solution.  I think MS is in a much better strategic position to do this as they already have the massive majority of action on the desktop, where most data management occurs (productivity applications).  I'm not saying they can execute properly, but improving mobile power plays readily into MS's hand, and may put them back in the driver's seat for mobile.  I'm not talking style, I'm talking function.
