    I'm Latino and I think this entire "experiment" is simply to avoid giving the media-whores like Sharpton and Jackson an extra 15-minutes of TV-time.

    Well said. Now imagine if there was an organization like Code2040 for only white people. The liberal press would scream bloody murder and call them racists. Programs that help other races are fine, but no way in hell could there be a program that helped underprivileged white people. This country is becoming a big joke. Like you said, we need to take race out of the equation, but that will never happen with the mainstream media we have today.

    These candidates have all been hand selected as qualified applicants. These are young people with no job experience. All they've done so far is proven they are excellent students of computer science. You really don't know who is going to work out best until you hire them, intern them, train them and see how they grow into the position. Best to get them young and mentor them to be what you need. 

     

    Ethnic diversity is a good thing for Apple because they sell product around the world to every ethnicity and having diversity in your workforce is excellent PR. It is also good for all the other employees to be exposed to different cultural ideas.

     

    The best and brightest on paper is not always a guarantee that they will work out well. Look at Papermaster or Forstall. Not everyone needs to be a genius.

    I cannot believe some of the comments here. In case you did not hear Tim Cook is part of a minority, a minority that corporate America still cannot accept fully yet Steve Jobs saw him as the best person to take over Apple. For many reasons which most of you apparently have no understanding of minorities have to be twice as good as someone from the mainstream to get ahead in this country. I assume we are all reasonably intelligent people reading Appleinsider however having an interest in technology does not equate with understanding how hard it is to be different and accepted no matter how good you are at something. None of you have lost anything with the program in place, none of you could work at Apple so I can only assume there is some weird jealousy be spewed.

    Even more funny (if such questions could be regarded as funny, which they are not), is the fact of considering "Latinos" as a race ...

    Well, obviously they can't be as competent as white males, because...hang on, there must be a reason...nope, can't find one.

    Really, the whole "hiring the best person" thing only works if you're sure you're seeing all the potential candidates. At the moment, Apple may be missing people who come from backgrounds that don't have the same access to internship programs, so now they're working with the community to fix that. And anything that increases the number of candidates they see is a good thing for Apple, a good thing for people with backgrounds that don't normally get the opportunity, and, ultimately good for us, because it means that they really are getting the best people.

    But, of course, you can't do anything positive for minorities without pissing off the white males. After all, if they hire some qualified Latino as an intern, it must mean some even better qualified WASP is missing out.

    Racial quotas are not the answer.  Sorry.  This is a 1970s-era solution.  It breeds racial animosity and a correct perception that races are being treated unequally, and therefore have unequal qualifications and skills (which can be a true statement, in a quota-based regime).  Jim Crow "solutions" do not solve the aftershocks of Jim Crow.

     

    Outreach & recruiting are the answer, BUT, you can't use racist quotas for that either.  Not to be a know-it-all, but, Apple should require mentorship of low income students in tech, paying its employees based on the success of that mentorship.  Race should be tracked, but never applied directly in a quota (let alone a litmus test regarding children!).  That's racist.  It creates new victims and is evil.

    Latinos are mostly Native Americans with a few other ethnicities mixed in which by the classic definition would make them Mongoloid. The definition of race gets quite ambiguous around the edges. At this point in time, especially in the US, there are so many ethnicities that we should really stop thinking in terms of races. People just need to be a lot more tolerant of different languages, cultures and physical attributes. We all have 99.99% the same DNA.

    No such thing for white people!. Even though whites are now the minority in California!!!. If whites starred forming these white only groups, it would be racist. Anyone else and it's just fine. Black Panthers, talking about a group of white hating blacks!!! They are the KKK of the blacks but that's ok because they aren't white!!!

    It's this crap that continues to make racism continue. Hire the people that are the best qualified for whatever job. Skin color shouldn't even be a factor.

    Sadly, shortcuts like this have to exist.  I doubt Code2040 works for free.

    Wouldn't it be easier for job applicants to just include their race on their resumé?

    No, race shouldn't be on any resume!. Race shouldn't have any effect!. Hire the best qualified people that applied for the jobs.

    Depends on which Latino group you're talking about. Many from South America, and the islands (PR, Cuba, DR) have clear European roots.
