I would posit that the 4" phone wouldn't need to be thicker because it wouldn't need as big a battery. The screen wouldn't be as resolution-intensive as the current iPhone 6 and we all know the screen is one of the biggest draws of the battery.
You know what iPhone is not a little toy you can just stuff something inside and call it a product. You put a NFC chip in 4" and call it minor upgrade? NFC chip comes with the board and antenna of its own Implementing it in the existing 4" version? You gotta be kidding me. That needs a full redesign of the chassis, main board, case, antenna and such...also, R&D and device testing resources too. That's why Apple would not go through troubles to sell the device at lower margin. New 4" is dead. Learn to adapt with 4.7".
Your point is completely ridiculous. The Apple Watch has NFC, bluetooth and wifi. If they can add them to the watch, they can add them to a 4 inch iPhone with other updates.

Are you serious? The fucking watch is designed from ground up. You can't just add NFC to existing 4" version without major redesign of the products. Let's stop commenting on this none sense until you understand that Apple watch performance is no where near the phone level with that tiny screen.

No one declared that Apple would not redesign the internals of any new 4 inch iPhone. Of course they would do this because if it is a premium and new phone but simply at a different size, it would require a redesign to add the new processor, better camera, etc. That said adding an NFC chip wouldn't be that big of a deal nor would adding an antenna. They can easily fit it in the 4 inch design. Apple has a clear interest in add NFC because it helps bring more new users to ApplePay which earns Apple fees.

I didn't call it a minor upgrade or say it wouldn't need a redesign. You just read into that so you could make some snarky post. Like I said in my previous post NFC was added to the Apple Watch so it shouldn't require the phone get thicker. It proves they can add NFC in a small chassis. And at $149 on contract it wouldn't be a huge margin reducer because as you assume it wouldn't cannabalize sales of the 4.7" and up. It just gives more options. I got the 6 on launch day. I'm not jumping ship from Apple if they don't make a 4". My 5 still feels better size-wise. I'm just suggesting they bring the size back. Take a chill.
I suppose if you are a vertically challenged person (Midget) there might be a reason for a 4inch phone. But I don't think Apple would sell many imho, certainly not enough to justify the expenses of retooling
I have the 6+ and had the 6. When I use my girlfriends 5s... it just feels right. Lightweight and easy to hold in 1 hand. I think I prefer the smaller phone and think it would be a mistake to kill that market.
I have a 6+ and had the 5. When I use my girlfriends 5c... it just feels so tiny and like toy. Too small and hard to find. I prefer the larger phone and think it would be a mistake to do a small phone again
Of course you are right. Those of us who prefers the smaller non-holding-a-frigging-widescreen-TV-to-your-head-PHONE must be forced to use the holding-a-frigging-widescreen-TV-to-your-head-PHONE. We should have no choice.
You never heard of a Bluetooth headset? There are some really nice ones now.
Oh cool something else to carry around with me and forget to charge. Or should I just wear it in my ear all day? I could masquerade as a salesman. Then I'd be someone. Constant connection.
You're preaching to the choir. I for one do not need, nor want to be connected perpetually.

No way in hell I'm going to walk around with one of those things in my head all day. Wtf. The only people I ever see with those things in are African American men in their fifties and weird old cat ladies in the grocery store. I can't believe anyone makes money selling those things. I guess there're lots of those types out there.

A lot of headphones now incorporate the ability to talk as well as listening to music.
The 6 was too big for me. I sold it to a friend at a loss and downgraded to my much older 5. I like the smaller form factor better. 6 is just too big for my pocket. Now for viewing, the 6 is better I will admit that. For me a smaller, faster phone with all the goodies is best, but not for everyone. I still prefer the Mac for typing. Siri does not speak Southern Monotone very well. So, I guess I will always be laden with a keyboard of sorts.
We won't be seeing a top end 4 inch phone or a round Apple Watch.
Sept new line up will be:
iPhone 6S+ $299
iPhone 6S $199
iPhone 6C - $99 - basically iPhone6 in plastic - 4.7 inch screen
iPhone 5S - $0
What is still in the air is an iPhone Edition.
I could see a solid gold iPhone 6S+ Edition selling for $5k
You will never -ever- see a solid-gold anything. Ignoring the cost of gold, the problem is that gold is soft. Anything (from watches to statues) that is "gold" is really some alloy of gold if it's meant to be "solid" or it's gold electro-plated onto a stronger material.
The "gold" Nokia's from 7 years back were "18K gold-plated" and well over 1000$.
As far as new phones. Apple is far more likely to switch the metal to plastic shells and otherwise keep the device identical, but leave it at 16 or 32GB (I'm having a hard time believing that 16GB is enough anymore after trying to upgrade iOS on my 16GB iPad and having to delete just about everything on it to do so) They only need to discontinue a model once the economics of keeping it no longer make sense. Most people will buy a the latest model, and the "c" models are still that.
A 4" model returning would be welcomed by those of us who don't want these stupidly large phones again. Hello 1985 is calling...

Apple does not make niche products and the 4 inch phone is quickly becoming one.
This isn’t a very good joke, since neither part of it is correct.

Doesn't have the NFC chip unfortunately, so no Apple Pay.
It does have the Watch app on it though. I though It came with iOS 8.2.
I still love mine - works great, although the battery drains a bit quicker than I'd like. I'll probably upgrade to a Plus at the end of the year.
Not entirely true. The 5S (as well as the 5) will support Apple Pay...if you buy an Apple Watch to use with it.
